Sibu Company StorySibu, the sea buckthorn company, began in 2002 with its founder,

Bruce McMullin, taking his adopted daughter back to her birth-land of India. During this trip, Bruce was approached by some former business contacts about an opportunity to bring Tibetan Sea Buckthorn from the Himalayas to the US. After months of research, it became apparent to Bruce that this little orange berry possessed characteristics unlike any natural food source in the world. Shortly thereafter, Sibu was formed.

Sibu made significant capital investments into the Tibetan Himalayan regions to set up numerous small processing stations. Sibu also set up co-ops and put in place “fair-trade” purchasing contracts to pay local villagers to hand-harvest this wild sea buckthorn, thus helping impoverished locals with an opportunity to work and earn fair compensation. It is this system that Sibu has organized that allows for it to get the best quality sea buckthorn materials in the world, while helping to fight the poverty in many impoverished communities.

Sea Buckthorn Story

High amongst the towering Himalayan mountain peaks comes a berry that the people of Tibet have long revered as The Holy Fruit of the Himalayas. The sea buckthorn berry – diminutive in size and appearance, yet bursting with unique nutritive characteristics not found anywhere else in the natural kingdom. For thousands of years, the plant has tenaciously endured in the high altitudes and extreme mountain climate. Contrary to reason, this adversity from the elements actually creates an optimum environment for a fruit dense with nutrients - 190 bioactive nutrients, to be exact. The lack of oxygen and intense solar radiation at this high elevation gives the sea buckthorn a rare nutrient profile including: 10 X more vitamin C than oranges, 8 X more vitamin E than almonds, and rare plant based omega fatty acids 3, 6, 7, and 9.

It is the Omega 7 that really makes sea buckthorn stand out fromthe other “superfruits”. Omega 7 is found in only a few sources in the world. One other known source of Omega 7 is the macadamia nut.

Sea buckthorn, on the other hand, has twice the amount of Omega 7 than macadamia nuts have but instead of the added fat content, sea buckthorn has vitamins, minerals, phyto-sterols, amino acids, flavonoids, carotenoids…anti-oxidants galore. Another advantage Sibu sea buckthorn has relates to our methods of harvesting and processing the berries. Our berries are hand-harvested from wild-growing shrubs. The berries are then carried to our local processing stations where they are made into a puree and containerized within about an hour. This ensures minimal nutrient loss, as sea buckthorn’s high EFA content can make the handling of the berries a bit tricky. No portion of the berry is wasted. Giving Back

Sibu’s existence is rooted in the ideals of fair-trade and giving back to the communities that our company is benefiting from. Before we even brought our first Sibu product to the marketplace, we helped establish sea buckthorn harvesting and processing co-operatives in numerous Tibetan villages. In fact, before Sibu was even created, founder Bruce McMullin purchased processing equipment and set up processing stations for villagers to use for the future trade he foresaw.

Bruce and some other Sibu executives have been involved in humanitarian outreach across the globe for many years. Bruce sat on the board of directors for CHOICE Humanitarian for a number of years and has been part of that organization for over a decade. From this, he has created a new non-profit foundation called the Tashi foundation in which both a portion of Sibu revenues as well as private donation can finance humanitarian outreach projects in Tibet as well as other impoverished places like sub-Saharan Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.
