Music can soothe, motivate, officiate, commiserate and

educate. In this issue we are going to highlight the

musical selection that the library has to offer. Music

lives at the library in many forms, it may be a DVD,

a book, or a CD. Thanks to the generosity of CBC Radio Canada

Sudbury, our CD collection recently increased by 17,000 CD’s! That

amounts to years of listening enjoyment. Join us as we explore just a

small sample of this large collection.

There is a very famous song “Hotel California” written by the Eagles that has been interpreted and deconstructed many ways. Generations of people thought that the song had hidden meanings and was relaying messages. Very recently in a documentary, the songwriter Glen Frey was quoted as saying that there were no hidden meanings in the song, that the song was whatever the listener wanted it to be. In other words the musicians created the music, released it to the world and the receivers then each ascribed a different meaning to the song. The meanings were found through their individual lens and made up the soundtracks of their lives. We have moved a long time away from records and the seventies music scene with the advent of digital music.

Many thought that digital music would be the death of the music industry, instead what has happened is more opportunity to hear music in many places, iPod, iPad, satellite radio, cellphone etc. Because of the ease of access, many people have rediscovered their music collections. GSPL has been blessed with being the donor recipient of CBC Radio/Radio

From an early age we are exposed to music and songs, usually by a friend, parent or sibling, the music is there often without us realizing that it is playing in the background. It is only later when we hear a particular song that it brings right back to a space in time. The personal soundtrack for everyone is usually different because experiences are individual, but what is shared is the music.

Canada’s entire CD Library as a result of this paradigm shift. We now have 17,000 more ways for everyone to rediscover old music, discover new music, and add to the soundtracks of their lives.

Anyone who grew up listening to those vinyl records talks about the interactive experience that came from records. A vinyl record offered the listener an experience. It was a multi-stage process to enjoy music. First you had to go to a record store to purchase the music and then peel off the plastic sheeting and then fire up the stereo. Once the music started the experience did not stop, records came with dust jackets and liner notes. In addition to following along with the music, listeners could read all about their favourite artists and see pictures of the band. For many it was the only way that they could ever visualize the band. Digital CD’s continued a slimmed down version of liner notes to some degree, what was lost to some degree is the interactivity of listening to music.

What still exists, is the way that music interacts with memory and how that can transcend space and time. A middle age adult who hears a particular song can vividly recall being 17 and all the sensations of that era when they hear a song. Music is a unique qualifier, it makes all things equal regardless of status. Race, gender, and socio economic status are all erased when the music starts. It also has the unique ability to enable people to lose themselves in the moment and just experience the song. These zen like qualities offer the music listener an experience like no other. Music lives at the library so, visit any branch of the GSPL and discover our amazing music collection and create a new memory that will become the soundtrack of your life.

This ongoing GSPL discussion series will focus on topical issues of the day and engaging topics.

Panelists:Drew Brennan, Senior Environmental Officer with the Ministry of the Environments (MOE) Sudbury District Office: As an Environmental Officer his duties include inspections of commercial and industrial facility’s and ensuring they are operating in compliance with Ontario environment legislation and regulations, this includes responding to environmental incidents such as spills, public complaints and concerns and public outreach.

Meredith Morris: Sudbury Hyundai, Sudbury: Meredith compliments her Marketing/Business Administration education with more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of the automotive industry. Meredith is the president of C.J. Morris Investments Limited, owner Sudbury Hyundai and Sudbury Used Cars. First elected to OMVIC in 2004 she has served two terms as president and chair. Meredith is past chair of Hyundai Auto Canada, National Dealer Advisory Council, and the Cambrian College Automotive Technology Program. Past involvements include, Sudbury Community Foundation, Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Red Cross. Also past president of the Sudbury Harley Owners Group, “Ladies of Harley” division.

Charles Ramcharan (Laurentian University): Charles Ramcharan is an Associate Professor of Freshwater Biology in Laurentian’s Department of Biology, directors of Laurentian’s new Environmental Science BSc Program and a member of the Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit. Research includes zooplankton in Ontario lakes, oyster populations in Louisiana, and invasive species all over North America. Sudbury research includes recovery of lakes from acidification & metal contamination. Current projects involve urban and climate change effects on lakes. Dr. Ramcharan sits on several environmental management panels including City of Sudbury’s Lake Advisory Panel, Food Policy Council, and Community Garden Network.

Ethical Moderator:Jamie Robertson is the Coordinator of the Ethics Centre at the University of Sudbury. Research areas include environmental policy-making and the ethical foundations of environmental economics with a specialty in Environment Ethics. As Coordinator of the Ethics Centre Robertson, will engage in discussions about ethics and ethical issues and engage the community.

