The Sadducees Question Jesus

Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40• The Sadducees denied there was a

resurrection• Moses wrote about laws of marriage

when death occurs to a husband• The Sadducees posed a difficult situation

and question to Jesus• What if: there were 7 brothers and the

1st took a wife and died without children• In like manner, the 6 left no children and

died and last of all the woman died also

The Question: In the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all 7 had her as a wifeJesus answered, ”You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God”Marriage will not be needed in heavenMoses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raisedGod is not the God of the dead but the livingSadducees silenced

Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.

Page 5: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. (Mark 12:18-27)

A Scribe Questions Jesus

Mark 12:28-34; Matt. 22:34-40• A scribe or lawyer - one that is learned

or skilled in the Law of Moses• The scribe, tempting or trying Jesus

asked, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?”

• Jesus answered: put God first in heart, soul & mind

• Jesus continued further: the second is liken unto it, you shall love thy neighbor as thy self

Page 8: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

A Scribe Questions Jesus

Mark 12:28-34; Matt. 22:34-40• Note Jesus didn’t say it was the greatest

but the 1st(foremost) great commandment and the 2nd was like the 1st

• Jesus summed up the entire Law of Commandments with these 2 precepts

• Consider: the first 4 Commandments deal with our attitude toward God; the other 6 deal with our relationships to our fellow man

• Question: – Did the scribe change his intentions?

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel;

Mark 12:28-34;

Page 11: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Page 12: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. (Mark 12:28-34)

Jesus Poses A QuestionMark 12: 35-37; Matt. 22: 41-46; Luke 20:

41-44• Jesus asked the Pharisees, “ What do you

think of the Christ? Whose Son is He?”• Jesus asked a fair question but couldn’t

be explained without exposing their opposition to Him

• Jesus quoted Psalm 110:1 where David reveals Christ to be his Lord

• The Pharisees denied the divinity of Christ• The argument of Jesus - how could David

recognize Jesus as His Lord if He was only his son

Page 14: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Jesus Poses A QuestionMark 12: 35-37; Matt. 22: 41-46; Luke 20:

41-44And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. (Mark 12:35-37)

Page 15: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Woe To The Scribes & Pharisees

Mark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47• Jesus had answered the Pharisees, the

Sadducees, and the Herodians • Jesus delivered a scathing

condemnation to them• His disciples were present in the temple

to learn about the attitude of these people

• Jesus exposed their hypocrisies:1. They do all their works to make show2. They love the chief seats in the synagogues3. They love to have men call them rabbi

Page 16: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Woe To The Scribes & Pharisees

Mark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47

Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." (Mark 12:38-40)

Page 17: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Woe To The Scribes & Pharisees

Mark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47

Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Page 18: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.' But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.

Page 19: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

Page 20: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.' Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

Page 21: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.' Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.

Page 22: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

Page 23: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Page 24: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' "Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt. Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?

Page 25: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Page 26: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' " (Matthew 23:1-39)

Woe To The Scribes & Pharisees Mark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47

• Jesus spoke directly to the scribes and Pharisees

• Eight times in Matthew 23 Jesus pronounced woe upon the scribes and Pharisees

• The word woe means grief or dismay and is intended to mean great calamity is in store

• These woes are meant to show the inconsistency and hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees

• Matthew 23:37-39 show that Jesus had compassion for his people even though they rejected Him

Page 28: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

The Widow’s MiteMark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4

• Jesus watched those who were contributing to the treasury

• There were 13 chests shaped like trumpets in which religious and benevolent contributions were placed

• Jesus saw the rich put a lot of money in the chests

He also saw the poor widow put in 2 mites (small copper coins) worth about 1 cent

Page 29: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

The Widow’s MiteMark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." (Mark 12:41-44)

