This time of year when the weather warms and collars loosen, and there are shorts and t-shirts everywhere, when children shriek on skim boards, and parents sit and talk, and the sun hangs languid on the horizon preparing a magical display for the evening, we become especially aware of the incredible beauty of our surroundings and realize what a privilege it is to be here - right here. This place knits people back together. Our pace gets changed. It happens when we walk down the beach, just walking and noticing, and the rhythm of the ocean becomes our own rhythm. We slow a bit, then a little more. We soften. We recover. We become chil-dren again. What fun it was to pack the car, the ‘50 Dodge and later ‘56 Chevy, for our annual week at the beach. We would leave Roland Street in Henderson before the sun came up, too excited to breathe. There was never enough money for a fine place close to the water, and it didn’t matter. We were at the beach, all of us: four children in the back seat, two parents up front. I knew that a sunburn was in store for me. I had blazing red hair and fair skin. Even though mother would smother me in sun screen, Coppertone, it was nev-er enough. I would peel forever. That rarely happens now. Products to prevent sunburn are much more effective. But that red-headed kid is always welcome, and the beach always brings him out. It brings back his whole family. Three of the six people in that ‘50 Dodge are with God now. At the beach all return. A lot of us in the St. Francis family live at the beach, and a lot of us are inland. If you’re in the inland group, I hope that you are making plans for a summertime visit to the beach. Come see us! Sit in the round, walk the labyrinth, visit our gallery, attend a con-cert, buy a cookbook, worship with us. I hope that during your stay you will find new energy and light. I hope you will feel con-nected again to your whole family, that you will be spiritually strengthened by those who have gone before you. I hope that as you walk the beach you will become gentler with yourself and softer. I hope you will see many pelicans and dolphins, herons and sandpi-pers. I hope you will enjoy great dining and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. I hope that you are aware that all of this- the island and ocean, birds and sea creatures, the food, the wind and you yourself -are gifts of God. If this works, and you are awash in the grace, the sacrament, of this present moment, you are standing on holy ground … and riding on the back seat of a ‘50 Dodge.
Much love, Everett +

Want to Pray for You by Barbara McCreary
We are definitely a very busy congregation with wonderful
things happening in all areas of our church community. I
just want to take a chance to update all you on some of
these exciting happenings.
Personnel: We have hired a new Parish Administrator –
Jeanette Jenkins. Jeanette is busy learning the many com-
ponents of the position. Please stop by the office and intro-
duce yourself to her. She would love to put a face with
names. David Shapiro, our Sexton, has informed us that he
will be retiring at the end of the year. We will start a search
for a new Sexton later this year.
Security: The Vestry met with Police Chief of Indian
Beach, Chief Sutzko, who provided active shooter training.
The Vestry has formed a Security and Emergency Prepar-
edness Committee to address the entire area of safety for
St. Francis. George Hirasawa, Stover Morris, and Terry
Smith are on the committee. If anyone is interested in be-
ing a part of this committee, we would love to have you
join us.
Church Directory: The church directory has been up-
dated. If you find any errors or updates that need to be
made, please let Jeanette know.
Youth of SFBTS: We are very fortunate that Marian
Goetzinger has returned as our Youth Director. The youth
have been active attending the Acolyte Festival, doing a
yard sale, assisting at the Senior Center serving dinner,
they have prepared a Coffee Hour, and participating in
Youth Sunday each month.
Property: We are seeking estimates to repair the leaky
windows in the church. We are also looking at painting the
church and replacing the doors. The new columbarium is
almost completed. We will be painting Fellowship Hall on
June 4th through the 8th.
Help needed: We need Communication and Social Media
committee members. We have wonderful events happen-
ing at SFBTS but we need to get the word out to the public.
If you are interested in helping to share our activities,
please let any Vestry member know.
If at any time you have concerns about happenings at SFBTS, please contact me.

