RE: June Jeffers KB0WEQ Memorial Radio Room

I wanted to thank the folks in Kansas for honoring June with the provision of a Memorial

Radio Room in her memory. It is entirely appropriate and a tremendous gesture that will

ensure her memory and the ongoing work of Kansas SATERN.

I considered myself a good friend of June’s. She exemplified that spirit that so motivates

others to jump on board and get the job done. Her efforts led the way in the development of

MOKAN SATERN and it stands now as one of the finest SATERN teams in the entire world,

if not the finest. A few years ago at Dayton, she gave a great description of the building of the

Kansas SATERN team. It was dynamic to realize how effectively the team was melded together

to work with Salvation Army EDS and how everyone worked to get the job done.

She was fearless and courageous in everything she did. She refused defeat and inspired all of

us. The last time I talked to her, she was equally courageous in facing Eternity. Her witness

for God was dynamic and I imagine that she is helping with tasks in Heaven now!

It is heartwarming that you are honoring her in this way and it reminds me of the great spirit

in Kansas regarding all that you do in disaster response. I am proud to have hailed from

Kansas and equally proud of the work that you folks have aggregately accomplished for the

good of those suffering from the impact of disaster.

God bless you and your endeavor for the Kingdom of God.

Major Mark addressed the ARES /SATERN meeting participants on the importance of

amateur radio, SATERN, to The Salvation Army to over 30 radio volunteers in

attendance.

Sedgwick County EC Established Monthly Training Session in Wichita, Kansas

District 5 Training Sessions

Roger Bailer, N6ZOP, the Sedgwick County EC has established monthly training sessions for Wichita and the

surrounding areas. His goal is to consolidate and standardize the widely varying experiences and skills of the

individual SATERN volunteers within his areas of responsibility.

The first session was held the evening of April 11th

in the TSA City Command building in Wichita. Roger Bailey

introduced himself and had everyone in attendance introduce themselves. Roger than began the training with a

presentation on the capability of the radio room in support of a local disaster. He also mentioned that he had

been searching for a portable repeater for deployment in or out of the local area. His last item for discussion was

whether or not new badges would be issued in the near future. He then turned the floor over to guest speaker

Henry Monton, W0IE, Assistant Division Coordinator.

Since there were several visitors and support-level SATERN volunteers in attendance, Henry confirmed the

requirements to be a division-level SATERN volunteer. He also reviewed the most recent SATERN deployments

by local SATERN volunteers and some lessons learned during each deployment. Finally he discussed future

deployments and what communications resources are currently available and what is projected for the near-term.

Henry closed his presentation with a briefing on the need for reporting volunteer hours with some examples of

what could be reported. Henry then turned the meeting back to Roger who scheduled the next meeting for the

evening of May 9th

.

The second session was held the evening of May 9th

. Roger began the session by passing around an attendance

roster. He then presented information on APRS and the various configurations and systems available. After a

few Q&A s by the attendees, he closed his portion of the meeting and asked Henry Monton, W0IE to make his

presentation.

Henry answered a few SATERN membership questions/comments and began the discussion on equipment and

personal checklists necessary for deployment. A handout was provided on the subject and each item was

discussed and questions were answered. The attendees were challenged to take the checklists home and to

perform an inventory of what they can gather up quickly, in case of deployment, to be able to sustain themselves

for 1 day and/or 3 days. Henry closed his presentation asking everyone to look around the room and decide

could we support a Joplin (6/8) canteens or a Greensburg (1/2) type deployment for up to 2 weeks. He finally

closed with “When did you last try to recruit someone into SATERN?” He suggested they bring the subject up at

club meetings and during online nets, where practical. Henry then returned the meeting back to Roger who set

the next session for the evening of June 13th
