PAGE 2 THE SHEPHERD’S BULLETIN

Hello Indianhead Sheep & Goat Breeders. My name is Lily Stewart and I have the honor of being the 2018 president. I will start with a little about me. I am a born and raised farmer, my parents were the 5th generation on the home farm in Sauk County Wisconsin. The 6th of 11 kids on a dairy farm that milked Guernsey cattle. Moved to Eau Claire in 1971 to train and care for horses.

Moved to Dunn county in 1973 and still there. Had many changes worked, at Menards, Meyer Brothers, Uniroyal, and Nestles plus milked for local farmers. Had our own small

herd of Jersey cattle. Goats came into my life for the heath of one of my children in 1976. Then they were gone. Six kids, multiple jobs and family came first, plus we had Jerseys. In 1998 goats were back, was gearing up to go commercial, once again health raised its ugly head, this time mine and we cut back to just for our use. Went back to school had a great adventure but that’s another story. Sold the last of the goats in 2007. In 2011 took the money from the last 13 I sold and purchased 3 does. I have not looked back. I am now retired and the goats are my physical therapy, nutrition therapy, and my emotional therapy. I will have goats as long as I can care for them! They keep me in agriculture, in touch with the earth and help the world! The biggest thing they do is keep me young. I am what you would call a hobbyist have the luxury of spending more money then I make although they are pretty self-supporting with the exception of showing. It has been a great journey; I have been blessed and believe I need to return the efforts others have made in me.

Indianhead Sheep & Goat Breeders Association is an organization with a long history. One of my goals is to capture all that information, get it written down, and saved. Looking for someone with the same interest to help or spearhead that project. Volunteers to the rescue after all that is the strength of ISGBA. I understand this will be a huge undertaking, but if we don’t know our history how can we move forward. I have the boxes that follow the president. Been waiting to share that treasure when they are opened. Input from members/nonmembers/interested parties please, after all time is my greatest asset to ISGBA. Email [email protected] this email is different to help me sort. ISGBA will have the 25th clinic in February 2019 wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the history done and a book published for this mile stone? The Small Ruminant clinic was a success didn’t even go into the red. We served 117 meals, presented 2 $500 scholarships, excellent silent auction with many donors. Auction donor list is in this newsletter…THANK YOU! When polled in one session ½ were sheep and ½ were goat, and I felt we had a wide representation of all ages youth to us old ones like me. I saw a lot of younger adults, and youth searching for knowledge. I saw older folks searching for knowledge. What a great mix! This is the heart of ISGBA.

The Board is planning some tours/field days and a FAMACHA clinic more info to follow check our Facebook page and the website for more info as it becomes available.

Check out the LOGO contest also posted in this letter.

Signing off. If things work right and I don’t procrastinate there will be a monthly bleep from me on the web site. --Lily Stewart

24th Small Ruminant Clinic and Trade Show Summary Saturday, February 3, 2018, started as a snowy day, that did not stop 120-plus people from attending the Indianhead Sheep & Goat Breeders Association’s 24th Annual Clinic. The name this year was changed to Small Ruminant Clinic to reflect the addition of goats to the formerly named Indianhead Sheep Breeders Association. That change approved by Association members at the 2017 clinic has brought together sheep and goats producers in the 22 county Indianhead region of Wisconsin to support both species. Held at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technology College in Rice Lake Wisconsin. The WITC Conference facility wel-comed us with helping hands and a wonderful space.

Registration was a busy 45 minutes and went pretty smoothly. Attendees were handed their folder with name tag attached. The folder held some very important items including a ballot with biographies for the paid members. Everyone got their meal ticket and the conference program, in addition, it held sheep info and a grilling pamphlet from the American Lamb Board and the ISGBA Spring Show Lamb & Kid Sale flyer. I hope this provided all attendee with a place to keep all the handouts. We had a big pot of coffee and fresh goat chevre in several flavors, blackberry jam and crackers to snack on before we got down to learning.

There is a copy of the clinic program included in the newsletter that you can refer to.

The Clinic had more than one track with a Youth program in the shop and adjoining room downstairs. The big main room for bigger groups and after lunch broken into 3 rooms. Dr. Cindy Wolf presented on State of the Industry and Using Technology. The youth had an Intro to Goats and Sheep; Meat and Dairy with Dr. Justin Luther, Gary Meyer, and Lily Stewart.

Next sessions Dr. Justin Luther with the help of UW-River Falls students; Rebecca Storlie and Montana Lins presented on Out-of-Season Breeding and Development of Novel Cervical AI System for Sheep. The youth had Bill Keough presenting Feeding Show Small Ruminants.