Grace Notes
by Music Director, Linda Laughton
Greetings from on board Wild Goose,
approximately mid-mini-sabbatical (at
the time of publication of this brief arti-
cle) and somewhere in the lower Chesa-
peake Bay! Mark and I are enjoying the
sailing adventure; each day brings a new
and different experience based entirely
on the weather. I write this on day nine of our travels and
already we have experienced weather extremes; foul
weather gear on the worst day to swimsuits on the best,
weather on the bay can be quite unpredictable, but we
planned well and are prepared!
I'm compiling a list of wildlife sightings which I
will ultimately post on my FaceBook page. I am happy to
say it is growing impressively. We are also taking pic-
tures that we will share in increments along the voyage
as opportunity and connectivity allows. I'm reading some
good books borrowed from my friend, Lynn Brugnolotti.
Thanks, Lynn! We are eating clean and green and getting
large doses of sunshine and fresh air. We've experienced
breathtaking moments of stillness at anchor, where all
we hear is the movement of the water and the birdsong.
We've met up with old friends and made some new
friends along the way.
Thank you to my loving family of St. Francis by
the Sea for giving me this time away to do some sailing
with Mark and to have a break from the music. I appreci-
ate Craig Everett and the many volunteers who are pitch-
ing-in to keep the ministry of music rolling along. It is a
joy to realize a sailing dream we've had for a long while
and to find it to be even better than we imagined. I miss
my church family! I hope that you will all enjoy the June
1 concert, Ambrosia Soloisti. I'll be back on June 17th. Stay Tuned! Linda
The St Francis Community has always been a home for the Arts. In keeping with that tradition, there are two exciting upcoming music series featuring local and World-class talent that we invite you to put on your calendar for the Summer of 2018 and First Quarter of 2019. The first series, “Songs on the Labyrinth” will be held on the following dates with the respective performers and performance times listed: Wed Jun 20 Charlie McCurry & Friends 7:00-8:30pm Wed Jul 18 Kate Campbell 7:00-8:30 pm Thu Aug 16 Spook Handy 7:00-8:30 pm “Songs on the Labyrinth” will be performed on the Labyrinth on the East side of the St. Francis campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring their families, beach chairs, beach blankets, and coolers to listen and sing live music under the Bogue Banks stars. In the event of rain, the “Songs on the Labyrinth” will be moved inside. The now locally famous Captains Kitchen food truck will be on site selling his shrimp burgers and other seafood goodies. The St. Clare Coffeehouse will be held on the following dates with the respective performers and performance times listed: Thu Jan 17, 2019 TBD 6:00-7:00 Thu Feb 14, 2019 Sam Gleaves 6:00-7:00 Thu Mar 14, 2019 Becky Warren 6:00-7:00 The St. Clare Coffeehouse will be performed in the St. Clare Chapel space on the West side of the church. Sweet Beans Coffee & Cafe will be on site selling coffee and hot chocolate. As the Mission of these two series is to “Promote Community Through Music” admission to all of these concerts is FREE. We will however pass the hat for donations for our performers and our performers will be selling their CDs and other merchandise. We are excited to share with you that we have entered into an agreement to partner with The Down East Folk Arts Society in order to provide our community with World-class talent year-in and year-out going forward. We hope to see you at all of these events and encourage you to invite all your friends too!
Should you have any questions about “Songs on the Labyrinth” or “St. Clare Coffeehouse” feel free to contact Charlie McCurry at [email protected]

Dear ECW Ladies,
We usually have an ECW meeting in June to
plan the remainder of the year. May has flown by. I have
scheduled a Build-A-Salad Dinner and Meeting for
Tuesday June 12th at 5:30 PM in the Parish Hall. I will
furnish the greens. There will be a sign-up sheet at the
Office Window to sign up for other salad items you care
to bring. It can be dressing, tomatoes, cucumbers, ol-
ives, cheeses, bread and desserts. Be as creative as you
like. Bring your own adult beverage. Water and tea will
be furnished.
There are several items I would like you to be
thinking about in advance. Now that our books are here,
I would like us to think about other creative ways to
market our books other than the traditional bookstore
way. Yes, we definitely need that, but I am thinking of
people you may personally know who have a shop that
isn’t a bookstore, but who would be willing to either buy
six books at $108 (or 12 $216) and selling them at $30.
Or, perhaps they would take them on consignment and
receive 20% of each sale which would be $6 and they
would send us a payment of $24 per book at the end of
a month.
Please look at your calendars and come pre-
pared to sign-up for our Evensong which will be close to
September 23. That is a Sunday and folks may have
been out of town for the weekend. I am thinking that
Monday the 24th may be better. There is a full moon
that night. I will need a chairman and helpers. We will
need to have tablecloths, plates, napkins, tableware,
cups, ice, tea and whatever else you may want. Again,
bring your own adult beverages along with your pot luck
offering for dinner.
Does anyone have anything you want to add to
the agenda?
Bobbie
Here we go again. It’s time to start planning for this year’s
party. Our 2018 LobsterFest will be held Saturday October
13. Meg Bradford, Geraline Castle, Linda Davies, and I are
already making plans. Your suggestions are always wel-
come and you are encouraged to drop me an email at
[email protected]. I’ll make sure your suggestions
are routed to the appropriate team leader. We’re not quite
ready for volunteer sign-up but I will ask you to consider
the following: We really need people to commit to clean-
up at day’s end. Last year was a challenge and the ball was
carried by a couple of volunteers and people that had been
working hard all day. With the departure of the Makucks
(we do miss them) we have a need for someone to manage
press coverage. Phyllis did a great job with this and I have
her notes. This person will help with the placement of pro-
motional articles in our local and community papers, pub-
lic radio, radio interviews and other available news outlets.
I’d love to combine this with social media management as
well. Keep watching the Newsletter. Thank you in ad-
vance for all you will do to make 2018.

