The last few years have been sheer hell for Barbara Galbraith, and whether or not she is merely a victim of bad luck, some poor decisions and hard economic times or guilty of criminal charges that have been alleged by the local humane society is a matter the courts will decide. "Answer me this: it's our whole family and this has been our lives forever; ask me how this could have happened to us?" Galbraith said. "Because I can't answer that. I really can't answer that. That has been the worst part. How did this happen?" The answer, at least a part of it, isn't that hard to find. From a financial standpoint, everything went wrong at once. The Galbraiths' Rodney Farms was once a showcase operation in New York State and one of the biggest breeders in the state. The Galbraith name certainly helped the brand as Clint trained and drove Niatross, to some the greatest pacer ever. But the Galbraiths seemed to take on more than they could handle in terms of the number of horses they had and the responsibilities of running a big farm, responsibilities that are that more daunting when considering Barbara is 65 and Clint 76. There was a failed business partnership Clint had with Arnold Rothschild and the struggles that all breeders went through around the time of the 2008 economic meltdown. With their income having all but dried up other than Social Security checks and with some 83 horses under their care at Rodney Farms the operation collapsed under the financial strains and the mismanagement. They had no money to take care of basic repairs at the farm, which is located in Scottsville, New York, near Rochester. According to a report in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle there were massive holes in the roof of the main barn, most of the stalls had broken doors and bent bars and only about 30 were usable. Worse yet, it appears that their horses suffered. Investigators with Humane Society of Greater Rochester visited Rodney Farms multiple times in recent years, concerned about the conditions of some of the horses. The situation intensified in early 2013 when the investigators told Barbara Galbraith that the health of some horses needed to improve significantly or else they would be seized. By August, the Humane Society had run out of patience. Barbara Galbraith was arrested for the animal cruelty charge of failing to provide sustenance for her horses. She was arrested a second time and hit with similar charges for the condition of horses she owned that we are at a different property. The misdemeanor animal cruelty charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail. "What precipitated the arrests was that we showed up and there was no potable water for the horses," said Adrienne McHargue, the humane society's director of communications and outreach. "They couldn't get to any water in the pastures." Clint Galbraith was not charged with any wrongdoing. The Humane Society seized seven horses it deemed to be in particularly bad shape. One, an older horse stricken with cancer, was immediately euthanized. After the visit in which the Humane Society warned Galbraith it might take serious action unless she reduced the number of horses on the farm by about half. Of the 40 or so horses that might have been left, McHargue said many were not in great condition but only seven were so bad that the group felt it needed to seize them. Galbraith doesn't hide the fact that she and her husband were going through very difficult financial times, but she is adamant that the condition of the horses was not nearly as dire as the Humane Society has alleged. "The person they sent out, I'm told, was supposed to be an expert in horses because they had taken an eight-hour course on the subject," she said. "My husband and I have been doing this for 50 years and we know better. The Humane Society is a wonderful organization. They do wonderful work. But working with them I can tell you they don't know anything about taking care of horses. They work with cats and dogs." Long-time family friend Nikki Kosciolek has worked at

The Sad, Messy Tale of Barbara and Clint

Galbraith and Rodney Farms

By Bill Finley Barbara Galbraith isn't asking for another Niatross or tohave 100 horses under the care of her and her Hall of Famehusband, Clint. She doesn't want to be rich or famous. Shejust wants to have a few horses, enjoy the sport she lovesand move on with her life. That won't be easy. That has beenthe worst part. How did thishappen?" The answer, at least a part of it, isn't that hard to find. From a financial standpoint, everything went wrong at once. The Galbraiths' Rodney Farms was once a showcaseoperation in New York State and one of the biggest breedersin the state. The Galbraith name certainly helped the brandas Clint trained and drove Niatross, to some the greatestpacer ever. But the Galbraiths seemed to take on more than they couldhandle in terms of the number of horses they had and theresponsibilities of running a big farm, responsibilities that arethat more daunting when considering Barbara is 65 and Clint76. There was a failed business partnership Clint had withArnold Rothschild and the struggles that all breeders wentthrough around the time of the 2008 economic meltdown. According to a reportin the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle there weremassive holes in the roof of the main barn, most of the stallshad broken doors and bent bars and only about 30 wereusable.

