Co-leader needed for Soup Kitchen Team 5 After years of dedication to the Soup Kitchen, Kim and Scott are stepping back from their involvement to focus their efforts elsewhere. We are grateful for the time they have given us, and the commitment they continue to give to outreach efforts at Saint George’s. And so we have an opening for leadership of Team 5! Team 5’s volunteers are made up of a cheerful and experienced group from Bedford Baptist Church. We would like to have at least one, ideally two, parishioners from St George’s with the team to oversee the work of the soup kitchen during Team 5’s visits, and to be the liaison for the Parish Office. Team leaders arrive at 2pm to start the coffee and tea urns, and oversee preparations when volunteers arrive at 3pm, then report to the Parish Office after service is completed. Teams are scheduled to serve one Saturday every six weeks. If you’d like to have more information about what is involved, or to visit the soup kitchen sometime soon, please get in touch with Elisabeth in the Parish Office.

The Lessons appointed for the Daily Offices for this week are found on pages xx and xxi of the Book of Common Prayer.

World Day of Prayer The Halifax Chapter of the Women’s Interchurch Council of Canada will hold their 2014 World Day of Prayer Service at 2:00pm on Friday, March 7, 2014 (storm date will be March 14) at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 2096 Windsor Street, Halifax.

The service this year has been written by the women of the World Day of Prayer Committee of Egypt with the theme “Streams in the Desert”. Our guest speaker will be Reverend Kimberlynn McNabb, Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Halifax.

Please join us and invite your friends and family to attend as we join our fellow Christians in more than 170 countries around the world and 2,000 communities across Canada who will gather on the World Day of Prayer to pray and act in solidarity with the people of Egypt.

A reception will follow the service. All are Welcome.

Epiphany Study: Faith, Hope and Poetry This is the season of Epiphany, the time in our church year when we focus on the mystery of God’s self-manifestation – on the Good News that “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

But what is “truth”, and how can we possibly know it? Is it accessible to reasoning alone? Or does imagination – and the arts that stimulate and give expression to imagination, such as poetry – have an essential role to play, without which our thinking becomes imbalanced and misses the mark?

This study group will seek answers by examining poems that span the history of English poetry, as they are opened up for us by the brilliantly insightful Anglican theologian, poet and musician, Malcolm Guite, in his book, Faith, Hope and Poetry.

This study is not just for lovers of poetry! It is also for those who have never been attracted to poetry because they find it intimidating, puzzling, or simply irrelevant.

We meet on Thursdays at 7:30 pm at the home of Barbara and Stan Armstrong, 1607 Edward Street, Halifax.

If you would like to participate, please contact them at [email protected], and they will email you some introductory pages to read beforehand.

Further thoughts on the readings for Candlemas Each year, at this season, we keep the festival of the Purification of St Mary, the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, sometimes called Candlemas. ... On Candlemas, we celebrate St. Mary’s presentation of the infant Christ in the Temple at Jerusalem, according to the ceremonies prescribed in ancient Jewish Law. Jesus is hailed by the aged Simeon as the light of all the world: “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel”.

The Holy Mother Mary, who is the symbol of the church presents the infant Christ, the eternal Word of God, in the temples of our souls. Those temples are to be sanctuaries of his presence, the altars of offering and sacrifice, “in spirit and in truth”. Here in this holy Sacrament, Christ, the Word of God, is presented in the temples of our souls. The seed of God’s word is planted there: in honest and good hearts. May we keep that word, cherish and cultivate that word, and “bring forth fruit with patience”.

As a hymn for the Feast of the Purification puts it:

O Light of all the world / thy children wait for thee; Come to thy temples here / that we, from sin set free, Before thy Father’s face / may all presented be.

- Fr Robert Crouse, from a sermon for Sexagesima

St Bernard, in the 12th century, writes: “We go in procession, two by two carrying candles in our hands, which are lighted…at a fire first blessed in the church by a Bishop. They that go out first return last; and in the way we sing, ‘Great is the glory of the Lord.’ We go two by two in commendation of charity and a social life; for so our Saviour sent out His disciples. We carry lights in our hands; first, to signify that our light should shine before men; secondly, this we do this day especially in memory of the Wise Virgins (of whom this blessed Virgin is the chief) that went to meet their Lord with their lamps lit and burning…Because our works should be all done in the holy fire of charity, therefore the candles are lit with holy fire. They that go out first return last, to teach humility, ‘in honour preferring one another.’ Because God loveth a cheerful giver, therefore we sing in the way. The procession itself is to teach us that we should not stand idle in the way of life, but ‘go from strength to strength,’ not looking back to that which is behind, but reaching forward to that which is before.”
