Page 1: The Soo Chimes · are over for the summer and will resume on Wednesday, September 4th. During this time of rest, summer choir meets every Sunday morning to rehearse at 9:15 a.m.,

In Genesis 1:26-28 we are told,

“Then God said, "Let us make man in

our image, in our likeness, and let them

rule over the fish of the sea and the birds

of the air, over the livestock, over all the

earth, and over all the creatures that

move along the ground." {27} So God

created man in his own image, in the

image of God he created him; male and

female he created them. {28} God

blessed them and said to them, "Be

fruitful and increase in number; fill the

earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of

the sea and the birds of the air and over

every living creature that moves on the

ground."

God created humanity in his

image, male and female and gave them

dominion over the earth. This certainly

has come to pass. We have filled the

earth, 7.53 billion people and subdued it

with human civilization just about

everywhere on the globe. In the month of

July we celebrate the blessings God has

given us as a nation. In all the countries

and people’s of the world, we remember

the gift we have been given to live in this

country. Our country was unique in its

founding and how the desire for freedom

played such a central role in the creation

of our government.

God believes in freedoms and

liberties for his children. In the beginning

God created us with the ability to choose.

God created us for the very purpose of

choosing. We were created to exercise

our free will so God could relate to what

was other (us). When our choosing took

a rather dark turn, expressing itself in

harm inflicted on God and others, God

did not hesitate or wavier about our

freedom. In this month we think about a

country being formed around freedom.

As I think about all the wonderful and

amazing things and sacrifices to found a

country based on freedom, I can’t help

but think of all the wonderful and

amazing things God has done to secure

our free will.

When things went wrong with

our free will, it amazes me God did not

Cabin News

The weather is finally beginning to be a little

warmer and it is a good time to enjoy the

beautiful waters of the area. The Churchs’

retreat cabin on Sugar Island is now open and

provides a beautiful spot for our church members to relax, medi-

tate, and commune with God. The large screened in porch is

perfect for reading, board games, and sunset dinners.

There is a usage fee of $35 for an overnight, or it can be used for

the day only, at a lesser usage fee (perfect for meetings). If

interested, contact Denise at the church office for details and

directions.

July 14th

Office will be

closed on Fridays

through

August 30th.

See you in

the fall!

The Deacons greatly appreciate the support of our congregation and friends for participating in this summer's Simply Give campaign at Meijer. We are looking forward to finding out what we will be receiving in food cards for our pantry from the combined efforts of the local campaign and the Meijer LPGA Classic to be held at the Blythefield Country Club in mid-July. We'd also like to thank the Holy Family Church of Barbeau for the donation of food supplies from their own pantry that were part of local Backpack Programs.

Whether it has been your donations of money, food, or time, all these resources allow us to continue our mission to feed Jesus' sheep. We are truly grateful.

With blessings and a big thank you,

the Deacons

The importance of the 4th of July is that it marks the birth of the United States of America. It was in Philadelphia, and the signers of that document composed by Thomas Jefferson, knew that the Declaration of Independence from dictatorial rule of Great Britain might also be – literally their death sentence.

John Adams, himself a signer of the Declaration, thought that Americans should henceforth cele-brate “a great anniversary festival.” In a letter to his wife Abigail he wrote, “It ought to be

commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.

Surely this is a time for all of us who really cherish that original dream, the one for which so many have died, to individually and collectively re-declare our independence from tyranny, despotism, taxation, without representation, and debts that no free society should ever bear.

We are determined to live free, under God our creator.

simply start over. Think about it, it would have

been a trivial matter for God to have folded

creation up and started over either with the part of

creation we represented or the whole of creation.

Much in the way a potter at the wheel just

re-purposes clay when what is formed does not

work out, God could have started over. The fact

that God didn’t, that God got personally involved

and suffered to redeem our free will.... WOW. It

just tells us so much about the God we worship and

how much God loves us.

Please take time this month to enjoy the

blessings we have been given as citizens of this

country. Also take time to remember what our God

has done to preserve our free will, not just in this

world, but for all eternity.

Peace in Christ,

Mark