Lessons1. The value of gift is not determined by

its amount2. The importance is the spirit in which

it is given3. The rich gave out of their abundance4. The widow gave out of her generosity5. We should not give grudgingly or out

of necessity6. God loves a cheerful giver

Two Views On Matthew 24• The Topic is ALL About The Coming of the

Lord in Judgment On Jerusalem– The Language of Apocalyptic Judgment Used

in God’s previous judgments on Israel, Assyria, Egypt, and Babylon is used here

• Matthew ADDS a topic of the Lord’s Second Coming To The Discussion of the Fall of Jerusalem– Mark and Luke did not include it– This discussion of the Second Coming starts

after Matt.24:34

The Anguish of Jesus

• He would rather gather and protect his people – Matt.23:37a

• But, Israel has not been willing – 23:37b

• Jesus will have to leave the “house” (the temple) DESOLATE – 23:38-39– This statement leads the disciples to ask

WHEN this will happen and what SIGNS would lead up to this event

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Matthew 23:37)

See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' " (Matthew 23:38-39)

Page 34: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Matthew 24And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Page 35: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Page 36: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

Page 37: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

Page 38: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

Page 39: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

Page 40: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Page 41: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Page 42: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Page 43: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Page 44: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

Page 45: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:1-51)

The Impact of Temple Destruction

• Would END the Age of Judaism– The Priestly system would be lost– The Place for Jewish worship would be lost– The Political and Religious POWER of the

Jewish leaders would be destroyed– The blood of righteous prophets they

murdered would be “avenged”

• Jesus Would Be Seen (Perceived) As The Power Directing The Salvation of His Saints and The Destruction of Judaism’s Center

Page 47: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

47

The Temple Destruction Discussed

• The Prophecy – “Not one stone will be left upon another” – Matt.24:1-3

• The Inquiry of when – vs.3• The Signs of Times Leading Up To This

Climactic Event– A time of Apostasy – with false prophets and

false messiahs – 4,5,11– A time of anarchy and wars – 6-8– A time of apathy regarding devotion – 12-13– A time of affliction and persecution – 9-10– A time of accomplishment of spreading the

gospel - 14

Page 48: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

48

Other Signs Preceding The Climactic Fall of

Jerusalem• Desecrating the temple with sacrilegious

objects – prophesied in Daniel (9:27; 11:31; 12:11)– Matt. 24:15-26– The elect will be informed to flee to the

mountains (believing Jesus would pay off)– Christians could escape before the Roman army

sealed off all exit routes (See Lk.21:20)– Unbelieving Jews would remain and suffer the

siege and destruction• These will seem to be the darkest of days - 29

Page 49: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

49

Apocalyptic Language• The darkening of the Sun, Moon, and Stars• The Riding or Coming on the Clouds• These are figurative, dramatic expressions of

the Lord’s coming in a judgment of destruction against a city or country– It does not refer to the complete end of the

world in this context (though it severely ends the Jewish world as they knew it then)

– Similar language was used by Isaiah about Babylon’s fall – Isaiah 13

– Similar language is used by Ezekiel regarding the fall of Egypt – Ezekiel 32• These ended their world as they knew it,

but was not an end to the whole world

Page 50: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

50

This Generation

• All the language up to verse 34 of Matthew 24 is about the coming of the Lord in judgment on Jerusalem– That very generation would see it allThe final fall of Jerusalem took place in AD 70

Three Judgment Parables Matt.25

Ten Virgins Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

Page 54: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

Page 55: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. (Matthew 25:1-13)

Three Judgment Parables• The Talents – 25:14-30

–God has given us charge of abilities we must use wisely and productively

– It is “wicked” and “lazy” not to think of productive ways to use our talents.

–We will give an account of ourselves to the Master

–Will He say “Well done”?, or “You wicked and lazy servant”?

Three Judgment Parables Matt.25

The Talents "For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey.

Page 58: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord's money.

Page 59: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. "So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.' His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'

Page 60: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.' His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'

Page 61: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.' "But his lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.

