The Brihanmumbai Munici-pal Corporation (BMC) hasissued notices to more than300 slum dwellers living atMakhurd-Shivaji Nagar andGovandi in the eastern sub-urbs for illegal extension oftheir residential properties.The BMC move came aftera house collapsed in Govandion July 23 killing four per-sons of the same family. Ac-cording to the BMC, shantiesor huts that are above theheight of 14 feet are illegaland the civic officials havesaid that most of the slumsviolate the guidelines by con-structing additional floors.Following the July 23 inci-dent, the M East (ME) wardoffice of the BMC had startedissuing fresh notices to theslum dwellers."We have issued notices tomore than 300 owners, whohave illegal extensions of

their slums. We will demol-ish the structure if they don'tdo it by themselves. In thepast one week, we have de-molished seven of suchstructures," said MahendraUbale, assistant municipalcommissioner and in-chargeof ME ward.Ubale has said that theBMC is identifying illegalstructures and reaching outto their owners and by theend of this month, they planto demolish more such struc-

tures."We cannot say how manystructures will be demol-ished as we have not set anytarget. firm view that the learnedpublic prosecutor has consid-ered the progress in the in-vestigation and the part ofthe investigation that is yet tobe completed in proper per-spective and that after apply-ing mind independently hehas submitted the report.”The court said that in viewof the matter, it would be justto extend detention of the ac-cused and grant time for in-

vestigation for a period of 30more days.This is the second time thecourt has extended time forfiling the chargesheet, afterhaving given 60-day exten-sion earlier.The court further said in itsorder that it has perused thecase diary that has beenplaced on record and is satis-fied that the reasons cited bythe prosecutor for the exten-

A sessions court has grantedpre-arrest bail to a man andfour members of his family ina dowry harassment case, inwhich the wife had also al-leged forcible sex that led towaist-down paralysis. Thecourt observed that while theyoung girl suffering paralysiswas unfortunate, being herhusband the man cannot besaid to have committed any-thing illegal. Additional sessions judgeSanjashree J Gharat stated inher order, “It is the furthergrievance of the complainantthat the husband committed

sexual intercourse with heragainst her wish.” The courtwent on to say, “However, itcannot be said that he commit-ted any illegal thing.” An exception to the offenceof rape under the Indian PenalCode reads that sexual inter-course or sexual acts of a manwith his own wife, the wife notbeing below 15 years of age, isnot rape. Thus, marital rape is still not

a crime in India. The courtcalled it “very unfortunate”that the young girl sufferedfrom paralysis. It said that the man and hisparents cannot be held respon-sible for this. The woman, whogot married in November lastyear, had complained that onemonth after marriage her hus-band had started committingforcible sexual intercourse. InJanuary, after an intercourse,

she had started feeling unwell.When she went to a doctor, shewas informed that she had suf-fered paralysis below herwaist.In her complaint, the womanalleged that her in-laws put re-strictions on her, taunted,abused and demanded dowry.The husband and his familyclaimed protection from ar-rest, stating they had beenfalsely implicated and thatthey had not demanded dowry.The court remarked on this as-pect that while the woman hadclaimed that she was mistreat-ed by the family for not payingdowry, she had not specifiedwhat was the demand made bythem.

Over 3,118 students have beenadmitted under Right to Edu-cation (RTE) admission tillnow in the city, while over60,992 have been admitted inthe state. The admissionprocess is still on in order togive more time to studentsand parents to confirm seatsin private-unaided schools.The first round of admis-sion under RTE has beencompleted. The second roundof admission will be conduct-ed from next week, said a sen-ior official of the office of thedirector of primary educa-tion. The officer said, "Wehave completed the firstround of admission. Current-

ly, we are completing theprocess of confirmation ofadmissions. We will conductthe second admission roundin the next week."This year, the deadline forRTE admission was post-poned four times in order toprovide more time to parentsand students to complete theadmission process. Parents ofstudents were selected in thefirst admission round weregiven time till July 31 to con-firm admissions.As per the data published onthe online portal https://stu-dent.maharashtra.gov.in/adm_portal/Users/rteindex onThursday, 3,118 students haveconfirmed admissions, out of4,985 who were selected.There are 6,463 vacant seats

in 352 schools registered forRTE admissions in Mumbai.In Maharashtra, 60,992 stu-dents have confirmed admis-sions out of 82,129 studentswho were selected for the96,684 vacant seats in 9,432schools under RTE admis-sions.Under the Right of Childrento Free and Compulsory Edu-cation (RTE) Act, 2009, 25 percent seats are reserved for theenrollment of deprived andvulnerable children in the en-try-level of eligible privatenon-subsidised schools forthe academic year 2021-22.Students from financiallyweak backgrounds can availfree and compulsory educa-tion till Class 8 in theseschools.