Our 11 a.m. included sessions Dr. Wolf presenting Reducing Newborn Mortality Rates. In the shop for the youth Dr. Luther, Brittney, Briana Ryan and Cami Subra held a Fitting session for Sheep and Goats with real live animals!

Lunch was served buffet style menu: lamb lasagna, or fried chicken, sheep milk cheddar, salad, choice of dressing, california blend vegetables, bread stick with marinara sauce. While waiting in line attendees could view the silent auction items. As we enjoyed our meal announced the 2018 Friend of the Association Award Terry Babros of Valley Feeds, Menomonie, Wisconsin and the 2018 Extra Mile Award going to Marlin Subra. Congratulations and thank you both for your dedication and service to our industry.

ISGBA was once again fortunate to have funds for two $500 scholarships, the winners were:

Dylan Klindworth and Cami Subri. WAY TO GO Dylan and Cami! Both are assets to the sheep and goat industry and the world.

This year ISGBA awarded two $50 Essay Contest winners David Thompson and Nathan Thompson. Our future is bright with youth of this caliber participating in the sheep and goat industry. This is an area much neglected by our youth. The winners had excellent essays and not to distract from their accomplish-ment, make your board work harder! summer, or after school starts, use your teachers, they are an asset. Take a class assignment turn it into an enter. Need a speech for 4-H, then turn it in to enter. The more essays that are summited and I bet ISGBA can justify more winners.

Photo contest winners were awarded $20 for each category

Scenic a picture with sheep or goat/s in it.

Just lamb or kid- picture with one or more lambs or kids

Youth: Amelia Tonn Adult: Lori Gorell

Members get your cameras out and take pictures! It would be wonderful to overflow the pictures boards next year, and if you win it helps pay for the conference! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Look at the photo contest as a learning experience, and unlike most education this is a freebie at no extra cost.

We announced the three new board members; Marie Pagenkopf, John Peterson and Scott Thompson. Welcome aboard!

Back to work we go. Hard decision on this time slot with 3 sessions; Dr. Wolf Coccidia & Parasites, Bill Keough Micro Minerals and Ration Balancing, and Jessica Getschel Ventilation Principles and Sys-tems. Back in the shop area the sheep and goats were used once again by Dr. Luther, Brittney & Brianna Ryan, & Cami Subri; Showing Sheep and Goats.

2:30 p.m. brought us once again to a decision between, Dr. Wolf’s Autopsy & Tubing Newborns, Marlin Subra Presenting Dr. Dan Morrical’s material Crossbreeding---Industry Doesn’t Capitalize and Eric Fromm on contract form USDA-WS for WI DNR Predation and Guard Animals. The youth enjoyed a skill-a-thon and made sheep food craft!

End of the day closing remarks. Closed silent auction, (list of donors included in newsletter, thank you all) what a huge success many items donated not only by industry but individuals as well! The new board held a meeting and elected officers and set the next meeting. Off into the snowy evening and back to chores we go.

Thank You clinic donors. Without you we would not be able to provide the quality experience that this Clinic has historical and once again showcased. Donors are listed in the newsletter members please utilize them as best you can when making sheep and goat decision.

As 2018 Small Ruminant Clinic has been wrapped up, it is now time to work on the milestone 25th Clinic for Indianhead Sheep and Goat Breeders Association. We need volunteers to help. The passing of Mark Chris-tianson leaves a big hole in his family, ISGBA, the sheep industry and the clinic. Mark chaired both the essay contest and the photo contest and we need someone to step up and take this on.

Best wishes to all and a happy and trouble free lambing and kidding! --Lily Stewart

FUN FACT

“Chew the Cud” “To ruminate or to deliberate over something for

more than four centuries is to think it over. Likening human chewing to cows and other ruminants, who

bring up food in a cud that is chewed and swallowed again, goes all the way back to the Book of Josiah

which was translated in 1382. Chewing the cud in the sense of deep thinking had made it’s way into a book

of homilies by 1547. Now that’s ancient.”

Article from the Organic Broadcaster

Goat farmer finds new book a welcome resource By Leslie Svacina

When it comes to goats, there’s not much research, health care products, equipment, reference books, or even veterinarians who have basic knowledge about or are willing to work with goats. Goat producers usually put on their “goat glasses” and adapt sheep or other ruminant information to manage the health needs of their herd.

