From Your From Your
PASTORPASTOR Things are Looking Good!
It’s been a fun summer for first Pres. A new garden project has provided an abundance of vegetables (mostly cucumbers!) and has been fun to watch “grow.” The second summer of our second service has continued to grow steadily and we continue to make progress in figuring out what we are doing. The building conversation continues to unfold slowly, but that feels like the right pace at this point. The Presbyterians Out Eating Together (POET) has continued to be a great fellowship opportunity. The youth had a great mission trip experience and are doing a fantastic job fixing up the youth room, and we had lots of summer guests and visitors with us again this year.
Which brings us to fall. School is starting and fall programming is right over the horizon, and we think it will be a great year. There are great changes coming on Wednesday nights (see Michael’s article for details) and we are hoping that they will help us improve as the program evolves.
One of the changes we are excited about is that this year we will be bringing on a new staff member to handle the cooking! After two years of discovering how hard it is to coordinate and cook each Wednesday (Thanks Amy and Erin!) we have taken the plunge and brought on a person to prepare the meals. Her name is Heather Baumgard, and some of you may know her either from McKeens restaurant or her own local baking business Playful Cupcaketions (http://playfulcupcaketions.com). We are thrilled to have Heather on board and look forward to welcoming her and getting to know her… and eating the food she will be making. Plan to join us the first few Wednesdays at least for what I think could easily be the cheapest best meal in town, with fellowship and study thrown in for free. Wednesday nights kick off on Sept 16th, hope to see you there.
4
Other than that, Fall will be filled with most of the “Normal” projects we have been working on. We are constantly trying to upgrade our adult education programs, men’s and women’s Bible studies begin after Labor Day, it looks like the fireside room may be getting a makeo-ver, we think we have fixed some sound issues in the fellowship hall, and we are working on a few improvements in the sound booth for the sanctuary. Just normal everyday stuff, but it helps us do what we do, and hopefully what we do helps us be the church.
I hope you will plan on being active in the many opportunities that will be provided this Fall. There are literally dozens of ways to plug in and be connected. Don’t let simply coming to church or being a “member” be the extent of your involvement. Meet some people, serve some people, learn something new, and have fun doing it. All of this various activity gives us a chance to develop our relationships within the church and deepen our faith and service to Jesus. Make it a point to find something for you. I think you’ll be glad you did.
Blessings,
Clint
Again this year, First Presbyterian Church will be hosting break-
fast and team devotionals on varsity game days. This has been a
great experience for us and we are thankful for the opportunity to
welcome the team. The numbers have grown steadily and we are
regularly serving well over 75 young men at each meal. In order
to keep up with the demand, we need your help. This can involve
donating food, cooking, serving, or coordinating volunteers. If
you are interested in being a part of a breakfast team, call 336-
1649, check the sign up sheet in the narthex or sign up on our
website at www.fpcspiritlake.org

