The Skin Cancer MDT

The Skin Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)When you have a diagnosis of skin cancer, your case will be discussed at the hospital’s Skin Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting. The Team usually meets 2 to 3 times a month to discuss all new skin cancer patients in the hospital, and the continuing care of others.

What is a Multi-Disciplinary Team? The diagnosis and treatment of cancer requires a team of experts with different skills and training. The team is called a Multi-Disciplinary Team (or MDT for short) and includes professionals who are specialists in cancer diagnosis and treatment and how it may affect you.You may not meet all the members of the skin cancer MDT but they will be involved in planning your care

Each type of cancer tumour type has an MDT where care is planned and treatment given by specialists in that particular type of cancer. There is a core set of team members but other professionals may be asked to join or advise the team when needed.

Why have a Skin Cancer MDT? The Skin Cancer MDT follows national guidelines on how to manage skin cancers and how the members should work with each other, with your GP and with other specialist services. Each team member is responsible for keeping up to date with changes and new treatments in skin cancer.

The team is there to ensure that each patient is given the same high standard of care and has the most appropriate investigations and treatments.

Some skin cancers may also be discussed at the more specialist regional MDT with team members from various hospitals within the area to ensure that the best possible treatment options are available to patients with more complex problems.

Who is in the Rotherham Skin Cancer MDT?Consultant Dermatologist It is likely your GP will have referred you to the care of a Consultant Dermatologist. This is the doctor who has overall responsibility for your treatment and is an expert in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. You may not always see your consultant; sometimes you may see one of their team.

Consultant Surgeon If your require specialist surgery this may be under the care of one of the hospital’s Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeons (for facial surgery) or Consultant General Surgeons and they may also see you for follow up care in the outpatient clinics.

Consultant Histopathologist Pathologists are doctors who are experts in looking at tissue samples under the microscope to see if cancer cells are present and if so the type of cancer and how it is likely to behave. This helps us to decide on the best treatment. The Pathologist in the team has a special interest in skin cancer.

Consultant Oncologist This is a doctor who is an expert in non-surgical treatments for cancer; this may include radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Should you need these treatments for your condition this will be carried out at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. The Oncologist advises the team about non surgical treatments which may be appropriate for your skin cancer.

Clinical Nurse Specialist in Skin Cancer The Clinical Nurse Specialist is based in the Dermatology Department and has a special interest and knowledge in skin cancer care. The nurse’s role is to provide information and support to you and your family during and after your treatment. The Clinical Nurse Specialist acts as your Key Worker and is the link between you and the MDT team.

MDT Co-ordinator The MDT co-ordinator provides clerical support for the MDT meetings and records information from the meetings and decisions that the team makes. They also ensure that appropriate information is communicated to those who require it.

There are other health professionals who are advisers to the Skin Cancer MDT and asked to attend or advise the team when appropriate.

How is my treatment decided? To make sure you are given the most appropriate treatment for your skin cancer, your case will be discussed at an MDT meeting attended by members of the skin cancer team. At the meeting the team will discuss all the options for your treatment under the National Guidelines for skin cancer care.

The Skin Cancer MDT

Following the MDT meeting each patient will receive an appointment to see their Consultant or Clinical Nurse Specialist to discuss the treatment plan. You will be able to ask any questions you have and we will give you as much information as you would like.

Your GP will be kept informed too by letter of all Skin Cancer MDT discussions.

Where will my treatment and follow up care be given? Treatment for skin cancer is generally skin surgery and whenever possible this will be performed at Rotherham Hospital by a member of the Skin Cancer MDT. However occasionally you may require more specialist surgery which may mean being treated in Sheffield either at the Northern General or Royal Hallamshire hospitals.

There is also a Specialist Oncologist based at Weston Park Hospital. Some types of skin cancer may require their involvement in your care.

Follow up care will be under your Consultant at Rotherham Hospital

If you receive skin cancer treatment at another hospital you may still choose to have your routine follow up care at Rotherham Hospital.
