The following pages of this bulletin provide information about our services this morning, including the text of our assigned readings and the music (at our 10:15 service), as well as news about upcoming events. Please take this bulletin with you to refer to in the coming days.

The small candle on the altar is a Candle for Peace. A practice begun in Russia, peace candles are being passed from church to church around the world. (Ours is from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, Oregon.) The candles and the story of the peace candle are available at the back of the church.

We hope guests and visitors will take a peace candle to their home church.

The Collect of the Day

The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying

The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with

great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

First Reading – Acts 1:6-14

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

When the apostles had come together, they asked Jesus, “Lord, is this the

time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Psalm 68:1-10, 33-36

A reader leads the congregation in saying the Psalm at the 8 AM service.

At the later service, the cantor sings the antiphon once, then the congregation sings the antiphon with the cantor. The Choir and/or a cantor sings the verses, with the congregation joining in singing the antiphon as indicated below.

1 Let God arise, and let his enemies be scattered; *

let those who hate him flee before him. 2 Let them vanish like smoke when the wind drives it away; *

as the wax melts at the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

3 But let the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; * let them also be merry and joyful.

Antiphon

4 Sing to God, sing praises to his Name; exalt him who rides upon the heavens; * YAHWEH is his Name, rejoice before him!

5 Father of orphans, defender of widows, * God in his holy habitation!

6 God gives the solitary a home and brings forth prisoners into freedom; * but the rebels shall live in dry places.

Antiphon

7 O God, when you went forth before your people, * when you marched through the wilderness,

8 The earth shook, and the skies poured down rain, at the presence of God, the God of Sinai, * at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

Antiphon

9 You sent a gracious rain, O God, upon your inheritance; * you refreshed the land when it was weary.

Page 8: The Seventh Sunday of Easter - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2017-05-28-Easter-7-Rite-II-at-8-and-1015.pdfMay 28, 2017  · Gospel Hymn Celtic Alleluia

8

10 Your people found their home in it; * in your goodness, O God, you have made provision for the poor.

Antiphon

33 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; * sing praises to the Lord.

34 He rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; * he sends forth his voice, his mighty voice.

35 Ascribe power to God; * his majesty is over Israel; his strength is in the skies.

36 How wonderful is God in his holy places! * the God of Israel giving strength and power to his people! Blessed be God!

Antiphon

Second Reading – 1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the First Letter of Peter.

As sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and

so death spread to all because all have sinned-- sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn Celtic Alleluia

The People stand (as they are able) for the reading of the Gospel that follows.

The Gospel Book is brought into the midst of the congregation and the following refrain is sung. The Choir will then sing a verse, then all sing the “Alleluia” refrain again.

Gospel – John 17:1-11

The People remain standing, as they are able, for the reading of the Gospel. The Deacon (or a Priest) reads the Gospel, first saying

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your

Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

“I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.”

Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Jed Holdorph

The Nicene Creed – all stand, as able BCP, p. 358

The Prayers of the People, Form VI BCP, p. 392

The Celebrant concludes the Prayers at the 10:15 service with a suitable Collect.

The Council of Nicaea, in the 4th century, forbade kneeling and confessions throughout the season of Easter. Accordingly, the confession will be omitted today.

The Exchange of the Peace

As able, all stand and prepare to greet one another in the Lord’s name, the Celebrant first saying

The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

Please greet those sitting beside you and in the rows in front of and/or behind you.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together.

For birthdays:

Watch over your children (child), O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives (life), through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For anniversaries:

O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

If other members of the congregation wish, they may ask for additional prayers and blessings.

A small “treasure chest” is placed on the chancel rail near the flowers. As members come forward for blessing, they may choose to place a thank offering in the chest. These gifts will be used to support outreach efforts for others in our community.

Offertory Music I will Praise Your Name by David Haas

The Congregation is invited to join in singing the refrain:

I will praise your name, my King and my God, I will praise your name, my King and my God.

Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine to the deacon.

While the table is prepared, ushers receive other offerings of money or other gifts and then present these offerings to the celebrant.

As the offerings are presented, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380

Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer B BCP, p. 367

The text of the prayer and responses is provided in the blue Book of Common Prayer, continuing on page 367. The setting for the Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy Lord …”) is sung as below.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Coffee Hour/Adult Forum — TODAY @ 9:15 AM Our weekly adult forum meets in Brooks Hall between the morning services, offering a time of fellowship, as well as a chance to exchange information or engage in deeper reflection.

Father Jed will facilitate an OPEN-ended conversation about life at Trinity, with a focus on how we might be more OPEN in all facets of our mission and ministries. He’s taking up a suggestion to call it a “JEDtalk” this week – but he hopes YOU’ll talk too!