Worse yet, it appears that their horses suffered. Investigators with Humane Society of Greater Rochestervisited Rodney Farms multiple times in recent years, concerned about the conditions of some of the horses. Thesituation intensified in early 2013 when the investigatorstold Barbara Galbraith that the health of some horsesneeded to improve significantly or else they would beseized.

By August, the HumaneSociety had run out ofpatience. Barbara Galbraithwas arrested for the animalcruelty charge of failing toprovide sustenance for herhorses. One of the horses seized from Rodney Farms by theHumane Society

Rodney Farms through the good and bad times and says theGalbraiths always had their hearts in the right place. "I can say that Barb did everything she could to take careof the horses but, unfortunately, it wasn't enough," Koscioleksaid. "Did they bite off more than they could chew? Yes.Did they keep horses they shouldn't have? Yes. Were there

problems with their management? Yes. But Barb wouldnever intentionally cause harm to any of the horses. I knowshe would put food in her horse's mouths before her own. That's the kind of person she is." But good intentions don't necessarily matter if horses weremade to suffer. Galbraith may be or may not be guilty of acrime, which is something a pair of judges will decide.Because the alleged offenses happened in different townsthere are two trials, one of which has already been held. Thejudge in that case has yet to make a ruling. The second trialis expected to begin May 14. "I did nothing wrong," Galbraith insists. Yet she says she can't be sure she's going to beexonerated. "I don't think anyone can ever be 100 percent confident ina situation like this," she said. "I know what I feel is thecorrect outcome. I have to wait because I am dealing with anunknown quantity in the judge. If he were a horse person Iwould be vindicated but we're dealing with somebody thatmay or may not be influenced by the fact we are going upagainst the Humane Society. There are a lot of variables." As Galbraith awaits her fate, her old farm has changedhands and is in the beginning stages of what could be arejuvenation. Rodney Farms was sold at a foreclosure saleand, according to Kosciolek, the new owner was preparing totear everything down and use it as a corn field. Kosciolekdidn't want to see that happen and put together a group thatbought the farm from its new owner. She first came toRodney Farms at the age of 7 and took riding lessons fromthe Galbraith's daughter. "I grew up there and spent the last 17 years of my life

Under new ownership, Rodney Farms isnow named Victory Farms and is slowlycoming back to life

Mark MacDonald is going togive the Big M a try

there," she said. "You could say there's soft spot in my heartfor it. I have an emotional attachment to farm." They have changed the name of the farm to Victory Farmsand hope to turn it into a full-service equestrian center whichwill include a standardbred training center and a smallbreeding operation. She says the Galbraiths still live in ahouse on the farm. "I hope Barb and Clint are at least happy to see that there

are still horseshere and that theplace wasn'tturned into a cornfield," she said. Just as RodneyFarms is makinga comeback, albeit under adifferent name,Galbraith hopesthat she and herhusband can do

the same. She says she still maintains a few broodmaresand wouldn't mind starting with them and building back up. "It's not been our job, our profession, it's been our lives,"she said. "We still have a small piece of land, 100 acres orso, and we have a small barn. What I would like to do ishave some broodmares, foal share, sell yearlings. We'venever wanted anything other than to be able to enjoy whatwe've done all our lives." As far as Clint goes, he suffered a serious head injury in abarn accident in May, 2010. He has not driven or trained ahorse since, but Barbara said his health is good and that hehopes to be active later this year. "He's looking forward to starting back and racing them thissummer," she said. "He gets up every morning and is stilldoing what he loves to do." That's one scenario, that the charges are thrown out andthat the Galbraiths get a clean slate and move on with theirlives and careers. The other is that they never recover from what hastranspired, which might even mean jail time for Barbara. TheHumane Society's Adrienne McHargue wonders if Barbara

Galbraith has ever really truly come to grips with what shelet happen to her horses. "I haven't talked to her directly, but my understandingfrom talking to the enforcement officers and other staff isthat she kind of feels like she is the victim and is notultimately taking responsibility for the horses," she said. It won't be long before the rulings will come down fromthe judges and Galbraith learns her fate. Did she dosomething terrible; is she guilty of animal cruelty? Is she awell-meaning person who did the best she could by herhorses when buried under an avalanche of financialtroubles. That's what the courts must decide. Likely, aswith most things, the truth lies somewhere in between.

