I. THYATIRA — The Open-Minded Man (REVELATION 2:18-29)

Rev 2:18-29 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

Page 2: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star.

29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

A. Advantages: (Rev 2:19)

1. A Worker,

2. A giver

3. A serverRev 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

B. Disadvantages: (Rev 2:19)

1. A self-righteous worker Rev 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.

2. Acceptance of false doctrine (Rev 2:20)Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

Rev 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

Rev 2:24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

3. Aphonic Religion (Revelation 2:20)Aphonic: Loss of the voice resulting from disease, injury to the vocal cords; mouthed but not spoken; noiseless; silent.

Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.

C. Remedies: (Rev 2:25)

1. Dedication Rev 2:24-25 24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.

2. Diligence (Rev 2:26)Rev 2:26-29 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

THYATIRA — The Open-Minded ManII. SARDIS — Rigid Man (REVELATION 3:1-6)

Rev 31 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of

Page 6: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

A. Advantages: (Rev 3:1, 4)

1. In the Right FamilyRev 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Page 7: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

Rev 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

You can tell a person’s love for the Bible by how they refer to the God-head. Jesus

is never called “king” till Rev. 19.

1Tim 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1Tim 6:14-15 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Page 8: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

Luke 19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.

Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

B. Disadvantages: (Rev 3:2)

2. Work done for Man not GodRev 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

C. Remedy: Rev 3:3

1. Remember

2. Retain

3. RepentRev 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee

as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

III. PHILADELPHIA — The Faithful (REVELATION 3:7-13)Rev 37 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. 9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. 10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Page 10: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. 13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

A. Advantages: (Rev 3: 8-11)

Respect God’s word as supreme,Rev 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Rev 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Rev 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Page 11: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

B. Disadvantages: (Rev 3:8, 11)

1. Small strength

2. Easily taken advantage ofRev 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Rev 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

C. Remedy: (Rev 3:10)

Follow God’s word with patience, Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

The open door is Christ’s responsibility man’s job is to follow his word (walk through the door). Being faithful to God’s Word will lead to the door He has open. When the Word of God is the priority, everything else will fall into place.

IV. LAODICEA — Common Christian- no extremes (REVELATION 3:14-22)

Rev 314 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Page 13: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

A. Advantages: (Rev 3: 15, 18, 20)

1. Does not go to extremes of evil, Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

2. Special investment offerRev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

3. Gets a personal call from God he can understandRev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Page 14: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

B. Disadvantages: (Rev 3:17) Sees no need to improve

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

The Laodiceans were rich, but not spiritually. They needed spiritual wealth

which can only come through the word of God.

C. Remedy: (Rev 3:19-20)1. Repent

2. Listen for God’s voiceRev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Jesus has been moved to the margins and pushed outside the Church altogether, He stands knocking at an individual’s heart.

Hymn from 1876- “Who at my door is standing”

Who at my door is standing,Patiently drawing near,

Entrance within demanding?Whose is the voice I hear?

Refrain

Sweetly the tones are falling;“Open the door for Me!

If thou wilt heed My calling,I will abide with thee.”

Lonely without He’s staying;Lonely within am I;

While I am still delaying,Will He not pass me by?

Refrain

All through the dark hours dreary,Knocking again is He;

Jesus, art Thou not weary,Waiting so long for me?

Refrain

Page 16: THE SEVEN PERSONALITIES IN THE CHURCH prt2

Door of my heart, I hasten!Thee will I open wide.

Though He rebuke and chasten,He shall with me abide.
