On this day the union will celebrate the efforts and dedication of these members. Retirees and Long Service members will receive

invitation letters from the Union in early April. Once Long Service members and Retirees advise of their attendance, two complimentary tickets will be sent out. Other members and guests are free to purchase tickets to the event by phoning Evelyn at the Union Office at 966-7015. (35.00 per ticket)

The Norm Quan Bursary Recipients for 2017

Left to Right: Alex Wojcichowsky, CUPE 1975 member (Library/Grounds/PAC), Colleen Sopatyk member out of the Dept. of Pediatrics with daughter Brittany, Recipient Sarah Drimmie and her mother Colleen Drimmie who works as a Technician in Council of Hlth Sc. Dean’s Office, Blair Chomyshen, Chair of the Norm Quan Bursary Committee and Bob Jones, Mechanic FMD with daughter Melissa Jones.

Applicants for the Norm Quan Bursary must meet the following criteria. They must be registered full-time in a recognized Canadian post-secondary educational institution and be a member in good standing for at least two years in CUPE 1975 (University of Saskatchewan), OR have a parent, legal guardian or spouse with at least two years continuous membership in CUPE 1975.

For the past 30 years participants were chosen by an off campus panel of judges from the Saskatoon District Labour Council. Applicants woud write a 1500 word essay on union topics.

In 2017 the Bursary Committee made a change to the criteria for

the Bursary. Applicants now have to prove how well rounded they are and what contributions they have made to the community they live in; specifically their volunteer work.

References play a role and marks are only used to break a tie if the applicants both have the same ranking.

The judges who are picked from the Saskatoon District Labour Council’s Education Committee look for applicants who have extensive voluntarism in the community, for their involvement in various projects in their towns, cities or educational institutions.

The students chosen in 2017 are full time students, work many hours

a week to pay for their education, participate in other activities such as sports, choral, music, etc. and still find time to volunteer an enormous amount of their time to various organizations.

The young people chosen put in hours of volunteer time to make their communities a better place to live in.

This is what the judges looked for in awarding the 2017 bursaries and the format will continue in 2018. Application forms are now available on CUPE 1975’s website at www.cupe1975.ca

SFL - OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CONFERENCE

In September 2017 I attended an Occupational Health & Safety Conference put on by the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour. I attended the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) workshop with presenters Colin Byas and Walter Eberle.

We received a lot of information about the WCB regarding history, relationships, principles, eligibility, and benefits. It was all very informative but the one thing I found most interesting was learning that there is The Office of the Worker’s Advocate (OWA). The OWA provides free and independent services to injured workers and their families when dealing with the WCB.

Anyone who has ever been injured on the job and has had their claim denied will appreciate their help going through the appeal process. For more information on the OWA, you can go to their website:http://www.saskatchewan.ca/business/safety-in-the-workplace/assistance-for-wcb-claims-and-appeals.

If you are injured at work:. see a health care professional immediately if you need medical care. report your injury immediately to your supervisor. report your injury to the WCB

More information can be found on the WCB website: http://www.wcbsask.com/

All handouts that I received at the conference will be housed at the CUPE office in McLean Hall and available to anyone who would like to see them.