For the Kids of
St. Francis by
Marian Goetzinger,
Director of Youth Ministry
Working with the youth program at St. Francis has many and varied benefits. It is a constant thrill to discover all the ways our young people are involved in the community and pure joy to observe them “doing their thing”. Recently I had the privilege of attending the Morehead City Middle School Band Spring Concert at the West Carteret High School Auditorium. The young musicians were amazing! Especially thrilling for me was that seven of them are Kids of St. Francis. Jason Barclift, Director of Bands, commands the respect and the best of these children. The music presented by both the 7th grade and the 8th grade bands was incredible! I was entertained and mesmerized by the presentation. I could not believe the wonderful sounds coming from those instruments and those kids. Not being a musician, I had not realized what detailed teamwork is involved in creating a choir or a band. The seventh grade band includes Nikolas Mason on Oboe, Jaxon Whitaker on Bassoon, Sofia Mason on Clarinet and Tanner Hahn on Tuba. The eighth grade band includes Grant Richardson on Trumpet and Sasha Kane and Jack Woodard on Trombone. Tanner Hahn, Jaxon Whitaker and Jack Woodard made All-District band and Carteret County Honors Band. I am so very proud of these young people. If you ever have an opportunity to attend one of their concerts, I hope you will. You will definitely be blessed. On Saturday, June 16, 2018 all youth, parents and supporters are encouraged to join me at 9:00 a.m. in the youth center for clean up day. Between now and then, if you have stored anything in the Youth Center or the kids closet, please remove it. We plan a massive purge and organize event. If you do not have permission to use some of our space, if we don’t plan to use it in the next 12 months; if we don’t know what it is or if it’s in our way, it’s gone! Thank you for your support and understanding. I am convinced that we do not need more storage space in and around our building; we simply need to purge and organize. June 17, is both Trinity Center Day and Youth Sunday. If you have things planned around Trinity Center Day, please contact me so we can coordinate. In August, Youth Sunday will be on August 26, which is the 4th Sunday of the month, due to the music conference on August 19. Recently, the seller of a condo donated leftover items to the Kids of St. Francis. We were able to add them to a tag sale that was already in progress and made $120 to add to our designated gift fund. Don’t forget, if you have items to donate, check with Teresa Wilson at Seahorse Cove Consignment Shop to see if she can sell them. 252-222-0342. Make sure to tell her they go on the Kids of St. Francis account. When they sell, she will add
them to our account and send a quarterly check with our portion. It’s a great way to purge and organize at your house and support the youth program at the same time. As always, thank you for caring about children and for all you do to support the Kids of St. Francis.
United Thank Offering (UTO)
Each summer we raise funds for the United Thank Offering (UTO). UTO supports ministries throughout the Episcopal Church and in provinces of the Angli-can Communion in the developing world. To contrib-ute, please pick up an envelope or blue box at the back of the sanctuary or place a check noted for UTO in the collection basket. Our change changes lives!
Thank You!

FAMILY PROMISE OF CARTERET
COUNTY
We continue our collection for Family Promise in Morehead City (men’s and women’s personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, napkins, toiletries, twin size bedding, and diapers). Additionally, if you’d like to volunteer to help out in their office, they are in need of volunteers to answer phones, help people fill out forms, take donations, sort donations, craft or read to children. As little as an hour a week would be a tre-mendous help!

TRINITY CENTER
CAMPERS On Sunday, June 17 we will celebrate Camp Trinity at St Francis. Please bring your donations for Camp Trinity to church by that date. We are hoping to sponsor four un-derprivileged children for
camp which will require monetary donations. If you wish to help sponsor a child, please make a check out to St Francis with a note that it is for Camp Trin-ity and either place it in the collection plate or drop it by the church office. Another way you can help is by providing new, inexpensive shoes/flip flops/water shoes and beach towels. We would like for all campers to have the optimal camping experience. It is important that summer campers, at least for that one week, are on equal footing. Cash donations can be placed in the collection plate in a marked enve-lope showing that the money should go to the Trinity Center Campers or by a check made out to St. Francis with a note that it is for the Trinity Cen-ter Campers. Please give generously. On Camp Trin-ity Sunday, June 17, we will talk about Camp Trinity and how much it means for the children, we will sing Christian camp songs, enjoy camp-themed foods during coffee hour, AND are encouraged to dress in summer camp attire (although please, no bathing suits).
HOPE MISSION Please place any non-perishable food items in the tub
under the table in the parish hall. All items are deliv-
ered to Hope Mission at the end of each month.

A big thank you to Terry and Robin Smith for heading up this project. Also, thank you to all who came out to help cook, to serve, clean up, or donate a dessert. If you missed this wonderful opportunity, there will be another opportunity on Saturday, September 1.