Panel Moderator: Mark H. Simeoni, MMP. RCIP. Manager of Community and Strategic Planning for the City of Greater Sudbury. Mark has a long history working with community groups, including, founding Board member of Rainbow Routes, staff liaison to Heritage Advisory Panel, Sustainable Mobility Advisory Panel, and the Greater Sudbury Lakes Advisory Panel In addition Mark has 25 plus years of experience as a facilitator and urban planner with the the City of Greater Sudbury .

Classic Country

Sitting on a bench in the park, listening to the sounds of children’s laughter in the distance, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face and the gentle breeze flowing through my hair, it brings me back to my childhood when I was creative, free, expressive and inspired by all the beauty around me. Children are spontaneous with joy, laughter, dance and song, and with their energy instill beauty and grace to our surroundings along with hope and blessings to our world. As an adult, flashes of inspiration have taken many forms in my life. Reaching out to be of service, singing with Shania Twain at the Sudbury Arena,

playing the guitar, writing and reading poetry, writing lyrics and music, dancing, teaching yoga, meditation, the study and practice of Reiki and Shamballa, along with the practice of kindness, patience and compassion inspire me to continue my journey of inspiration. All actions of inspiration have a ripple effect in our world. Cause and effect as described in the Law of Attraction speak truth. The Universe gathers every act of kindness and returns it to us in the form of opportunities of inspiration.

Synonyms to describe inspiration are afflatus and inhalation. Poetry, music, meditation, yoga, art, photography.

I was inspired recently to sing a song at an Inspiration Café evening, the lyrics speak of filling one’s heart with desires and spreading our light by speaking simple words that say I love you. How three simple words can bring hope, desires and dreams in a person’s life. As I sang these lyrics, I felt my heart filling with purpose, hope and love. As inspiration filled my heart, ripples of these feelings filled the library and everyone

who heard the notes, the lyrics, and the vibrations of the vocals and guitar were indeed lifted and carried to a place of purpose, hope and love.

As a yoga teacher, I am inspired to nurture the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. Teaching yoga at the YMCA as a volunteer provides me with an opportunity to inspire participants to live a more balanced life. After the practice, participants leave lighter than when they walked in. That is what inspires me to continue teaching yoga. To my surprise,

a participant expressed an interest to become a yoga teacher. What a wonderful feeling to have an exchange of energy where both parties receive the gifts of purpose, fulfillment and INSPIRATION.

By the end of 2012, CBC Radio Canada in Sudbury had digitized their extensive compact disc collection and no longer required the physical CDs. To our delight, they offered their entire 17,000 CD collection to the Greater Sudbury Public Library. In essence, the donation was given to the people of Greater Sudbury with the understanding that the library would be caretakers of the collection but also to make it accessible to the public for their listening pleasure.In late January 2013, library staff spent a morning at the CBC offices carefully packing the collection for transport and storage. Nearly 100 boxes of material were moved to the Main Library on MacKenzie Street, where they are in the process of being added to the library catalogue. Though kept in storage, all items that have been added to the catalogue are available to be borrowed by library patrons.

The collection consists of a wide variety of musical styles. It features everything from local artists’ Christmas CDs to French language disco. We are looking forward to unearthing some musical gems and making them available for public enjoyment.As of July 2013, over 1,600 CDs have been made available from the CBC collection. At our current rate of approximately 320 CDs a month, and working roughly 11 months in a year (to account for holidays and other projects), it should take staff about five years to completely catalogue every CD!The Greater Sudbury Public Library would like to thank CBC Radio Canada for their generosity. With their donation, an extensive CD collection has been made available for library patrons to use and enjoy now, and in the future.

The Greater Sudbury Public Library holds first ever Teen Battle of the BandsThe Greater Sudbury Public Library and Anderson Farm Museum and Heritage Society hosted its first ever Teen Battle of the Bands competition this past summer. The Teen Battle of the Bands was held on August 28, 2013 during Rock the Farm, a concert series at the Anderson Farm Museum in Lively. The Teen Battle of The Bands was for newly formed or pre-existing bands, with members aged 13-19. The Battle of the Bands contestants include: Mark’s of, Exictence, C.D.K. Flare

The judges for the contest included Vic Theriault, of the Bluez Brothers, Clayton Drake and KICX 91.7 FM. The prize for the winning band was recording time at Cosmic Dave’s Guitar Emporium, and the runner-up received an on-site photo shoot. “It’s always refreshing to see young talent, even better, it’s great to see parents and a community supporting and encouraging them.” Pierre Dubuc Acting Children and Teens ProgrammerThe Greater Sudbury Public Library wishes to thank all of the bands that participated and their fans who came out to show their support.