Mark MacDonald, winner of over 5,000 races will bedriving at The Meadowlands on Friday nights through theend of The Championship Meet. MacDonald is hoping thiswill be a launching point to him becoming a Meadowlands

mainstay going forward. “I want to start drivingthere on Friday nights. It’stough to jump into any placein the middle of a meet, letalone The Meadowlands, but I want to start withFriday’s and I think whenThe Meadowlands opens upagain in the fall I will gothere full time.”

The Meadowlands recently announced a purse increase, but that was not the driving force behind MacDonald’sdecision. “The Meadowlands will give me more exposurecompared to what I am doing now. Matchmaker…fourth Round, Three Divisions

By Frank DruckerPublicity Director, Empire City @ Yonkers Raceway YONKERS, NY: Yonkers Raceway Friday night hosted thefourth round of the Blue Chip Matchmaker for Open Marepacers. Three $40,000 divisions went postward. The first event saw Breeders Crown champ Shelliscape(Tim Tetrick, $7.20) get off the series schneid a handy,down-the-road effort (:27.3, :57, 1:24, 1:52). Winning thedraw, she played “Catch Me If You Can,” and they could not. Ramalama (Matt Kakaley) was unable to sustain a first-upbid, while Monkey On My Wheel (Brian Sears) could matchstrides from the pocket. “Monkey” did get second—beatenthree-quarters of a length—with Ramalama third. Charisma Hanover (Yannick Gingras) and Bettor B Lucky(George Brennan), as the 13-10 favored entry, finishedfourth and sixth (last), respectively. For third choice Shelliscape, a 5-year-old daughter of

Artiscape owned by Bamond Racing and trained by PJ Fraley, it was her first win in four seasonal/series starts. The exacta paid $28, with no triple wagering (five bettinginterests) “She had no luck with the draw the last two weeks, butshe’s a mare with class,” Tetrick said. “It was no fluke shewon the (Breeders) Crown. Tonight, I was able to rate acheap half, then she was strong down the back…27(second) third quarter and 28 (second) home.” As was the case with Shelliscape, defendingMatchmaker champion Feeling You was flying under theradar until this evening. Leaving from post No. 4 with Tyler Buter doing thehonors, Feeling You operated from second-over. That didn’t seem so opportunistic when pole-sittingRocklamation (Gingras)—50 percent of thejust-over-even-money favored entry--rated a cheapy half(:28, :57.3). Also not helping the cause for Feeling You wasAnndrovette (Tetrick), who was first-up and into a vacantpocket when Angel’s Delight (Brennan) gapped it badly. Rocklamation maintained her advantage in and out of a1:25.2 three-quarters, taking a half-length lead into thelane. Feeling You, left to fend for herself, continued herassault on the leader. She outgamed Rocklamation by ahead in 1:53.1, with Anndrovette third, beaten ahalf-length. For fourth choice Feeling You, an Alan

Kirschenbaum-bred 7-year-old daughter of Cambestco-owned by driver, Stephen Oldford & Oldford Farms andtrained by Amber Buter, she returned $32.60 for her firstboard finish in five ’13 tries. The exacta paid $65. “She just felt good,” Buter said of harness racing’s newestmillionairess ($1,014,148). “When Tim (Tetrick, withAnndrovette) dropped into the pocket, I had thought aboutgetting in behind him, but my mare just acted like shewanted to keep going, so I stayed outside. “We took our time getting ready her ready this season. Ayear ago, we brought her back early for a series at theMeadowlands that wound up being cancelled. I just hopeshe can be this good the next couple of weeks.”

