Dear Scarab Club Member,

Those of you who didn't attend the Antal Dorati beam-sign-ing on May 2 probably haven't heard what a success it was!Around 90 attended the dinner and were thoroughly charmed bythe Maestro and his remarks. He said, "The great thing aboutpainting is that you don't have to listen to it, and the greatthing about music is that you don't have to look at it."

For the occasion we produced the enclosed brochure whichgives a brief history of the beams and their signing. Alsoenclosed is an article from the November 1928 issue of theScarab Bulletin describing Paul Honore's mural over the fire-place. We thought that our members would enjoy this historicinformation about the Scarab Club.

Fraternally

June Luncheon FunThe Birthday Luncheon for June honored Russ Ingham and

Steve Fisher, both 30 year members of the club. Ken Lockwoodand Vic Goloyugo toasted Russ and Steve, but referred to themas "Freshmen" Scarabs.

Delphine and Jerry Iwankowski celebrated their 25th Wed-ding Anniversary at the lunch, with Jerry picking up the tabfor Delphine as his big surprise gift. :

Ingham also celebrated the 23rd anniversary of his 39thbirthday, with everybody toasting him in the usual S-.carab Clubmanner. Russ wears a "Beeper" at all times, but won't tell any-one how to get in touch with him through it. He has an unlistednumber, but wears the beeper for a touch of class.

The luncheon guests signed a birthday card for Floyd Hyatt, who could not be there. Life Member Hyatt, the BUZZ adds sin-cere wishes for a happy and healthy year!

President's report for his term of office, May 1979 thru May '80

My term began without a club manager or Arts Committee Chair-person, and with a predominately new Board of Directors. However,I was fortunate in having several good people consent to acceptchairmanships of committees and major exhibitions and functionsfor the 1979-80 program year. These chairpeople and their workwill be touched upon throughout this report.

By September the diligent search committee had produced a newManaging Director, Brian Smith, and we were ready to resume fulloperations. Pat Bramley, Social Chair, and friends produced anenormous success with the first annual President's Party. 197Scarabs and their friends attended the gala Greek-theme partywhere bouzoukis played^ ouzo flowed, and Greek food abounded. Theparty was a hit, and something like it will be repeated this Sept-ember. Not only did we raise hell, we raised over $1200 for theclub.

This function was followed by the 36th Annual WatercolorExhibition in October. The show was cnaired by George Howell andhis committee. 145 people entered 245 pieces for judging, and 55pieces were selected and hung. Entry fees, commission on onesold painting, less expenses produced a net profit of $245. Onceagain the show drew huge crowds of people, both at the openingreception and consistently during the show's two week duration.Among the prise winners were Scarab Bill Borden (1st Place), JeanWetzler (2nd Place), and Honorable Mentions went to Phyllis Rey-nolds and Jim Taliana.

Then came the Annual Auction, chaired by Don Hugerich andpresided over by Warfield Rock. 178 people attended and bid on147 pieces of donated art, consignment work (from the V.'atercolorShow), and small sculptures purchased to "tease" the bidding. The net result of all that work was a profit of $4,081. Onceagain the generosity of the members made this auction feasibleand profitable.

Also in October, new Scarab and studio occupant Aris Kout-roulis opened a one-man show in the gallery. His contemporaryworks drew many art patrons, students, and others who saw hisrecent works on paper. Some of these works were later shown atCranbrook and at two shows in New York City.

Right on the heels of these activities came the 19th Annu-al Michigan Photographic Exhibition in November; a gigantic showwith 164 people entering over 300 works for the critical eyes ofthe judges. The reception alone drew hundreds of people and in-dividuals and groups viewing the show during its two week hang-ing numbered in the thousands. Chairman Dick Shirk and committeeproduced a great exhibition which netted $608. Scarab StudentMember John Stant took a medal in the show, and Jim Taliana hadphotos selected for hanging.

On November 15 the club hosted a beam-signing dinner honor-ing Henry Booth for his humanitarian work in our community andhis interest and involvement with the growth and expansion ofthe Cranbrook Institutions. 51 people paid tribute to him andhis unique signature joins hundreds of others that add value

and prestige to our clubhouse. In addition to being a warm andrewarding aesthetic experience, this function raised $206 for theclub. Our thanks to Bill Dickens for working so hard and makingthis a success.

