Fourth graders went totally batty over bats! We’ve had quite a learning journey as we researched different species of bats on the Internet and prepared bat reports. geographic regions of Arkansas. We’ve been learning about the oceans, continents and North America. It was time for us to learn about our state!

There are two November birthdays to celebrate. Sandra Chappel has a birthday on November 20, followed by Zachary Mayville on November 23.Mrs. Powell

This year has gotten off to a great start. We have nineteen students in our class. We be-gan our year with stories about ourselves called “All About Me.” This activity allowed us to get to know one another. We have been work-ing very hard on solving word problems and learning the problem solving strategies in math. Everyone seems to love science, especially the hands-on labs. Our first hands-on experiment was observing earthworms and seeing how they responded to stimuli. By the time the experiment was finished, even the most squea-mish students had touched the earthworms. We have also been discovering the fascinating subject of social studies. This is these kids first time to experience the actual subject of social studies. We have studied maps, longitude and latitude, and landforms. We have also been focusing on developing a “can-do” attitude, especially in math. With a can-do attitude and the willingness to try, anything is possible.

In October, the fourth grade began to go batty. We began studying a unit on bats. It has been a lot of fun learning the facts and truths about bats. The students researched and wrote reports about several kinds of bats. The kids made bats using their handprints and we had a special presentation by Kendra Harris from Lake Charles State Park. We also wrote a nar-rative story about the bats that were made from the handprints. We now know that bats are a very important part of our ecosystem and are very helpful to humans.

We are looking forward to the rest of the school year and all of the wonderful activities to come.