The third and finalMatchmaker mélange ofthe evening hadYagonnakissmeornot(Dan Dube, $6) throwdown the gauntlet withthe fastest mile of theseries to date. Leaving from post No.5, “Yagonna” made thefirst lead before yieldingto a fumbly-early 4-5favorite inSomwherovrarainbow

(Sears). After a :27.1 opening quarter-mile and :55.4intermission, it was Krispy Apple (Tetrick) trying her luckfirst-up. That one couldn’t sniff the leader before a 1:23.4,three-quarters, with “Somwher” owning a length-and-a-halflead into the lane. However, she was powerless to denyYagonnakissmeornot, who edged from the pocket and rolledaway. That final margin for the second choice was 2½widening lengths in a season’s-best 1:51.4 Third went to Royal Cee Cee N (Ron Pierce). For Yagonnakissmeornot, a 5-year-old daughter of ThePanderosa co-owned (as Allard Racing) by (trainer) ReneAllard, Yves Sarazin and Kapildeo Singh, she’s now 6-for-10this season (3-for-4 in Matchmaker). The exacta paid$14.60, with the triple returning $74.50. Friday’s $38,000 Open Handicap Trot was won by favoredD W’s NY Yank (Brennan, $4) in 1:54.3…fastest local mile ofthe season. The George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Seriescontinues Saturday night, with three, $50,000 divisions(races 4,5 and 11 on the 12-race card) in that fourth division. The Raceway's five-night-per-week live schedulecontinues, with first post every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,Friday and Saturday at 7:10 PM. Tape It, Mic It Up and Package It: A New Way

to Show Harness Racing

I'm one of those people in modern society that catchesup on work at night. The day is busy, and at timeswasteful, with calls, emails, texts, BBM's (sorry, I do havea Blackberry, which probably dates me) and just abouteverything else. So when our household goes to bed, I tryand get things done. While working, I often like to keep something on in thebackground, and one time not long ago I began to surf thesports channels, looking for a game or event to listen to.Being in Canada, this more than likely involves the sport ofhockey, but this past winter, I found myself glued to the setfor another sport. It was the sport of curling.

Yes, curling, wheremen and women(sometimes overweightor age-challenged) playa form of shuffleboardon ice. Here's whereyou may say, "ah,those crazy Canadians"and if so, I can'tdisagree on some ofthe stereotypes. But if

you keep reading, I promise this will make sense. The thing is, curling has become massively popular ontelevision north of the border. At the nationalchampionships (which I was watching on tape delay), theratings were absolutely astounding. For a regular game -not the final four or the final itself - almost 700,000 peoplewere watching on Canada's "ESPN.” That same evening,717,000 people were watching an NHL hockey gamebetween the Toronto Maple Leafs and the PittsburghPenguins. That's tantamount, in the US, to a Pats-Broncosgame drawing 8 or 9 million viewers on CBS, with ESPN'scoverage of a shuffleboard game directly against it drawing7 million. "It really is a phenomenal story," said TSN presidentStewart Johnson, to the Edmonton Sun. "We now considercurling a pillar property on TSN. It's become a ratingspowerhouse year after year." I bring up curling for a few reasons. Curling is a gamethat no one really knows. It's not mainstream, and it has aMissed an Edition of the HRU?

