Minute with the Mayor June 2016

The lazy days of summer are fast approaching. As summer begins it is also a time for the Town

employees to catch up on some projects. Hopefully you find some time to escape for some rest and

relaxation.

We are happy to have Janayea Benko hired this year as our summer student. Part of her job will be cutting

and weed whipping grass in the community. She will also work with our regular employees completing

many other jobs. On behalf of the community we would like to welcome Janayea to her new summer job!

If you see her out and about don’t forget to say hi!

The Annual Community Day celebration has come and gone for another year! The organization

committee would like to thank all those involved in the annual event. Though the weather did not

cooperate we appreciate community members coming out to watch the parade and support the various

groups doing things on Saturday. We had only about 6 vendors so up this year but 18 were registered. The

weather definitely kept many away. The committee would like to thank all those groups and individuals

putting floats in the parade. The rain held off and it was a great kick off to the day. Plans are underway for

next year! If you want to get involved on the committee please let the Town Office know.

Let’s talk about SPEED BUMPS! The Town has decided to place three speed bumps on streets.

There was one installed on the North end of 2nd Street East and another will be placed at the north end of

1st Street East and one on 3rd avenue West. The speed bumps were installed on 2nd Street East because of

excess speed of vehicles leaving and coming into Town. This is an area of high concern as so many

children cross this street to and from school. With the installation of the speed bump on 2nd the traffic

diverted to 1st Street East and has created the same situation on that street. In the new area of the

community there are many young families and children playing. Council feels it is important to also reduce

the potential for speed issues on this street. Are speed bumps the ideal solution…. NO! But if drivers

observed the rules of the road Town Council would not have had to place speed bumps on the three

streets. It may be an annoyance, but the safety of children comes first and foremost!

As some people may know there are some changes coming to the organization of the Lashburn

Town and Rural Fire Department. The Town of Lashburn and the RM of Wilton have entered into an

agreement to create the new Legacy Regional Fire Service. The new fire service will include a new Fire

Chief hired by the Legacy Fire Protection Service. The long term goal is to include other communities in the

Legacy Fire Department. It is a new opportunity to create a fire service with increased Rescue Service,

more training opportunities and in the future the creation of a Regional Emergency Measures Co-ordinator.

The Town of Lashburn, RM of Wilton and in the Interim Fire Chief met with the Lashburn Fire Department in

May to discuss the new Legacy Fire Protection Services. There will be more details about the new Legacy

Fire Protection Service as the stakeholders involved outline the new structure. On behalf of the Town, I

would like to thank Corey Bedford and Garth Rokosh for their dedication and service as our Town Fire Chief

and Deputy Fire Chief. They have provided strong leadership, training for the members and worked hard at

helping create a very active fire protection service. Thank you Corey and Garth!

Remember, if you have any questions or issue you would like addressed in the July Minute with the

Mayor, please do not hesitate to email your questions to [email protected].

Thank you

Steven Turnbull

Communities in Bloom Update

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out to our

planting evenings in May. We were able to complete all the

planting in one evening. Great job and thanks for the help.

The CIB held its Annual Perennial Sale during Community

Days on June 11th. The Committee would like to thank

community members for donating items for sale and people

for supporting the sale. We raised a little bit of money that will

be used for future purchases.

The Committee is also selling tickets as our summer

fundraiser. Tickets are available for purchase from CIB

Members and at various locations in Town. We hope you take

some time to buy a ticket and support CIB. You could win a

wall mount fountain or a bird bath. Thanks in advance for

buying tickets. Good Luck!

CIB would also like to thank the Lashburn Kinnettes for their

donation to the Committee. Your donation is appreciated, and

it demonstrates your continued support of various community

organizations. Thank you!

Also, now that planting has been completed and the

plants are starting to grow…… the weeds also feel the need to

grow. As you are walking around the various areas please stop

and pull a few weeds. This will help in keeping the weeds

under control. The Committee would like to thank the many

individuals who are already lending a hand and weeding for

us. Together we can continue to make the areas look beautiful!

Remember if you would like to volunteer and become more

involved please let the Town Office know!

As a Committee we are also encouraging individual

homeowners to tidy and beautify their own yards as the CIB

would like to participate in the judging competition in 2017.

If you are interested in becoming involved in Communities in

Bloom please contact the Town Office or email

[email protected].

Please get involved and help make our community beautiful.
