Our “Wisdom for the Day” came from Christina Egan. Her wise thoughts related to walking a mile in theshoes of another before criticizing them and its profitability to you: You’re a mile away and you have theirshoes! John McLeod reported on news and shared some humor. The News: Air Force personnel killed by gunman inGermany; Supreme Court decides obnoxious and insensitive political speech constitutionally protected withonly Justice Alito in dissent; Steve Jobs physically present at IPad 2 unveiling; Local 230 Fire Fighters agreeto wage cut and 2 tier retirement package; San Jose Mineta International to cut fees to entice airlines. Thehumor: After being arrested for public inebriation Christina Aguilera passed the verbal test by this timereciting the words to the National Anthem accurately. After sentencing Lindsay Lohan the Judge notice hisgavel went missing.

Red Badgers Taylor Numann and Willie MacDonald introduced themselves and served as holders of thetravelling mics for Rotarians with guests and visiting Rotarians. We had 96 high school juniors attending aspart of the Enterprise Leadership Conference to be conducted this week. The conference is co-sponsored withthe Los Gatos Morning, and the Los Gatos Noon Rotary Clubs.

Larry requested Kay Walker come to the podium to introduce new Rotarian, Jenn Viane Riese (Santa ClaraCounty Fire Safe Council).

Richard Alejandro provided an update to members about Washington School’s association with a school in thePearl River region of China. Students are learning the other’s language and culture. Working with DennisFong and his wife, Polly, local students are learning Mandarin and several will visit China. Richard’s finepresentation was supplement with a Channel 7 news clip about the project. 6 thousand more dollars isneeded to meet the financial needs of the program. Richard had a moving personal reminisce aboutmentoring and the importance of school; and his two year absence after 6th grade from school whiletraveling as a migrant worker from Texas to Minnesota to Florida.

Brian Adams announced the winners in the Club’s picks of Academy Award winners: Jeanne Katsuro and PaulKantor. After several tie-breakers, Paul prevailed and received the Academy Award original poster. Being thegentleman he is, Brian awarded Jeanne a miniature Oscar.

Hank Sprintz encouraged participation in the Job Shadow program extolling the mutual benefits accruing toRotarians and students.

Larry’s announcements:Last week during our Perfect Attendance presentation we did not acknowledge the other 50 members whohave made it a priority to maintain perfect attendance. A round of applause for their efforts was provided bythose delinquent in such exemplary attendance.

Roger Hassler, District President, and Larry did a radio program the other day, and it will be broadcast onKBAY 94.5 this Sunday at 6:00 a.m.

Next week’s speaker is Russ Hancock, President and CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley.

The Speaker for the March 16th meeting is Michael Powell, former FCC chair, who will talk about bringing FCCregulations into the 21st Century.

Vince Sunzeri tied together our speaker with ELC. He noted ELC deals with entrepreneurship and requiresmany: 300 applied, 96 were selected; and 50 Rotarians help over a 3 day period. The subject of today’s talk:

"Entrepreneurship"

Richard Lowenthal has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley and the Chief Technical Officerof Coulomb Technologies, which he co-founded in 2007. He was the CEO of Coulomb from 2007 until 2011.From 1998 until 2007 he was instrumental in starting several companies, including Lightera, Pipal Systemsand Procket Networks. From 1996 to 1997, Mr. Lowenthal was a vice president and general manager atCisco. From 1990 through 1995, Mr. Lowenthal was vice president of research and development forStrataCom, a telecommunications equipment company. Prior to StrataCom, Mr. Lowenthal was co-founderand vice president of engineering for Stardent Computers, and vice president of engineering for ConvergentTechnologies.

Mr. Lowenthal is also a former Mayor of Cupertino, California, and has been heavily involved in the non-profitworld including Rotary. In this current endeavor his company develops software and hardware for stations to distribute electricity toelectric cars; the apparatus for “stations” to run efficiently, effectively. Like all upstarts there are issues ofideas, enthusiasm therefore, financing, and implementation. The idea and its importance struck Lowenthalwhen he visited Tesla Motors, the electric car manufacturer. Without substantial production of such vehiclesfinancing of his adventure was difficult to come by and apparently he supported his project with personalfunds. The current prospect for various models for such vehicles seems robust. His enthusiasm was tied to adesire to free the country from foreign energy dependency and reduce the nation’s carbon footprint.Electricity is cheaper than petrol, although currently (no pun intended) does not provide the ability to travelextended distances without ready provision for refueling. The business of his company is to address this

Page 8: The Rotary Club of Sanclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000003975/en-us/... · "Exploring the San Francisco The Speaker for March 9 Russ Hancock "Joint Venture" Russell Hancock is

deficiency by providing equipment and technology for others to supply to the car the fuel. A salutary aspectof electric energy is that the grid does not sustain much use in the late evening, early morning hoursalthough the grid produces energy 24/7. Of course government has been a large player in the electric vehicleendeavor subsidizing that industry.

Three questions were presented to our speaker. The first related to the issue of production of electricity thatrequires utilization of other energies. The second concerned the efficacy of the current delivery system andthe possibility that inductive delivery was a better method. The third involved battery technology and itsefficiency and safety. The questions while sagacious seemed unresolved for Mr. Lowenthal’s business involvesthat of the middleman.

Rotary Smiles

A group of country friends from the Cottonwood BaptistChurch wanted to get together on a regular basis, socialize, and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare themeal.

When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted tooutdo all the others. Janet decided to have mushroom-smotheredsteak. But mushrooms are expensive. She then told her husband,"No mushrooms. They are too EXPENSIVE."

He said, "Why don't you go down in the pasture and pick some of

Page 9: The Rotary Club of Sanclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000003975/en-us/... · "Exploring the San Francisco The Speaker for March 9 Russ Hancock "Joint Venture" Russell Hancock is

those mushrooms? There are plenty in the creek bed."

She said, "No, some wild mushrooms are poison."

He said, "Well, I see varmints eating them and they're OK." So Janetdecided to give it a try. She picked a bunch, washed, sliced, anddiced them for her smothered steak. Then she went out on the backporch and gave Ol' Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol' Spotate every bite. All morning long, Janet watched Ol' Spot and the wildmushrooms didn't seem to affect him, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success, and Janet even hired a helper ladyfrom town to help her serve. She had on a white apron and a fancylittle cap on her head. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized, and played cards and dominoes. About then, the helperlady from town came in and whispered in Janet's ear.

She said, "Mrs. Williams, Ol' Spot just died."

Janet went into hysterics. After she finally calmed down, she calledthe doctor and told him what had happened.

The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it. I willcall for an ambulance and I will be there as quick as possible. We'llgive everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone's stomach.Everything will be fine. Just keep them calm."

Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming downthe road. The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, anda stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into thebathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach.

After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, "Ithink everything will be fine now." and he left.

They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the living room andabout this time the helper lady came in and said, "You know, the guythat ran over Ol' Spot never even stopped!

The Four Way Test

Over 1.2 million Rotarians can't be wrong! In all the things we say and do . . .

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
