What is the Solar System? The solar system is the sun together with all planets and other bodies that
revolve around it.
Planets that make up the Solar System
Here are the planets that make up the Solar System in order from the sun.
1. Mercury2. Venus3. Earth4. Mars5. Jupiter6. Saturn7. Uranus8. Neptune
Inner Planets within the Solar System
Inner planets within the solar system are smaller planets and made up of rock and metal. These planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
MERCURYMercury is the first and closet to the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System
VENUSVenus is the 2nd planet from the sun close to the size of earth, but much dryer
and denser.
EARTHEarth is the third planet from the sun. It is the largest of the inner planets and the only
planet where life is known to exist.
MARSMars is the 4th planet from the sun. It is smaller than Earth and Venus’ atmosphere and is
made mostly of carbon dioxide.
Quick-Quiz!!!!Now it is time for you to answer some questions about what you
have learned so far.
Define solar system….The solar system is the sun together with all planets and other bodies that revolve around it.
How many planets are in the solar system? 8
Try to name those planets in order from the sun?Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are the characteristics of inner planets?Inner planets within the solar system are smaller planets and made up of rock and metal.
Name the inner planets of the solar system. These planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
If you answered correctly good Job. If not, go back and review the information again.
Outer Planets within the Solar System
• Outer planets within the solar system are bigger planets. Jupiter and Saturn are called gas giants because they are composed of hydrogen and helium. Neptune and Uranus are called iced giants because they are composed of ices, including water, ammonia, and methane.
JUPITERJupiter is the 5th planet from the sun. It has 2.5 times the mass of all other planets
together.
SATURNSaturn is the 6th planet from the sun. Saturn has a ring system and is the least dense
planet in the solar system.
URANUSUranus is the 7th planet from the sun. It is the lightest of the outer planets and the only
planet that orbits the sun on its side.
NEPTUNENeptune is the 8th planet from the sun. Neptune is smaller, but more dense than Uranus.
Quick-Quiz!!!!Now it is time for you to answer some questions about what you
have learned!!!
