Dear Friends, We hope your holiday season is off to a great start and wish you all peace and joy in the coming month and in the New Year as always! This newsletter marks Katie’s final edition as editor (Thanks Katie!). Beginning with the next newsletter, David Benfield will take over as editor. David is a native of Durham, NC, and owns/operates Brightside Bamboo (www.brightsidebamboo.com). We want to extend a big thank-you to Dave for his willingness to serve! Along with the transition to a new editor, we will also be transitioning to an all-digital newsletter format. Please continue reading for more information on this transition. I would also like to remind everyone that hasn’t done so already to “like” the SEC and the ABS Facebook pages. Besides staying up-to-date on bamboo events, they are a great way to see and share bamboo links and to network with others in the bamboo world! Finally, I would like to welcome all new members and extend an invitation to our next gathering. The SEC’s annual meeting and grove cleanup will be held in Savannah at the Historic Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Tentative details follow later in this newsletter. We hope to see you there!

Our upcoming annual meeting will feature a tour of BFCG’s new Bamboo Artifacts Museum, which contains over 550 bamboo items recently returned to their Savannah home after a 32-year absence (see following article). We hope to have a representative of BFCG talk a little about the history of the collection and how it finally came home to Georgia. SEC NEWSLETTER GOES DIGITAL!
SEC newsletter distribution will be transitioning to an all-digital format beginning with the next edition. Everyone is encouraged to add the following address to their address book to ensure that future newsletters do not end up in the spam folder: [email protected]. We will also be contacting members who do not have an email address on file with ABS to request one. Anyone with questions about this transition should contact Tracy at [email protected] or 706-255-4901. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we make this transition to conserve resources and streamline newsletter delivery!
BAMBOO ARTIFACT MUSEUM OPENS IN SAVANNAH
More than 550 items -- from yard rakes and flutes to medicine containers and pigeon whistles, all made from bamboo – are now on display at the new Bamboo Artifact Museum at the University of Georgia Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historical Bamboo Farm in Savannah, Ga. From the early 1900s to 1979, scientists collected these items as they travelled the world seeking unusual plants. They donated them to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Bamboo Farm in Savannah. When the USDA station closed in 1979, the artifacts were shipped to Washington and displayed or stored at the Smithsonian and other museums. The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Chatham County now manage the bamboo farm. CAES Dean and Director Scott Angle and the garden’s superintendent Jim Fountain arranged for the
artifacts to return to their original home in Georgia. The bamboo collection is now housed in the museum, and Richmond Hill artist Sarah Volker adorned the walls with a bamboo mural. Read the full story at: www.georgiafaces.caes.uga.edu/?public=viewStory&pk_id=4258):
FOR SALE: SOUTH CAROLINA BAMBOO GARDENS
For sale: Bamboo jungle (established 1988) with 2 (3) bedroom, 1 bath mountain cabin on 1 acre of land near Jones Gap State Park north of Greenville, SC. Spectacular subtropical garden includes 35 bamboo species, 28' high palm trees, 16' high citrus, 10' high Yucca, and many other botanical delights. Many of the bamboos are well above ABS listed sizes with 3 mature Moso groves, Bambusa, Fargesia, Chusquea, tumidissinoda, and others. Property also includes a greenhouse and 4 ponds. The garden's setting is the Jones Gap valley in a zone 8a microclimate where summer temps rarely exceed 90F. Trails behind the property link into the Jones Gap/Table Rock State Park trail network. The house is fairly dumpy looking, but the garden setting is spectacular. You can improve a home's appearance in a matter of weeks by throwing money and a contractor at it, but it takes years to surround it with a mature subtropical landscape. The 2000 chapter meeting was held here and the bamboos have only been getting better ever since. I would prefer to sell it to someone who would appreciate the bamboo rather than sell it to Joe Q. Public who would raze the bamboo to plant Bradfords and a lawn. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a garden of this magnitude, truly a plant nut's delight. Photos are at http://smg.photobucket.com/profile/MikeMariettaSC. Asking price $80,000. If interested, contact Michael Turner at [email protected].