Page 62: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 'For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' (Matthew 25:14-30)

Three Judgment Parables• The Sheep and The Goats – 25:31-46

– In the judgment a separation of two kinds of people will occur

–The blessed ones are those who have spent themselves in loving service and helpfulness to God and others

–The cursed ones had been too self-centered to notice the needs of the less fortunate

–Eternity in heaven or hell is marked out by our own daily decisions

Three Judgment Parables Matt.25

The Sheep and The Goats "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

Page 65: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.'

Page 66: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'

Page 67: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

"Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.'

Page 68: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:31-46)

Jesus Again Predicts His Crucifixion

• It would happen in two days at the Passover feast – Mark 14:1-2; Matt.26:1-5; Luke 22:1-2

• The Jewish Sanhedrin was busy plotting how they could take Jesus and kill Him

• It is almost certainly Tuesday or Wednesday evening when Judas made his deal with the Jews

Jesus Again Predicts His Crucifixion

Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, "You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him. But they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people." (Matthew 26:1-5)

How Much Was Jesus Worth?

• Judas strikes a bargain – Mark 14:10-11; Matt. 26:14-16; Luke 22:3-6

• Judas would lead the Jewish mob to Jesus for 30 pieces of silver

How Much Was Jesus Worth?

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.(Matthew 26:14-16)

Page 73: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Passover Preparation

• Jesus showed Himself in charge of the Passover right down to where the disciples would find a man with pitcher of water to ask for a room

• Mark 14:12-16; Matt.26:17-19; Luke 22:7-13

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they killed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare, that You may eat the Passover?" And He sent out two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. Wherever he goes in, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?" ' Then he will show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready for us." So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover. (Mark 14:12-16)

The Last Supper• Strife Among the Apostles

–Who would be greatest? – Mk.14:17; Matt.26:20; Lk.22:14-16; Jno.13:1-17

– Jesus washes their feet–Greatness is in serving, not in

being the one served

Page 75: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

Page 76: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?" Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean."

Page 77: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (John 13:1-17)

Warnings to the Disciples

• Jesus must LEAVE – John 13:31-33• The disciples must LOVE each other –

13:34-35• Peter must LEARN he was not as

committed as he thought -36-38

So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. (John 13:31-33)

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35)

Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward." Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake." Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times. (John 13:36-38)

Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?" Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. (John 15:27)

"These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. "And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. (John 16:1-4)

"But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. (John 16:5-15)

The Confusion about not seeing Him again -16-18

"A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father." Then some of His disciples said among themselves, "What is this that He says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?" They said therefore, "What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is saying." (John 16:16-18)

Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, "Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'? Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. (John 16:19-22)

"These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father." (John 16:23-28)

His disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God." Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:29-33)

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. (John 17:1-5)

Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. "I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.

Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.

I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. (John 17:6-19)

O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus tells Peter, James and John to stay here and watch with me. Jesus goes further into the garden and prays, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless let it not be as I want but as you want.”Twice He returns to find Peter, James and John asleep. The third time He returns He tells them to get up and go because the one who betrays me is near.

Page 113: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."

Page 114: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. Then He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand." (Mark 14:32-42)

And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely." As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, "Rabbi, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

Page 117: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." Then they all forsook Him and fled. Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him, and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked. (Mark 14:43-52)

• Annas, the previous high, questions Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching

• Jesus responds; I have spoken openly to the world and have said nothing in secret.

• Ask those who heard what I said.• Then one of the officers struck Jesus

with his open hand for answering the high priest in such a way.

Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. (John 18:12-14)

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said." And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?" Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?" (John 18:19-23)

Jesus, still bound, was sent to the house of Annas, the high priest, where the Sanhedrin

was gathered. The Sanhedrin consisted of about 70 Jewish

men, high priest, scribes, and the elders. The council’s meeting at night for trial was

illegal.Many false witnesses with conflicting

testimonies were brought to testify against Jesus

• Finally two men said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.’”

• Caiaphas asked Jesus, Do you have nothing to say? But Jesus made no reply.

• Caiaphas pressed Jesus: “I put you under oath to the living God to tell us the truth: are you the Christ, the Son of God?”