December saw Noel Night in the Cultural Center, the ScarabClub's 66th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition, the annual ChristmasParty, and Christinas itself. Noel Night was fun, and allowed anumber of Scarabs an opportunity to show their works to the crowd, and in some cases, even an opportunity to sell some works. Wegave cider to the masses, and in all, netted 81 £. Good cheer andthe season caused us to see the event as a success. The Gold Med-al Show, chaired by Francine Kachman, drew 54 entries, and gaveBill Bostick his third Gold Medal. The club netted $149. It wasa lovely show with very high quality work showing the caliber ofart that Scarabs can produce.

During the Gold Medal Exhibition came the Annual ChristmasParty, a beautiful and successful Pat Bramley Production that al-most broke even. 14 "no-shows" caused the club to lose over $83•74 Scarabs had a wonderful evening and rang out the old year inhigh style.

In January we rented the gallery for a retrospective show ofwork by the late Ingrid Rogoff. Also in January we hosted thefirst of a series of chamber concerts by Amici Musicae, a well-known group in this area. Both events were well attended and add-ed a new dimension to our programming in the arts.

In late January we began accepting work for the enormous Ad-vertising Art Exhibition which was chaired by Mike Lisnek and acommittee of Scarabs. The show opened with a special previewcocktail party on February 9 and a semi-public reception on Feb-ruary 10. Both events were well attended and brought additionalprestige to the club. The show itself, revived after an absenceof 22 years, attracted 263 entrants who submitted works in graphicdesign, lettering, illustration and retouching. 246 works werehung and the exhibition* netted the club a- record $1498. Thousandsof people saw this collection of outstanding commercial art, andthe show became a valuable teaching tool for dozens of teacherswho brought their students to the club to learn, firsthand, whatthe real world of commercial art is all about. In addition, jobprospects and commissions were gained through this enormous show.

100 works by 10 Michigan photographers were shown in thegallery in March. This small show drew people and was funded byproceeds from the successful Fall Photo Show memtioned earlier.Jim Taliana was one of the 10 photographers featured. March wasalso time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, which we did with thetraditional corned beef and cabbage and green things. About 30dubious Irishmen put on their green and sang "Mother Macree" to-gether. 'Twas a lovely sight and sound! harch was also enrichedby another "Evening in the Arts" with musical photo paintings byRichard Vernick. 72 people came.to enjoy this beautiful programof exquisite photographs, beautiful music, and good cheese, wineand friendship. Dick donated his time and talent, and the club

gained $223. Our thanks to Jim Taliana, who organized the eve-ning.

April was Silver Medal month once again and the club mount-ed an interesting show under Jim Taliana's chairmanship. 279paintings and 32 pieces of sculpture were submitted and when thedust settled the judges had selected 40 paintings and 9 sculp-tures as Michigan's best for 19̂ 0. Prize winners included teach-ers, students, professional artists, but unfortunately, no Scarabs. However, 8 Scarab paintings made the show, quite a good percent-age, with only 29 painters represented. The gain to the ScarabClub from this exhibition was $9̂ 4.

In May we hosted ̂ another beam signing, this time featuringthe distinguished international conductor Antal Dorati. Bill Bos-tick and committee worked hard to make this a memorable event, and92 people paid tribute to Maestro Dorati. The club gained goodpublicity and exposure to people who had never had the opportunityto visit us before. Dorati kindly donated one of his originalpaintings to the club which we will keep in our collection. Eventhough this event was not meant to be a fund-raiser, we nettedabout $100 on the party.

Finally, in the All-Membership Show opening June 15, we hopeto bring out the Scarab's best work, as we want to attract a verylarge audience to the show. Rod Jacob is chairing this event.

