President Julie Clark called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the meeting. She then called on John Biggs to lead us in the prayer, pledge and the singing of God Bless Ameri-ca. Ben Shivar led the introduction of guests and visiting Rotarians which included Allison Hutchins the assistant to the Cary Town Manager and Daniel Gibson a visiting Rotarian from the Macon Club.
President Julie reminded everyone about Veteran’s Day this week and asked any one that has served to stand. There were a dozen or more that stood to an ovation by club members. Jim Lovejoy was called on to share the CART night at the Cary Theatre and also encouraged those to order a Rotary t-shirt with proceeds going to CART as well. Gary Ashworth reminded us all that Christmas is around the corner and so Bell Ringing season is here. We will be ringing for 11 days and need 75 spots filled. For the last several years we have been the top bell ringing group with over $19m raised last year. Renee Spell reminded us about the upcoming Christmas party that will be held on Dec. 5th at Prestonwood Country Club starting at 6pm. The cost is $20 for members and $36 for any guests. Eric was called on to update the group on the upcoming Chili Dinner which will be held on Jan. 26th. The committee is seeking volunteers and sponsors for the event which will be the 15th annual event with over $366m going to local and international hunger relief efforts. Each member of the club will be asked to sell 10 tickets at $8 each or con-sider doing a table sponsorship or higher. More details will be forthcoming in future weeks.

A representative from Wake Med Hospital will be our featured speaker next week.
Ben Shivar had the pleasure of introducing Sean Stegall, Cary’s new Town Manager.
He shared that he would be discussing how he plans to successfully transform Cary
from a fast-growing to mature community. Sean’s wife Michelle is a professional plan-
ner in Morrisville and Ben shared he is happy Sean is here to share all the problems I
left him with.
Sean took the opportunity to thank Ben and others for being a big part of help setting
him up for success and for the help in transitioning his family into the community. He
shared that Cary is a great place and that most people after introducing themselves
will share when they moved to Cary as there is not that many that grew up here. He
felt that Cary is very unique compared to other areas in that the real growth and devel-
opment of the Town has happened in recent years and that its uncommon to meet the
actual founders of what Cary is today and to have those same people still actively engaged in the community. The
feeling here is much different than his last stop as the economics here are strong whereas he was tasked with trying
to take a lot of risk and resurrect the community. So his task is to keep Cary great and not screw things up. He also
announced that he would be joining the Cary Rotary Club soon which was met with applause from the club members.
He then talked about Imagine Cary which was adopted in January and was the culmination of three years of planning.
It provides a vision for Cary’s future and a goal to stay on all the lists as a great place to work, play and live. He
coined the period of rapid growth as, “the build” years which occurred between 1959 and today. This period saw a lot
of infrastructure development and population growth but yet it was done very well. With limited land for future devel-
opment and millennial buying habits being different than previous generations there is going to be a need for slow
adaptations and higher density quality projects. These redevelopment plans accompanied with the need to replace
infrastructure that was all built about the same time will require the support of the community to reinvest in the next
several years. He gave an example of a house over in Lochmere that was bought in 1993 for about $150,000. Be-
tween then and now that house increased in value to over $300,000 while the
property taxes never changed but yet there has been numerous projects and ex-
pansions that the Town has been able to invest in which has made the value in-
crease. Much of this investment was the result of all the growth in the tax base
but that has slowed due to available land being limited so moving forward it will
be about redevelopment. However, if you have ever tried to develop in Cary you
know that can be difficult and expensive due to the standards and ordinances that
are required. So moving forward it will be important to evaluate those standards,
show flexibility and work together to foster redevelopment while maintaining the
character of the town that caused so many people to move her originally. After
several questions Paul Sausman thanked the Sean for his remarks and Bill Lane
led us out with the Four Way Test.

Member News and Notes Volunteers needed for the “Reality of Money” financial simulation at Green Hope High School on
Friday, December 8, 2017.
The Reality of Money activity gives students a peek into the future as they are "transformed" into adults with jobs, debt, families and other real world responsibilities. There is NO experience needed to be a volunteer. We provide everything you need, and all volunteers are grouped in pairs or trios to work together to help the students. This is a fun way to get
involved and make a difference. Please sign up using the link below.
