Unit 383 is the American Contract Bridge League’s organization for all ACBL members in the Santa Fe area. During 2020, we will have Board meetings the second Thursday morning of every month except June and August; if you’d like to attend, please let one of the Board members know. The Board members are Maggie Auld, Pat Brantley, Tom Carr, Ken Hirshon, Sandy Lemon, Sanya Schick and Charlie Wilkins. Unit 383 is part of ACBL’s District 17, which covers Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of four other states. District 17 publishes two email newsletters: the Scorecard (D17 Scorecard) is published in even-numbered months, and the Bridge Buzz (Bridge Buzz) is published in odd-numbered months. These newsletters provide information on upcoming tournaments. In order to receive these, make sure you have given the ACBL your correct email address, and make sure that you have added [email protected] to your list of permitted email contacts.

Unit 383 News

From Charlie Wilkins, President

ACBL Unit 383 Board of Directors Please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 12 which will be the annual Awards Game. We will briefly honor everyone who won the most masterpoints in their bracket during 2019, and we will honor those who made Life Master during 2019. The awards ceremony will start at 12:30; please bring a dessert and be there at 12:30 to help congratulate the awardees. We’ve now updated the Unit 383 Life Master plaque at the Leonard Helman Bridge Center, to add the names of the four members who made Life Master in 2019: Andy Cornett, Paul Lazarus, Gary Lowenthal and Helen Newton. Congratulations to them! If anyone sees any corrections that are needed to the plaque, please let any Unit Board member know. Thanks to all Unit members who attended the Albuquerque regional January 20-26. The Unit’s top masterpoint winners for the regional were:

• Bill Harker 113.49 • Donna Sirubi 75.83 • Richard Leonardon 75.83 • Kay Enfield 67.87 • Dennis Dawson 43.80

• Charlie Wilkins 43.80 • Ken Harris 40.10 • Richard McCombs 39.33 • Bill Heid 31.54

One of my quirks is that I like playing 4-3 fits. Here’s a hand from the regional that I hope you’ll enjoy. This hand came up in the second session of a four-session knockout team event. I had (2nd seat, favorable): xxx AQ87 AQ Q8xx. My RHO opened 2S, and I elected to pass (I thought this hand was about one HCP weaker than normal for a takeout double of 2S, and there were two additional flaws – three cards in RHO’s spade suit, and only two diamonds). I completed the pass in tempo (while I was sorting my cards, I thought about whether I would make a takeout double of one spade, so it didn’t take me long to evaluate when RHO actually opened two spades). LHO passed, my partner (Dennis Dawson) doubled, and my call of four hearts ended the auction. The opening lead was Ace of spades: Dummy: x Kxx Kxxxx ATxx Declarer: xxx AQ87 AQ Q8xx LHO continued spades at trick two, and I ruffed in dummy. Now diamond to the Ace, ruff another spade, King of trumps, diamond to Queen, and Ace-Queen of trumps, getting the bad news that LHO still held the master trump (the Jack). So my primary chance (trumps 3-3) hadn’t worked out, but I still had chances: club to dummy’s Ace, King of diamonds. If diamonds split, I could play winning diamonds and discard clubs from my hand, making ten tricks whether or not LHO ruffs one of my diamond winners. But another chance paid off when my right hand opponent discarded on the King of diamonds, because now I could ruff a diamond with my losing trump while LHO had to follow. Four trumps in my hand, two ruffs in dummy, three diamonds and Ace of clubs = ten tricks. This 24-HCP game was not bid at the other table, so our team won 11 IMPs. Best wishes for a great month of bridge in February!

Santa Fe Bridge Center News (Leonard Helman Bridge Center)

From Carolyn Anderson, President

Santa Fe Bridge Center Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Bridge Club is announcing the transition to

“Compostable” supplies and thanks Sharon Nanez for her dedication to this project. We will be

phasing out the recyclable and non-recyclables over the next few months. In the meantime,

please take the time to place only plastic cups and soda cans in the white receptacle. There is

a taller container for everything else. Thank you.

The BOD is very happy to welcome Dennis Dawson as a new member of the Board. Dennis brings

a wealth of experience and we are grateful he will be sharing his wisdom with us.

I/N* Tip of the Month from Kathy Adelsheim

HAND EVALUATION The next few installments I’m going to share parts of an article by Adam Parrish which I find very helpful. Remember the game is about taking tricks - not counting points. It is important to factor in high cards, shape, type of honor, location of the honors and spot cards. There are several systems for evaluating your hand. The most common 4-3-2-1 is simple to remember but it overvalues queens and jacks and undervalues Aces and spot cards. Aces and Kings (aka controls) are better than queens and jacks. A hand with aces and kings can be upgraded whereas one with queens and jacks can be downgraded.

Honors in combination are more valuable than honors alone. For example, holding ♠️AK is

worth 2 tricks while holding ♠️Ax and ♥️Kx is one sure trick and one maybe trick.

Honors are more valuable if they are in your long suits. Picture:

Ex.1 ♠️AKQ43 and ♣️432

Ex. 2 ♠️65432 and ♣️AKQ

Example 2 is usually 3 tricks only while in example 1 the 2 small spades will most likely be promoted so you are holding at least 4 and probably 5 tricks.

*Intermediate/Newcomers (I/N) players is generally defined by ACBL as players with less than 500 masterpoints and includes a spectrum of playing skills from novice to intermediate/advanced.

Planning the Play of the Hand I

This class will be taught from 9:30-11:30 on three successive Saturdays: February

8, 15, and 22. The instructor is James Joy, a sapphire life master with over four

thousand points. Each week there will be 18-20 hands. You will know the bidding,

the opening lead and you will see the dummy. Your task will be to find the best

line of play. After you have made up your mind, we will discuss the best line of

play … and why.

Topics include: using dummy’s trumps for ruffing, setting up a long suit in dummy,

basic odds, clues from the bidding and the opening lead, simple squeezes, dummy

reversals, trump coups, combining chances, deceptive plays, endplays, counting,

setting up a quick pitch, cross-ruffing, keeping the dangerous opponent off lead,

and safety plays.

The cost for all three classes is $60 or, if you can’t make all three classes, $25 per

class. Please let me know if you are planning to take this class so I can prepare the

appropriate number of materials. Email me at: [email protected] . The

minimum number of participants is 12.

This class is designed for intermediate or advanced players. It is not suited for

beginners.

The Play at Trick One

Don’t Touch That Card!

With Dennis Dawson,

National Champion

Santa Fe Bridge Club Wednesday, March 11, 2020

9:30 – 11:30

You cannot become a good player by memorizing a lot of rules. You must learn how to think at the table. Dennis will show you how to do this at trick one, the single most important trick for the declarer. Learn what to think about before playing from the dummy, not after when it is often too late. Practice what you’ve learned by playing several hands. Dennis will discuss each one after you’ve played it. You will be able to tackle even the most difficult hands with more confidence.

Notes are included. You don’t need a partner.

Details soon on how to make a reservation and payment.