lot of down time between shots. No one knows who theplayers are; no one has a rooting interest in any of theteams, really. It's a niche sport, whose viewers skew olderand it is a game predicated on some really cool strategy. It'scerebral. It's also grown from a sport that was rarelywatched, to a "powerhouse." What curling has taken advantage of is marketing to itsstrengths. It has not tried to be baseball or football orhockey, because it is not baseball or football or hockey. It'snot fast paced or flashy like a half pipe. It's, well, curling. "The athletes, themselves, likely hold a key. Puttingmicrophones on them has opened up the strategy of thegame, undoubtedly. More than that, it's shown them to bemostly well-tempered, ordinary folk who just happen to bevery, very good at the game they love. They're polite,good-natured and sporting. They all seem like goodneighbours. That's an attractive island in the world of sports, dominated by a sea of ego and brashness," wrote DonLandry on Yahoo Sports. Horse racing, unlike curling, has not transferred itself totelevision well at all. Yes, the Triple Crown's ratings for theThoroughbred's are good because they are a formidablebrand, but the rest of the year it costs the business money tobe on television, not the other way around. If you talk to ahundred people in the sport of racing, they'll tell you it's greatto be on TV, but they are also very perplexed that no oneseems to be watching. It's the elephant in the room and not asoul seems to know what to do about it. Racing wants to sell itself on TV as spine-tinglingexcitement, and that sells well to us as insiders and fans. Italso makes us feel big league and warm and fuzzy to holdlive events. The problem is that the general public does notfeel the same way. They certainly aren't seeing what we'reall seeing. I think there's a simple explanation: live horse racing andthe television audience simply don't mix. I believe that for the sport to move forward on television ithas to change the way it is presented on television. Insteadof showing live events people don't seem to be interested in,don't understand, which doesn't make them want to becomerepeat viewers, racing should try and create something theywill be interested in and understand, and maybe watchagain. I'd "tape it, mic it up and package it." For example: For the Little Brown Jug, harness racing would not worryabout showing it live on a Thursday afternoon, unable toshow the pageantry, betting and the heats that would beconstrained by live racing. Just like NFL Films showsrepeats during the week with mic'd up players and an editedstoryline, or like the Tour de France coverage did for yearson TV with two weeks of racing jammed into a three-hourSaturday program, the same thing is done for the Jug. Along with the live event structure - with a host and guests- the bread and butter would rely on a few changes. Ron Burke, mic'd, talks strategy with Yannick Gingras. Atthe same time, Brian Sears is trying to figure out what to doin the Jug Final with a couple of his buddies who are not

driving in the race. A bettor, mic'd is making his plays, delving into his or her handicapping tool box. For extraexcitement, if there is a betting tournament that day, thatcan be woven in as well. The possibilities are endless, including sound from thehorses and drivers during the race, edited. What you'd have is not a pre-race show about whatmight happen in a horse race from talking heads, a storyabout a feed man who has been working since 1943, or afeature on something tangential - the usual TV stuff thathas not gotten ratings in like forever - you have real life.Real harness racing. And then, they're off... The race, the drivers, the trainers and the people whobet on them are all suddenly a World Series of Pokerpocket cam. The general public gets to watch a raceunfold; the strategy just spoken about by Brian Sears, orRon Burke happens in real time. The bettor who called itwrong and one who called it right are exposed. The actionon the track could be pieced together with sulky or helmetcams, as well. There would be a story to tell, not as a liveevent, but like NFL films does. Post race reaction could be packaged, the telecast wouldshow the prices, analysis or what have you, just like a liverace would. It'd be like a TV show, with a prologue, middleand epilogue that makes eminent sense to any sports fan,in a live event setting. We'd know the show was not a liveevent, but newbies (the people TV is supposed to be tryingto reach) wouldn't. Remember, this does not sacrifice viewing - the peoplewho want to watch a race live still will: On the Internet withSam and the crew, on TVG, or HRTV, or radio or at thetrack itself. I think that would move racing towards a TV sport likecurling, by creating fans of the strategy of the sport andwhat happens behind the scenes. It would not be a sportwith shadowy figures no one knows; it would not be agame dependant only on animals running a race that lasts150.1. It would be based on exactly what horse racing is: Acool game where drivers, bettors, trainers, grooms, handicappers and cold hard bettors do not know theoutcome before the gates unfold, with the TV viewer alongfor the ride. It would do what racing has long wanted: Toteach people the sport while presenting it in a fun way. In the end, changing the way racing is presented ontelevision can allow it to share what it has always wantedto share to a willing and wanting sports audience: Thepublic gets to feel like we feel. That is something - in sixtyyears of live TV production of the sport - that racing hasnever been able to accomplish.