That’s why Gianaclis Caldwell’s new book, Holistic Goat Care, is such a welcome resource. The book is a comprehensive guide to raising healthy goats, and solving health issues that arise. It’s well suited for both the new and experienced goat keeper, and covers all types of goats. Topics include:

Starting and managing a herd, and understanding goat behavior

Farm management, nutrition needs, and feed choice

Basic skills for managing herd health

Breeding, pregnancy, delivery, caring for kids, milking

Managing specific goat health problems, including signs and symptoms, as well as treatments and prevention options

Caldwell presents the content in an easy-to-read manner that flows well, whether one reads the book in its entirety or uses it as a reference guide. Throughout the book, she blends her

practical experience with goats with science-based information. Caldwell also takes a broad holistic approach to health care for goats.

While the goat resources that do exist touch on many of the same topics, most do not have the depth of this book, nor recognize holistic management practices.

Since there are few veterinarians in our area who are knowledgeable on goats, I’ve added a goat veterinary textbook to my stack of resources. While Holistic Goat Care doesn’t dive deep into veteri-nary medical speak, it is a great resource for goat producers. It is much easier to read than the vet-erinary textbook, and explains terminology and practices for those who may not have formal training or background in animal science. The book also includes a variety of supply lists, check lists, termi-nology, signs/symptoms, resource lists, photos, troubleshooting guides, A-Z list of disorders, and a glossary. Additionally, the value of the content is more reasonable—about $40 versus $100 or more for a textbook.

I especially liked the feed choice section, which includes information about pasture, grazing, browse, and forages. Other feeding options were covered, but since I practice rotational grazing, I really ap-preciated the information in this section.

I also liked the information on the role of minerals, vitamins and supplements, covered both in the feed choice and nutritional needs chapters. The book covers how minerals interact with each oth-er, their impact on a goat’s development, signs of deficiencies, risks of an overabundance of min-erals, and approaches to supplement for minerals.

The step-by-step instructions on how to do your own fecal float test to look at parasite loads are good, too. She includes a supply list and instructional photos. There isn’t any information on what certain parasite eggs look like. However, that information is easily accessible online or through a consult with your vet.

I never want to lose one of my goats, but I also recognize the importance of continuing to learn how to care for my livestock. Over the years, I’ve had our veterinarian out to the farm to do necrop-sies. While observing live animal behavior and symptoms can help us draw conclusions to why a goat may have an ailment, it doesn’t always tell us what is actually happening or why. Necropsies have helped answer these questions and as a result I’ve made some adjustments on feeding and management practices. It’s not always feasible to get a vet out to our farm or bring the animal into the clinic. This guide helps solve this challenge by providing clear instructions on doing a necropsy.

If you’re getting started with goats, the first part of the book includes a variety of information on goat behavior, fencing, feeding, animal handling tips, and so on.

While this book isn’t a substitution for veterinary care, it is a very comprehensive holistic health care reference that all goat farmers should consider having on their bookshelf.

Café Lamb & Goat

INGREDIENTS

For the lamb:

3-4 pounds boneless leg of lamb

1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup white wine 2 tablespoons olive oil divid-

ed 1 teaspoon dried thyme or

oregano

1 teaspoon garlic powder chopped fresh parsley for

garnish salt and pepper

For the gravy:

3 tablespoons salted butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose

flour salt and pepper

Instant Pot Leg of Lamb with Gravy

INSTRUCTIONS Cooking the lamb:

1. Remove any netting from the lamb and pat dry with paper towels. Season all over with salt, pepper, thyme, and garlic. 2. Select the sauté mode on the pressure cooker for medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to coat the bottom. 3. When the pot is hot, add lamb leg and brown all over, a few minutes per side. Transfer the lamb leg to a large plate. 4. Add white wine and let it simmer for a few minutes while you scrape up all brown bits stuck to the bottom of the pot. Turn off the sauté mode. 5. Add water. Transfer the lamb back to the pot. Secure and seal the lid. Cook for 90 minutes at high pressure, fol-lowed by a 20 minute natural release. Manually release remaining pressure using the steam handle. 6. While waiting for the natural pressure release, preheat the oven to 400 F. 7. When the pot has depressurized, transfer the lamb to a baking dish, leaving the liquid in the pot. 8. Drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil on top of the lamb. Bake the lamb until nicely browned on top, about 15 minutes.

Making the gravy:

1. While waiting for the lamb to bake, pour all of the liquid from the pressure cooker pot into a bowl. Let the fat rise to the top and use a spoon to skim off the fat. Measure out 2 cups of liquid and discard the rest. 2. Select the sauté mode on the pressure cooker for medium heat. Add butter and stir until melted. 3. Add flour on top of the melted butter. Stir together for a minute. 4. Gradually pour in reserved 2 cups of liquid as you stir together. Continue stirring until it thickens to your desired gravy consistency, about 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. 5. Serve sliced lamb with gravy poured on top. Optionally garnish with chopped parsley.