The Kurla police registered anoffence against unknown cyberfraudsters after they allegedlyduped a teenage boy of Rs 4 lakh.Though the fraud had taken placein the first week of June, theteenager hid the matter from hisparents for the past two months.On June 1, the victim, who wantedto sell his IPhone, sharedphotographs of the phone on apopular online marketplace. Assoon as he shared the images, theboy received a call from anunknown number and the calleridentified himself as Vikas.According to the police, Vikas wasready to buy it for Rs 17,000 andthe boy also agreed with the price.Vikas claimed that he would makepayment online and asked mobilenumber linked to mobile banking.Then the accused asked the boy totransfer Rs 5 and Vikas alsotransferred Rs 5. Later the accusedasked to transfer Rs 10 andreturned it immediately.Later, Vikas asked the boy to pay Rs5,000 and the teenager, who wasunaware of the fraud, transferredthe money. This time, Vikas did notreturn him anything and continuedto demand more money.Soon, Vikas asked the boy to sharethe OTP received on his mother'smobile phone and as the victimshared the OTP, Rs 1 lakh had beendebited from her account, said thepolice. For the next two days, Vikascontinued to ask for the OTPnumbers which the boy had shared,said police. When the teenagerasked to return the money, Vikasstopped entertaining his calls.Recently when the teenager's fatherupdated his passbook he wasshocked to see the transactions ofRs 4.07 lakh. The Kandivali police arrested aperson for allegedly duping anelderly woman of Rs 15,000 byposing as BrihanmumbaiMunicipal Corporation (BMC)officials. The police launched asearch for his accomplice andregistered an offence against theduo based on the complaint.The accused duo, who work at atoll collection plaza, reportedlytold the victim, a resident ofMahavir Nagar in Kandivali (W),that the renovation work that wasgoing on in her flat was illegal.According to Kandivali Policesources, the complainant wasrenovating her house last monthand the accused, identified asAvinash Gaikwad and SatishTambat, approached her claimingto be the BMC officials. Theyallegedly told her that therenovation work was not givenpermission by the BMC andclaimed that she was violating therules. The police arrested Gaikwadwhile his accomplice Tambat isabsconding. The duo alsoallegedly threatened to penaliseher and later agreed to 'settle' thematter if she had paid them Rs15,000, to which the womancomplied.A few days later, when sheinquired at the BMC ward office,she learnt that no such employeeswere given the power to penaliseunauthorised renovation andrealised that she had been duped.- Staff Reporter

A 28-year-old daily wagerended up spending over fouryears in jail in a case of stalk-ing a 12-year-old girl after heabsconded while on bail andwas not granted bail again.The youth was accused ofwinking, passing lewd com-ments and following the mi-nor a couple of times.The Govandi resident hadbeen arrested the same daythe complaint was lodged inMarch 2017 by the child’smother. Though he had beenreleased on bail ten monthslater in January 2018, the ac-cused had landed up again in

prison as he had stopped at-tending the court. When hedid not attend the court, ithad issued a non-bailablewarrant against him. Theman was then arrested andproduced before the courtfour months after being re-leased on bail. Since then, hehad been in custody.On Tuesday, a special courtdesignated under the Protec-tion of Children from SexualOffences Act (POCSO) con-victed him, but imposed asentence that he would un-dergo only the period he hadalready undergone in jail. Itimposed a fine of Rs 1,000 onhim in default of which, hewould have to spend another

three days in jail.The victim, the daughter ofa vegetable vendor, had comecrying towards her motherand told her that when shehad gone to buy milk, a manhad winked at her, offeredher Rs 100 and told her tocome with him. She gotfrightened and fled. Her par-ents then went in search ofthe youth.The victim pointed him outto them while he was havingan ice cream at a nearby mar-ket. Her father had thencaught hold of him andslapped him. A mob beat himtoo, before taking him to thepolice station where the re-port was lodged.
