What’s inside DELL?

One focused vision has made Dell the world’s leading computer systems company. One bold concept: Dell’s customer-focused

direct business model. It is our dedication to our worldwide customer base that drives everything we do. Many people are familiar

with the company’s success in creating leading value for customers and investors. Less well known is the unique environment in

which we operate, forged by the people of Dell since the company’s founding in 1984. An environment where our vision to create a

better world for all – is pursued with energy, purpose and effi ciency. We characterise that environment in a statement of corporate

philosophy called “The Soul of Dell”.

The Soul of Dell is a declaration of Dell’s basic values and beliefs worldwide. It defi nes the kind of company we are and aspire to

become; and serves as a guide for our actions around the world. It is Dell’s global commitment to participate responsibly in the global

marketplace; to understand and respect all laws, values and cultures; and to contribute positively in every culture and community in

which we serve, both personally and organisationally.

Ultimately, The Soul of Dell is the basis of our “winning culture” – through improving social conditions, we improve business

conditions. We believe that our unique, one-to-one relationships help customers, employees and communities worldwide learn

about, give to and connect with each other.

Dell’s ability to operate a multicultural workforce in a multicultural marketplace keeps us brimming with innovative ideas, excellent

customer experiences and a direct commitment to you, South Africa.

What’s inside DELL SOUTH AFRICA?

Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and our Commitment to Global Citizenship

Dell’s BEE focus is about sustainable development and economic transformation in South Africa. Our bias is toward long term

commitments to projects and initiatives that deliver real value and real benefi ts.

In recognising BEE as broad-based, our strategies are multi-pronged in contributing to skills and economic development of

historically disadvantaged individuals and businesses. To date, our transformation progression has been remarkable in our

marketplace and inside Dell. To ensure sustainable value and a team approach to BEE, we have established an empowerment

forum within the company, who continuously develop our BEE strategies; carefully investigate initiatives; and weigh up and

report on results. This with the same clear and consistent focus that has driven Dell’s success: To directly meet and exceed the

requirements of our marketplace.

“It is evident that Dell’s worldwide

Our Commitment to Direct Relationships

Direct Relationships: We believe in being direct in all we do

Dell South Africa, operating on the principal of one-to-one relationships, holds this philosophy true in our direct involvement with BEE. Dell, as a multinational, has found innovative and meaningful ways to participate in BEE in South Africa.

At the forefront of our strategies is an effective commitment to transformation in all other aspects of empowerment. Not being once-off investments, we are able to successfully move these initiatives forward in coherent, tangible and long-term sustainability. These include (as elaborated on further in this booklet):

• HDI training and employment equity; • Preferential procurement; • Helping black entrepreneurs build businesses; • Working in partnership with black-owned fi rms, and • Corporate social investment.

Employment Equity, Skills and Human Resources Development and our Commitment to the Dell Team

The Dell Team: We believe our continued success lies in teamwork and the opportunity each team member has to learn, develop and grow.

• Employment Equity

Diversity exists all around us at Dell. And inside Dell is where the foundation for our BEE ethos is most solidly laid. Leveraging this diversity through equal opportunity and fair treatment enables all employees to perform at their best. In turn, this helps us better serve our customers. By actively infl uencing thinking and behaviours, and eradicating covert or overt discrimination, we have created a barrier-free workplace with equitable representation in all employment categories. Dell has exceeded employment equity targets into 2005 on all levels.

• Skills and Human Resources Development

Dell understands when investing in the present and future workforce; development is not only a tool for success but also a tool for life. Our Human Resources Investment programmes are structured to identify, harness and boost Affi rmative Action candidates beyond their talent areas. Our skills development programmes are aligned with the NQF:

The Dell Academy: For those entering the workplace, the programme offers the opportunity to obtain at least one year’s work experience within an IT environment – learning business skills, computer skills and life skills. The 10+ persons employed per annum, are free and assisted in pursuing employment outside the company after their tenure. As from 2004, full learnerships will be provided to graduates and non-graduates.

Dell’s Black Executive Trainee Programme actively accelerates future economic powers into management positions. This with the aim of fulfi lling a more balanced racial composition – in all South Africa’s enterprise managed companies – as soon as possible.

Dell South Africa motivates employees to win with integrity in the global marketplace.

“ Thank you for taking a chance on me! Be blessed – Empowered to Succeed and Prosper.”

Dell | Proudly Empowered“Thank you Dell for offering me an opportunity to experience work-in-the-fast-lane. I have been pretty busy before – but never to this degree! And in the same light, learn and understand the dynamics of the IT industry. Dell is a defi nite PLUS for me, for my life, and for my career.

Thank you for taking a chance on me! Be blessed – Empowered to Succeed and Prosper.”

Preferential Procurement and our Commitment to our Customers

Customers: We believe in creating loyal customers by providing a superior experience at a

great value.

It’s our close relationships with innovative suppliers that help us to deliver one of the best customer experiences in the industry

and to maximise innovation, growth and competitiveness. To help meet our customers’ needs in South Africa, we have an

excellent supplier-base of historically disadvantaged groups that deliver fast, easy and cost-effi cient goods and services. Suppliers

who are not yet BEE approved are actively encouraged to do so within a time frame.

Dell South Africa salutes our suppliers for their commitment to building business partnerships that positively

impact our country.

“ We have no other option but to succeed... thank you Dell!”

“Your holistic support for our business has given

us a new hope; a new direction; a vibrant working

environment; and above all a renewed confi dence that,

with your future involvement, we have no other option

but to succeed! You’ve become our parent company…

thank you Dell!”

Enterprise Development and our Commitment to our Marketplace

Global Citizenship: We believe in participating responsibly in the global marketplace.

Enterprise Development holds the promise of the most sustainable rewards for our marketplace. Dell has targeted building the

capacity of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME’s) with and within the IT industry in South Africa. We have a keen focus

on BEE SMME’s who partner with Dell on market opportunities.

In 2004, Enterprise Development will be our most aggressively funded project in which we will dedicate 50% of all BEE allocated

funds. If, through skills development, training and fi nancial assistance we can help these companies generate income – they will

grow and bear the fruit of success.

Corporate Social Investment and our Commitment to Win!

Winning: We have a passion for winning in everything we do.

Dell’s future success is intertwined with the future success of the communities in which we do business. We rely on our

communities for more than just customers; they are the home of our employees and their families and will be the source of new

employees for many years to come. The Dell Foundation was established to implement Corporate Social Investment strategies in

our community. The key that unlocks this potential is sustainable development in our contribution to:

Healthy Communities and Community Development: Our initiatives aim to meet the basic needs of people and healthcare,

with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS. Dell employees are also involved in the local community and personally undertake volunteer

projects during Dell Worldwide Community Week. In 2002, at Okansie Township, we built a house, brick by brick! And in 2003, a

classroom at Diepsloot Combined School.

Literate and Connected Communities: As the world continues its transition from an industrial economy to a digital economy,

technology access and training are becoming critical tools in the pursuit of social equity. The Dell Foundation brings technology

into areas with limited access (computers for schools etc.) and assist with youth education.

Dell will continue to build technologies – that build communities.
