The seals in the Wadden Sea
The experience was based on the methods that the Fisheries Museum uses to monitor the population of the seals in the Wadden Sea. First we counted the number of seals on photographs taken by biologists, then we made a little study on the diving behaviour of the seals of the Wadden Sea taking notes of it.
FIRST ACTIVITY: COUNTING SEALS
TELL ABOUT THE PROCEDURE COUNTING THE SEALS AND WHAT DIFFICULTIES YOU FOUND, HOW DID YOUR RESULT COME OUT?
THIS EXOERIENCE CONSISTED IN COUNTING SEALS IN 14 PICTURES THAT WERE TAKEN IN DIFFERENT PLACES ON BEACH. IN DOING IT WE FOUND MANY DIFFICULTIES, FOR EXAMPLE SEALS COULD BE CONFUSED WITH ROCKS OR BIRDS, BESIDES SOME SEALS WERE REPEATED IN MORE THAN A PHOTO.
DESPITE THIS OUR RESULTS WERE QUITE GOOD AND MANY OF US CAME VERY CLOSE TO THE EXACT RESULT.
Second activity: the behaviour study
Compare the studies of the seals in the two different days
Comparing the results obtained the two days we noticed that there were some differences in the behaviour of the two seals, Rasmine and Leo. The second day both the seals passed in average more time under water and less time over the water.
