The SeaHawk scoop 2020 Vol 3 ISSUE 3– Summer
Quarterly Activities President’s Message
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I can safely say that in my 22+ years of experience in higher education,
I have never experienced such unprecedented times as the one we are
currently experiencing. This said, I am proud of each and every single
one of you for having adapted fairly quickly to the changes and shift to
an online environment. It has not been easy, but together we were able
to respond effectively and swiftly. I look forward to seeing you on cam-
pus very soon. In the meantime I encourage your participation on the
various events happening “around campus” such as the trainings, sem-
inars and student services events.

Thank you! David Christian For taking on the task of being on the Front Lines
during Covid-19 Pandemic Nursing is and has been one of the most respected professions for many years now. It wasn’t anything I ever saw myself doing. Now that I’m here it feels like second nature. Nursing school is about discipline, order, protocols and the like. At my first shift huddle on the floor, it was nothing like that. Entire floors being closed, elec-tive surgeries cancelled, nurses being shifted around everywhere, and PPE protocols. The next shift, an entire floor was reopened for Covid– 19 patients. PPE protocols had changed it seemed overnight as CDC had changed their best practice. My quick take on nursing during this time is take eve-rything you learned in nursing school and add flexibil-ity to your skills. The only constant in life is change, and the quicker you are to adapt, the better off you’ll be.
Dr. Sandy, founder of NAVUnite, an organization that addresses issues related to violence against nurses was the guest speaker for Keiser University, Clearwater nursing students and faculty. She addressed specifically the lack of educational resources regarding the opioid epidemic and adequate mental health education. Dr. Sandy shared valuable information about prevention and de-escalation in violent situations in the clinical setting.
#Clearwater KU Campus President Fabian Fernandez with SVA President Mitch Landis, SGA President Octavius Cooper & Director of Student Services, Karen Bisco were honored to present a donation of $1,090 to Cindi Crisci, Senior Community Development Manager at the #AmericanCancerSociety. The funds were raised in part by #SGA and #SVA fundraising events.

Clearwater Student Got Talent…
“My name is Cynthia Gallardo, and I am the new
Surgical Technology instructor at Keiser University
in Clearwater. I graduated from Virginia College in
2015 with a degree in Surgical Technology. Since
then I have gone onto to specializing in a variety of
surgical specialties, such as, but not limited to,
Robotics, Hepatobiliary, Plastics, Bariatric, Urolo-
gy, and Renal Transplant. I discovered my love of
teaching during my time doing volunteer work to
help educate the public of the importance of Organ
Donation, and while precepting within the OR.
Some of my hobbies include traveling,
photography, and painting/sketching. I am excited
to have the opportunity to extend my knowledge
and love of Surgical Technology in to the classroom
setting."
We are growing...meet some of the new staff at
Keiser University, Clearwater!
“ Hello, everyone! I am Avanti Johnson-Lescott,
the newest addition to the Keiser Clearwater finan-
cial aid team! I've been with the KU family since
Jan 2019, recently transferred from the Lakeland
campus to Clearwater. I have worked in financial
aid for the last ten years, relocating to the Tampa
area about 8 years ago. I'm an avid sports fan and
dedicated Gator alumni. Keeping my fingers
crossed that football season is still on, as my two
sons and I try to attend as many games as possible
throughout the season!”
