In Perth, the Global Poverty Project's End of Polio Concert on 28 October raised additional funds. The concert coincided with h C l h H d f G M i i P hthe Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth; 

Rotarians had teamed up with the group to encourageRotarians had teamed up with the group to encourage government leaders to put polio eradication on the agendaagenda. 

Following the meeting the governments of Australia CanadaFollowing the meeting, the governments of Australia, Canada, and Nigeria, along with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation  announced a combined pledge of more than US$100 million to p g $support polio eradication efforts.

5. Fighting hunger 

In Romania, a Foundation grant that enables local farmers to buy animal feed, in exchange they agree to donate a portion of their products to children's hospitals schools and orphanagesproducts to children s hospitals, schools, and orphanages. 

4. Reducing child mortality

The Rotary clubs in Sri Lanka and  India, are helping to reduce child mortality by providing p g y y p gimproved sanitation facilities for 15 families in a small community in Sri Lanka

3. Promoting peace and conflict resolution

Rotary in Côte d'Ivoire instilled in Rotary Peace Fellow Kouame Remi Oussou on a passion to resolve conflict.  He subsequently instigated the 2007 peace accordsubsequently instigated the 2007 peace accord. 

2. Basic education and literacy 

Rotarians in South Africa and Rhode Island, USA, in conjunction with the International Reading Association and Operation Upgrade, is teaching adults in the rural community of South Africa and Sudan to read and write.

What is the “Plus” in “Polio Plus”?

‐ distribution of Vitamins & vitamin supplements through polio

“The cold chain”  set up to distribute Polio vaccines in refrigerated conditions is now used supplements through polio 

campaigns 

‐ a huge network of laboratories and health clinics initially charged with 

for many other vaccines

g y gidentifying new cases of polio now monitor the spread of other viruses and are building a legacy of infrastructure and partnerships that will support the fight against infectious disease long after polio is gone
