THIS WEEK THE SANCTUARY LAMP BURNS IN HONOUR OF JOSE MATHEW

The office will be closed Good Friday, April 19th and will reopen 9:00am

Tuesday, April 23rd. Office volunteers will return April 27th.

FROM THE PARISH PRIEST ALLELUIA ! It is difficult to point to any one particular moment as the climax of the Easter Vigil: there are so many wonderful ones! But they must certainly include the proclamation of the Easter “Alleluia” before the Gospel. Ever since Ash Wednesday, this word has not been heard in church at all. As it has always been associated with the joy of Easter, it is not heard during the entire penance-tide that is Lent. The Easter Alleluia has a special significance. It is not simply a cry of present joy. It is the foretaste of what heaven will be like. It helps us to look forward to our eternal destiny when we will share in the everlasting glory and joy of the general resurrection of the dead on the Last Day. For Easter is not to be seen merely as a memorial of an event that took place a long time ago. Nor is it simply the end of a sad and terrible story of suffering and injustice inflicted on God’s only Son made man. It is rather the beginning of God’s final victory over sin and death—a victory in which we all have a stake and a share through our baptism. That is why we celebrate baptism above all at Easter, and why we renew our baptismal faith and promises at Mass on this Easter Day, being sprinkled afresh with the water which was blessed last night at the Vigil especially to

confer the grace of holy baptism. When we were baptised, as St. Paul teaches us, we were first of all baptised into Christ’s death. This means that we became sharers in His death, just as we were already sharers in death through our first parents, Adam and Eve. Now Adam and Eve brought unending death on themselves and all their descendents by disobeying God and following the devil’s temptation. But Christ has transformed death into the gateway to eternal life. So baptism is also a share in Christ’s resurrection. Lent began when our foreheads were marked with ashes and we heard those sobering words which were addressed to Adam and Eve after the Fall: “Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return”. In sorrow for our sins we then did penance throughout the forty days following, so as to prepare ourselves worthily to take part in the celebration of Our Lord’s Passion and Death during this last Holy Week. Now that we have passed through that time, we are at last able to celebrate the victory which Our Lord has won for us by His death and resurrection. The “Alleluia” returns at Easter with even greater frequency than usual. During the fifty days of Eastertide, which exceeds Lent in length just as the unending joy of the Resurrection will exceed all the sorrows of our time of suffering in this world, we hear the word “Alleluia” constantly at Mass and the Divine Office. We may have many trials and sorrows still to endure in this life, both as individuals and as the Church militant— but for the faithful, victory is now sure. And finally, what does the word “Alleluia” mean? It is a Hebrew word: “Praise be to God!” for all His wonderful deeds; for creation; for the gift of life; for the gift of Christ His Son, and for the hope of everlasting life which He gives us, and which this day, the greatest day of the year, brings to new life in our hearts and minds. Together with Fr Tom, the deacons, Arthur and the parish staff I wish you and yours a blessed Easter.

Please note in May the First Saturday Traditional Latin Mass is cancelled, due to the First Holy Communion retreats and Masses.

Archdiocesan Day of Prayer for Vocations

Cardinal Collins has designated Friday, May 3, 2019 as the Archdiocesan Day of Prayer for Vocations. We have three prayer intentions on this day: for the right discernment of vocations still unfolding; for endurance in committed vocations; and for an increase of priestly and religious vocations. Our parish prayer initiative is for an increase in Vocations. Check poster for details. If you are unable to attend this event, please take a moment to pray for vocations on Friday, May 3. Vocation resources can be found on the Office of Vocations’ website: www.vocationstoronto.ca.

NEOPHYTE MASS Cardinal Collins invites all of the newly baptized and those who W ill be received into the Church this Easter to our annual Neophyte Mass. The Mass will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 2:00pm at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Michael.

Living the Gospel by supporting vocations

Martin Dicuangco had a life-changing encounter when he visited Serra House, a residence run by St. Augustine's Seminary for those discerning a priestly vocation. He is now a third-year theology student at St. Augustine’s. “I thank ShareLife for supporting St. Augustine’s Seminary,” says Martin, “where young men like myself, after experiencing the love of Christ, are joyfully preparing for ordination to the priesthood.”

May 5 is ShareLife Sunday. Please give generously.