In 2016, a representative of Verizon inquired if Trinity would be interested in being considered as a possible site for a new cell tower. Since then, we’ve had conversations with them and amongst ourselves. And now it looks serious. Join us next week to learn more and about factors that the Vestry needs to think about before/if we enter into a formal agreement to proceed.

Cove/COPY and the LAST DAY of our Silent Auction — TODAY!! Each year during the month of May, we focus a special effort in support of Cove/COPY – “Cove” referring to Cove, Oregon, the home of our Diocesan summer camp program; and “COPY” for Central Oregon Partnerships for Youth--the way we work with community partners to send at-risk children to summer camp! Children are selected by the Deschutes County Sheriff's COPY Program, Family Drug Court, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Trinity raises the funds for camp scholarships. 100% of these funds go toward the camp scholarships. That's right 100%!

Put in your bid for the Yarn Basket (with instruction book) and/or the Orvis 9' 5 WT fishing rod/reel and flies today during the Adult Forum between services or during Coffee Hour after the 10:15 service. We will announce the winners at Coffee Hour!

We are now 2/3 of the way to meeting our goal of sending 40 kids to camp this summer. It's time to let the kids know whether or not they will be selected for a camp scholarship. You can make a check out to Trinity Episcopal Church with “Cove/COPY” on the memo line. You can put cash into the Cove/COPY envelope found in the pews and add it to the collection basket, or you can donate after each service in Brooks Hall. Yes, we are equipped to take credit card donations. Thank you!

Trinity Pilgrims Hike: McKenzie River — Wednesday The Trinity Pilgrims hike this week will be a six mile round trip hike to the beautiful McKenzie River. All are welcome – details of the hike are sent by email to those on the hiking list. If you’d like to be added to the list, email Loretta Slepikas at [email protected]

A Party for our Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Acolytes — Thursday @ 5 PM We’re throwing a supper party for some of those who support our liturgies all through the year. It’s a chance to say thank you AND it’ll give us an opportunity to answer questions and/or review “best practices” for the various tasks that fall to those who read and serve on Sundays.

Please consider this an open invitation if you’d like to know more about how you might participate in worship as an acolyte, occasional reader or as a licensed Eucharistic Minister. Please let us know if you’re interested.

Page 15: The Seventh Sunday of Easter - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2017-05-28-Easter-7-Rite-II-at-8-and-1015.pdfMay 28, 2017  · Gospel Hymn Celtic Alleluia

15

Please make sure the church office knows if you’re coming, so we can be sure to have enough pizza and refreshments available!! (And please let us know of any dietary restrictions.)

NOTE: We’ll meet in St. Helens for this party, allowing us a chance to get ready for some of the changes that accompany the change of venue (starting on Sunday, June 4).

Pentecost Sunday — NEXT Sunday @ 8 and 10:15 AM

Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. There are a few ways for you to get into the act:

• Recalling the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, red is the liturgical color of the day. Everyone is encouraged to wear some red in two weeks.

• From our reading in Acts, we hear of how the Spirit gave the disciples the ability to speak in other tongues. You’re invited, as you are given ability to do so, to help read in a foreign tongue – not as a solo but as part of a chorus of voices, a chaotic congregational cacophony! Please look for a signup sheet and pick up some sample translations (new and improved this week!!).

• And Pentecost is an especially appropriate occasion for baptism. If you are interested in baptism on Pentecost Sunday for yourself or your child, please speak to Fr. Jed.

If, perchance, Italian is your language of choice, here’s an Italiano translation of Acts 2:1-4: E come il giorno della Pentecoste fu giunto, tutti erano insieme nel medesimo luogo.

A “Staycation” begins — NEXT Sunday @ 10:15 We’ll offer a couple of changes this summer, starting with a change of venue for the 10:15 service next Sunday. Following the change of scenery that many of us enjoyed last summer, we’ll gather in the St. Helens sanctuary for the later service. (The 8 am service stays rooted in Trinity.)

Thanks to those who will take on some extra jobs/complications to facilitate the change, especially members of our Altar Guild. (If you’d like to help, please let Donna Young know!!).

And we’ll need a couple of greeters each week. You only need to stand outside and smile, offer a warm welcome (and any navigational assistance needed!). Please look for the signup sheet today.

The Liturgical “Staycation” comes next — Sunday, June 11th In two weeks, the 10:15 service will become a bit more exotic. The essential form of the liturgy remains the same – as it is followed through much of the wider Anglican Communion – but the prayers we’ll use will be a fresh expression of that tradition. For the first part of the summer, we’ll “return” to New Zealand and adapt their official liturgy to our local context.

Where in the World is Father Jed? … Possibly in court (again this week)! Father Jed has jury duty again this week, so he may (or may not) be readily available.