Interspersed throughout the year were the highly successful"Mini-Shows" in the lounge. These exhibits, planned and super-vised by Steve Veresh, are for the display and sale of member'sworks only. There is no cost to the exhibitor, and the clubtakes a modest 25$ commission on sales. Since October the loungehas featured shows by Edgar Yaeger, Bill Bostick, Jan Bojanowski,Karl Larsen, Shirley Hathaway, Bill Mullaly, Joe Maniscalco, GilTreweek, Pat Bramley, and Margaret Wilson. A fair amount of workhas been sold over the past months and many people have had anopportunity to see Scarab art. Pat Bramley's show got a wonder-ful Frank Angelo write-up in the Free Press which also includedsome nice comments on the club and our functions and gained alittle glamour for the club. Steve reports that the popularityof the shows has caused the lounge to be booked for much of thecoming year. Another Arts Promotion Project has been to featurework by appropriate new members in the small dining room. Thisfledgeling program is a great idea and we hope it will becomemore important this coming year.

Birthday lunches each month have attracted a goodly numberof both new and familiar faces. Under the leadership of GeorgeHowell and Pat Bramley we have been attracting an average of 40people each time to these festive occasions. In addition tohonoring old-time members, the birthday specials are wonderfulways for new members to get involved in club functions and meettheir new friends. Of course we'll continue these luncheons nextyear. If you haven't been to one, make the effort come Septem-ber.

Page 6: THE SCARAB BUZZscarabclub.org/archives/files/original/12/Scarab-Buzz_1980_04.pdf · dubious Irishmen put on their green and sang "Mother Macree" to-gether. 'Twas a lovely sight and

President's Report, continued.

The entire food service picture has been most interestingover the past year. From September through May we have served1303 regular lunches in the small dining room. In addition, special meals (breakfasts, lunches and dinners) have been servedto 2612 people for a total of 4415 meals. That's a lot of foodand a lot of people. It seems to indicate that the time hascome to take a look at our food service operation and assess itsrole in the club and the cost of maintaining this service. Morewill be reported on this later when the new food service commit-tee is established.

Membership numbers have remained disappointingly stable dur-ing the year. We gained 34 new members and lost just about thatmany. Despite a'membership drive under the chairmanship of TedZberanowsky, we haven't grown to the size we should be to operatecomfortably in the black. With a new brochure in the works de-signed to interest people in the club, we hope to really go afternew members this coming year. The brochure will help us tell theScarab Club story, but it is only an aid. Membership is every-one's business. You've got to help us to increase our numbers sothat we can carry out the exciting programs and activities we'veplanned.

We are doing better financially than in the recent past, but we've GOT to do better! We are facing some rather large ex-penses very soon which will tax our meager resources. We musthave a new roof on the building, point the bricks, and do someelectrical work which can't wait too long. During the past yearthe Board of Directors appointed Bill Dickens as the club's ar-chitect and assigned him the task of studying the premises tomake recommendations on restoration and remodeling to better uti-lize our space and restore our unique good looks. Bill is nowworking on plans which promise exciting challenges to all of usas we must think of ways to raise money and involve many peoplein our future. Needless to say we have our work cut out for usin the immediate future. If you want to help, please let meknow. We need all the ideas and hands we can get.

The House Committee under Chairman Mike Caudle grappled withseveral problems which resulted in our having more or less predict-able hot water, a working shower for third floor tenants, a backdoor that allows easy and safe exiting, a cleaner clubhouse, andplans for a more useable alarm system and improved lighting.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the members ofthe past Board of Directors: Patricia Bramley, Edna Branch, BillDickens, Michael Caudle, Francine Kachman, Warfield Rock, ErnestScenes, Patricia Sullivan, James Taliana, Robert VanderKloot, andTed Zberanowsky. To my officers; Vice President Steve Veresh,Treasurer Richard Vernick and Secretary Eugene Ignasiak, I extendmy special thanks. And last, but not least, to our Managing Di-rector, Brian Smith, who has helped and guided the club immenselyduring my administration.

I look forward to working with the new Board you have chosenfor the coming year, and now wish only briefly to tell you aboutthe things I would like to see us accomplish this coming year:

6

Page 7: THE SCARAB BUZZscarabclub.org/archives/files/original/12/Scarab-Buzz_1980_04.pdf · dubious Irishmen put on their green and sang "Mother Macree" to-gether. 'Twas a lovely sight and

President's Report, continued.