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give
thanks to him and praise his name. Psalm 100:4 (NRSV)
These beautiful words written by the Psalmist David capture the wonder and splendor of giving thanks to the One who is at work in our lives in so many powerful ways. There is much to be thankful for at First Presbyterian Church as we look towards the beginning of this next school year! Throughout the summer, our high school students have served others alongside three partner Presbyterian congregations in our community and region in this year’s annual summer mission trip (http://sentbylove.com), we joined four other youth groups for a laser tag tournament in Spencer, and redecorated our youth room! Likewise, our 5th-6th grade students had a great time hanging out in Arnolds Park, our 7th-8th grade students had a fun night out at the movies, and we served 80 students in our annual Vacation Bible School (and raised over $600 for the Dream Center in Spencer, IA)! Needless to say, our youth have stayed connected throughout the summer, but with the new school year upon us, I am excited to share with you the numerous “projects” that we have been hard at work preparing. Recharge We are proud to announce that Wednesday Night Fellowship will continue this year with a new name: Recharge! After two full years, our family and adult oriented Wednesday night program continues to grow and we have seen how it has been an incredible opportunity for families to eat together at a table, fellowship with others, and grow in their faith. Wednesday night has become a significant part of our church family’s week, an opportunity to gather and recharge in the middle of the week, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We will continue to meet for our family meal at 5:30pm, and classes for the entire church family, from nursery to adult, will begin at 6:00pm. Along with our new name, our weekly menu has taken the next step forward with the addition of Heather Baumgard as our new chef (see Pastor Clint’s article for more information. Did we mention her cupcakes?). In addition to a new face in the kitchen, we will be adding new year-long adult small group Bible studies to our weekly Recharge schedule, led by Pam DenHerder and Rachelle Gewecke. These will continue to be accompanied by our quarterly adult oriented Bible, theology, and topical classes taught by Pastor Clint and others. And if
6
that isn’t enough, our Sunday School and Recharge teams have inte-grated our Sunday/Wednesday student curriculums, making it possible for your family to dig deep into the scriptures and study the same Bible passage together throughout the week. While we will explore the same scripture on Sunday and Wednesday, each class will be different with new class activities and illustrations used in each. Don’t miss our Recharge kickoff on September 16th at 5:30pm! Not only will you get to enjoy the many talents of our new cook but the church garden team plans to have some surprises to share with you as well!
New Check In System: Families who participated in this year’s VBS have already used our brand new computer check-in system that will be used for children’s Sunday School and for Recharge. Our Christian Education committee has been working diligently for the last year to identify and implement the best practices for our students’ safety. The conversation started because we are absolutely thrilled to continue to host new families, guests, and visitors almost every Sunday and Wednesday night and we want to help our teachers learn their names, have reliable ways to track students’ attendance, communicate with the families of students, and be certain that students are returned to their parents safely. While we have not had any student safety concerns raised by our church family, the committee believes that this will be a unique opportunity for our congregation to demonstrate our commitment to implement best prac-tices in order to best serve our students, guests and visitors, and our church family.
Introducing: Act II: We are also proud to announce that our weekly high school youth group will see an addition this year! High school students are still invit-ed to join us for a meal at 6:45pm and youth group that will begin at 7:15pm. Youth group will conclude by 8:20pm but immediately follow-ing, interested students are invited to join me for a high school small group Bible study that digs deeper into the material discussed during our regular high school hour. This “second act” will provide a space for students to jump into the scriptures, to explore their own faith identity, and even to engage in unique service in our youth group and congrega-tion!
High School Parent Meeting: September 9th: All parents of our high school students are strongly encouraged to join us on September 9th at 7:30pm in the newly decorated youth room to preview the upcoming high school student calendar, to learn about the initial planning of next summer’s mission trip, sign up for updates on activities for your student, and learn how you can help make our high school ministries a continued success!
7
8th Grade Confirmation: I am also looking forward to another exciting year of Confirmation! Par-ents and 8th grade students are invited to join me for a Confirmation orientation during the Sunday School hour on September 20th in the Confirmation room (next to the youth room) starting at 10:15am. Join us as we explore the Confirmation calendar, talk about the meaning of Confirmation, expectations for students and their families, and to offi-cially register your student in the program.
Sunday School Kickoff: If any of this feels overwhelming, make sure to join us for our Sunday School kickoff breakfast at 10:10am on Sunday September 13th. We will share with you more information about these exciting changes, take questions, and celebrate the exciting year that lies ahead of us!
Conclusion? (Finally.) With so much growth within our youth and family ministries, I am grate-ful for God’s presence within our midst. With so many changes, there will doubtless be things that need tweaking and courses that need cor-recting, but with patience, and mutual love for each other, I believe that God will be at work in our congregation using this growth as an oppor-tunity to draw us closer to the good news in Christ. Whether you join one of the new adult small group Bible studies, join Act II, or simply join us for food and fellowship for the first time during Recharge, join us for a season filled with thanksgiving for all that God is doing at First Pres-byterian Church. Michael

The Presbyterian Women are honoring the memory of two church members who recently passed away with the purchase of books for our church library. “Sensible Shoes” by Sharon Garlough Brown is given in memory of Mary Naviaux. This book “follows the stories of four women as they are drawn into a spiritual formation journey at a retreat center”. A reviewer feels that this book encourages us to “communicate with God in new ways, broadening our spiritual journey one step at a time.” “Being Mortal” is given in memory of Marvis Reed. One reviewer comments, “We have come to medicalize aging, frailty, and death, treating them as if they were just one more clinical problem to overcome. However , it is not only medicine that is needed in one’s declining years but life – a life with meaning, a life as rich and full as possible under the circumstances.”
We have had a lot of nice donations; several have been added to the library and others will be placed in a “free basket”. Please help yourself to these books and DVD’s donated by Donna Gray, Charlene Radcliffe, Dave Rowlands and Amy Stover. Thank you so much for passing along these items to our church family.
I’ll be looking for you in the library.

and don’t use them, we’ll take them. We are
forwarding them on to a man in a care center in
Aurelia who clips them and sends them to the
troops overseas. They can even use outdated
ones up to 2 months old. The troops thank you.