• Jesus answered, “I am, and the time will come when you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power (God), and coming with clouds of heaven.

And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and with him were assembled all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. (Mark 14:53)Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree. (Mark 14:55-56)

Page 123: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.' " And the high priest arose and said to Him, "Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?"

Page 124: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think?"

Page 125: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

They answered and said, "He is deserving of death." Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?" (Matthew 26:59-68)

(Mark 14:54)Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus of Nazareth." But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are saying."

And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed. And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, "This is one of them." But he denied it again. And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, "Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it." Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this Man of whom you speak!" A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And when he thought about it, he wept. (Mark 14:66-72)

Jesus is taken before the Sanhedrin for a second timeTwice they asked Jesus, “Are you the Son of God.”Jesus answers, “I am.”The council declares, we have no further need of testimony, we have heard from his own mouth what he says.Note: This farce of a second trial was an effort to make the action they had already taken legal.

As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, "If You are the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will by no means believe. And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God." Then they all said, "Are You then the Son of God?" So He said to them, "You rightly say that I am." And they said, "What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth." (Luke 22:66-71)

And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. Jesus Brought to Pilate Mk.15:1-5; Mt. 27:2,11-14; Lk.23:1-7; Jn.18:28-38

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Then Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered and said to him, "It is as you say." And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing. Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, "Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!" But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. (Mark 15:1-5)

Page 136: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no fault in this Man." But they were the more fierce, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place." When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. (Luke 23:4-7)

John 18:34-38 Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."

Page 138: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all. (John 18:34-38)

Jesus Before Herod AntipasLuke 23:6-12

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words, but He answered him nothing.

And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other. (Luke 23:6-12)

Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.

But Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. Pilate answered and said to them again, "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" So they cried out again, "Crucify Him!" Then Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, "Crucify Him!" (Mark 15:6-14)

Jesus Is ScourgedMt 27:27-31; John 19:1-3

So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. (John 19:1)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. (Matthew 27:27-31)

Mark 15:12-15; John 19:4-16Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him." Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!" Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him."

The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God." Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?" Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."

From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar." When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. (Mark 15:20-23)

And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!' Then they will begin 'TO SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, "FALL ON US!" AND TO THE HILLS, "COVER US!" ' For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?" There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. (Luke 23:27-32)

So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS." And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, "Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross!" Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, "He saved others; Himself He cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him. (Mark 15:24-32)

But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." The burial of Jesus’ body in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea

Mark 15:42-46, Matt. 27:57-60,Luke 23:50-54, John 19:31-42

Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Page 174: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. (Mark 15:42-46)

Page 175: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

John 19:31-42 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

Page 176: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "NOT ONE OF HIS BONES SHALL BE BROKEN." And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."

Page 177: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

Page 178: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby. (John 19:31-42)

Luke 23:55-56

And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid. (Mark 15:47)On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, "Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise.' Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead.' So the last deception will be worse than the first." Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how." So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard. (Matthew 27:62-66)

Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?" But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large.

Page 184: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples--and Peter--that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you." So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. (Mark 16:2-8)

about the empty tombJohn 20:2-10, Luke 24:12

Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him."

Page 187: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.

Page 188: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. (John 20:2-10)

But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."

Page 192: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, "Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher).

Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.' " Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her. (John 20:11-18)

Page 196: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened. (Luke 24:9-12)

The guards report to the Jewish rulers

Matt. 28:11-15Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, "Tell them, 'His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.' And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will appease him and make you secure." So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. (Matthew 28:11-15)

Page 201: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?"

Page 202: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?" And He said to them, "What things?" So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.

Page 203: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see."

Page 204: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.

Page 205: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them. Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" (Luke 24:13-32)

and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

Page 221: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

Page 222: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.

Page 223: The Sadducees Question Jesus Mark 12:18-27; Matt. 22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40

Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. (John 21:1-14)

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every

where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

(Mk16:19-20)

And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.. (Luke 24:50-53)

And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. (Acts 1:9-12)