In addition to the exhibitions hosted last year I wouldlike to add a new commercial photographers exhibition, aprinters and engravers exhibition, and a show featuring worksby Michigan art students. In addition, I would like to presentanother Beaux Arts Ball commemorating the historical designa-tion of the Scarab Club. This event would give us community-wide exposure and would be intended as a kick-off for renova-tion fund raising. Also I would like to see us restructure ourmembership categories to try to broaden our base and allow forlarger and smaller dues categories (for example the notion ofpatrons on the one end, and small contributors on the other). We expect to give serious thought to this in the coming months.

Many of you are untapped resources. We cannot continue toseek leadership and productivity from the same few people. Wemust find ways to make others contributors, because we must con-tinue to depend on volunteer labor. We are fortunate in havinga new Managing Director who understands the club and has thecapabilities to help us achieve new degrees of greatness. To-gether, I know we can increase in size, programs, and prestige.I thank you for your support during the past year, and I lookforward to serving you for another year, and look again to youfor your kind and generous help.

Respectfully submitted,

President

VanderKloot Poetry CornerBob VanderKloot composed the following poem, echoing the

thoughts of many Scarabs, regardless of their age as expressedin years:

They say I ain't the man I used to be,Can't run or jump at all the way I did,I've got an achin* back and gimpy knee,If auctioned off, I wouldn't get a bid.

I used to do the hundred with the best,Did acrobatics, feats of strength untold,But if today I walk a bit, then rest,It doesn't-have to mean I'm getting old.

Tho' there be men quite full of vim and vigor,Who've reached the age of eighty five or more,Please don't deride a man whose portly figger,At sixty, barely lets him through the door.

I ain't the man I used to be, becuzTo tell the truth, perhaps I never was.

Pat Bramley and Dick Beeman were Birthday Scarabs alongwith Karl, and they heard their "Happy Birthday to You" inEnglish, while Karl's song was in Danish (I think).

Past President Mike Church sent the Great Dane a tele-gram of congratulations which luckily arrived at the height ofthe party. Karl's friend Hans Nielsen raised one of the manytoasts with the words "The only way to stay alive is by get-ting old".

Karl promised his Scarab family that he intends tolive to be 100 years old, if only to take advantage of his newdues-free membership. Let's hope that's one promise he cankeep!

PORTRAIT GENIUS - Something about a portrait by the ScarabClub's Joe Maniscalco haunts me every time I see one. He paintsmodern-day portraits in the manner of the great European mastersof the form. His recent show at the Center for Creative Studieswas originally set to close March 31 » but proved so popular itwas extended for two weeks. I highly recommend you take a lookat Maniscalco's Michigan portraits. Joe's portrait of hockeylegend Gordie Howe is the single best painting or picture I'veseen of Gordie.

I counted seven babes-in-arms in the tiny photo, and itseems to me that there are a dozen or more teen-agers, allsmiling for the camera. A handsome group with the Wilson hap-py outlook on life.

St. John's Hospital. She's been donating her time and hertalent to that institution for 35 years, which must be somekind of record.

Record or not, Lydia was recently honored by St. John's,with a luncheon and a "35 Year Badge" for her uniform. Theceremony was handled by Mort Grim, local TV personality. Wejoin with all your Scarab friends in saying, "Congratulations,Lydia!"

BRAMLEY PETAL POINT POPULARMarge Wilson and Pat Bramley had a two-person show in

the club lounge last month. Marge exhibited paintings, andPat showed her petal point creations.

The show was well received, and Frank Angelo devoted afull column to it in the Detroit Free Press. With publicitylike that, the exhibit couldn't fail to be a success.

Actress Alexis Smith, in town with a play at the Fisher, came to the club and bought 4 of Pat's petal points. Shedisplayed great artistic sense in her choices, picking onealready earmarked for the BUZZ editor's constant companion,Liz.

Pat has promised to replace that overly popular creation,so everyone is happy, especially Alexis Smith. A word ofcaution to future purchasers: Put a "sold" sticker on the itembefore leaving the club.