Race 7, B-2/B-1 PaceBLATANTLY BEST couldn't track down a couple oflegitimate A-level foes last week but was strong in both hisprior tries at levels very similar to this. Any type of live coverflow will aid cause; fast enough on paper as anyone else.GREAT VINTAGE is obviously accustomed to facing betterthan these but is making just his first start back for Takterwhile landing the outside; not out of the question but he'slikely to be coming from last. MAJOR BELLE is back withBurke and has a solid history at this track; fellow Meadowsdriver Wilder gets the drive as Morrill was listed here butopted to KEEP GOING instead. COLOSSAL deservesfavortistm off his most recent try and has been knocking onthe doorstep of late against tougher; goes second time Andy.

Race 8, C-2 PaceON THE RADAR hasn't had the easiest go of it in his twostarts following the scratch and I think he's deceptively betterright now than he may look. This one was active last outthrough fast fractions and he's already beaten these typesthis year; very playable for Silva and DM. ATLASALLIANCE seems long overdue to finish on top on of thesenights, but that's how starters from this barn typically look. Ifgiven a clear shot he can threaten; at least seems in line fora share from the rail. SOMEPLACE SPECIAL was one that Iliked last out and is Morrill's pick of a bunch tonight, but thefact is that this one was empty off second over cover lastweek. Tough call now. SHARK ON BOARD is another thatwas given every chance while kindly rated on the front endbefore he faltered; now 0 for 10 on the year.

Race 9, N/W 2MR BIG LOAD went from awesome two back to empty lastweek; an almost inexplicable turnaround. The positive isthat Harris has him right back in so we can possibly assumeeverything should be fine; his best would be good enough. ROCK OUT scored first start off the bench last out for Elliottand has every right to win right back; looks like he'll be inanother good striking position. PIERCE is now 0 for 17 andruns second almost every time; this field doesn't look anyeasier than what he's been up against of late. SWEETROCK raced over this track last year as a two year old inwinning a qualifier; return Q suggests he may need one forRemmen. WICKED BUSINESS is another that faced some

tough foes last year as a freshman; should show moretonight in his second start back.

Race 10, C-2 PaceROCK THE WIND drops to the bottom for Burke and wassecond here five races ago to Shoobee's Place; rates a15/1 morning line despite going for the top barn. YOUBET YOUR GLASS lures Morrill off the top choice whiledropping to the bottom; an obvious short priced contender. Despite a terrible season thus far VOICE OF TRUTH stillretains Callahan tonight which is a bit of a surprise; shouldbe close enough if good enough. ALEX BULLVILLE beatthese alone on guts the last time he was at this level;should be respected despite the outside post. BOBJACKSANGLE A and HRUBYS N LUCK are others that both wonthe last time they dropped to the C-2 level; the lattercomes off an impossible trip in a race won by a horse thatwould crush these. SEEK THE DRAGON was DaveMiller's pick but really should have been much better lastout but with a 12/1programmed line he could be thrown into close out the sequence.

Meadowlands (Race 11): Shebestingin (David Miller) didn’tlook especially strong off the gate, but apparently was justwaiting on the outside for the traffic to settle on the rail. Shemoved effortlessly from 5th coming out of the first turn, to 1st

just past the 1/4 pole (:27.1). Joe Holloway gets another oneunder the belt for the fastest female in the history of harnessracing and has the Fan Hanover (June 14) in the cross hairswith a $400,000 purse for 3 year old pacing fillies.

Woodbine (Race 3): Rock N Roll Xample didn’t disappointthe betting public on Friday evening at Woodbine as theheavily-favoured filly completed the Blossom Seriessweep. After capturing both preliminary legs, Rock N RollXample and Randy Waples scored an open-length victoryto take the rich $36,000 final in 1:53. Waples and the daughter of Rocknroll Hanover-RXample sat in the two-hole for most of the mile as VioletBayama (Sylvain Filion) controlled the pace throughfractions of :26.3, :56 and 1:25.1. As the field of six turned for home, Waples angled hischarge off the pylons and the nine-time winner did the restas she exploded past the tempo-setter en route to victory.Wildcat Magic (Chris Christoforou) came on to finishsecond over Violet Bayama. Trained by Shawn Robinson for owner/breeder RobertHamather, Rock N Roll Xample increased her bankroll to$84,090. She paid $2.40 to win.
