The first half of the year is now behind us and am grateful for all the fun, fellow-ship and service that The ROTARACT/Rotary family has had. The following is an account of what The ROTARACT Club of Nairobi Central was able to do.

Club Service:

Under the able guidance of Director Lucy Wanjau, the committee began the year by putting together the President’s Installation party at The Wildlife Club residence in Mombasa. The event which was the first of its kind was attended by over 200 participants. The committee also facilitated a successful handover ceremony in Nairobi.

The committee ensured that the club has meeting venue at the Laico Regency Hotel and it is always ready for our fel-lowships.

The Club began the year with 28 mem-bers and has since inducted eleven

individuals with one transfer into membership. We hope to have doubled our member-ship before 24th DCA

In celebra-tion of mem-bers the Club

service committee organized first and second quarter birthday celebrations for

members whose birthdates fell within the months and in conjunction with the Bridges Children center held a party for the celebrations.

The club recognized exemplary service and gifted 10 individu-als with return tick-ets to Mom-basa.

We have enjoyed home hospitality in Embu Nyeri, Kiambu, Kinoo and Lang’ata and also with mother Club members; this has developed even deeper friendship and confidence amongst members.

International Service:

Fellowship once celebrated amongst the closest of friends should be extended to others in order to ensure the values that so bind the smaller group goes on to perform a larger function of creating international understanding and peace. Towards this end the ROTARACT Club of Nairobi Central has taken the lead in doing this and extended the arm of friendship to different Clubs and organizations around the world.

The said friendship is designed to create information sharing and project assistance. The Club has since been in communica-tion with the following Clubs in its bid to create lasting global partnership and friendship.

The ROTARACT Club of Belmont; we are partnering with the club on the Sanitary pads distribution project and they have already sent their donation towards supporting the project.

The ROTARACT Club of New Kingston ; The club is enjoying the E pal project with these Rotaractors and they showed interest in supporting the alleviation of hunger which was caused by the draught situation in the country.

The ROTARACT Club of Santa Barbra; the twinning is at its initial stages and we are yet to determine what project we will partner in.

The ROTARACT Club of Beirut; The Club in Beirut wishes to have a cultural exchange with RCNC. Work on the dynamics of the program are being worked upon and it wont be long before we enjoy the fruits of such partnership.

The ROTARACT Club of Kampala Ssesse; The twinning project is being spearheaded by Namanya Reagan, Cornellius and Shiko Mbogo. We have since visited their community service project in Sssesse Island.

ROTARACT Club of USIU; the club happens to be our sibling and we hope to grow stronger together.

The ROTARACT Club of Mella; The ROTARACT club of Mella hosted one of our members Rtr. Tyrus Gichu who initiated twinning and saw that the two clubs became sisters. We look forward to the growth of this partnership.

The ROTARACT Club of Moi Univer-sity (school of Medicine); Who we have partnered with for the sanitary distribu-

tion Project. Distribution to Eldoret Special School is scheduled for 21st January 2011.

The committee is also proud to announce that Monica, one of our active guest is a Rotary ambassa-dorial Scholar now studying at the university of San Diego.

PR and Fundraising;

The objective of this committee is to create awareness about Rotary/ROTARACT and raise funds for the club’s project and activi-ties.

Our target for the year was to raise $ 3,750 for project and Club administration. We had projected production of Wakati Magazine as our sole public relations tool. We later revised the budget to $ 17,645. The amount was to be raised through members contribution and donations from partners.

Our fundraising activi-ties included Club items sale (t-shirt, lapel pins,) Auction, Sergeant at arms, Club activity registra-tion, donations and

grant application. We have managed to raise;

Club members contribution— $1,139

ROTARACT Club of Belmont— $ 952

Jomo Kenyatta Foundation—$ 8,705 (Books value)

DHL Germany—$ 2,824

Chase Bank—$ 1,176

Youth Bank Kenya—$ 1,176

The amount collected have all gone towards pro-jects. We hope to raise the remaining $ 1,673 to

finish up the IDP house project by end of Janu-ary.

Our PR has been up beat with the setting up of social network sites and continuous release of publications to cre-ate awareness about the Club. Our blog boasts of 5,443 hits and we have 539

online members. We released our latest Wakati edition a 20 page magazine and had it circulated to partners and general public.

In the year we have been featured twice on the Standard Newspaper on the IDP house project and the sanitary towel pro-ject.. Voice of America has scheduled a filming of the sanitary distribution in Eldoret on the 21st of January 2012 and Mathare on the 4th of February 2012.

We look forward to getting more coverage and creat-ing more awareness for Rotary and ROTARACT.

Community Service:

RCNC identified three projects for the Rotary Year 2011/12; Sanitary towel distribution, Book drive and IDP house building. The past six months have seen the club implement the sanitary towel project and the book drive.

The sanitary project had its target set to distributing a whole year supply of sanitary products to 1,000 girls. The Community service committee had identified the benefi-ciaries and for the first distribution we dis-tributed to The Jomo Kenyatta School in Embu. 260 girls benefited from this distri-bution which was facilitated by Red Cross Embu and partly funded by The ROTARACT Club of Belmont (Australia).

Since then 26 girls at the Bridges Children centre have received the sanitary towels and 10 from the Jomo Kenyatta foundation. The project has received immense support and the Club has received $1,176 from Chase bank to distribute to 200 girls in Mathare Slums. The Local Administration for Mathare area was present to witness the receipt of the donation. We also received $ 2,824 from DHL to distribute to other beneficiaries. The next distribution is scheduled for Mid January.

The book drive project had a set budget of $8,705. The committee has since through the Fundraising committee raised this amount. Bridges Centre was the first to receive book donation. We also donated to The Hope for The African Child a local NGO. We are set to have distribution of the remainder of the books to beneficiaries. We thank Jomo Ken-yatta Foundation for the book donation they made towards the project.

The committee also en-gaged members in other service project. The Ken-yatta Children Cancer Ward visit, Visit to the

Thogoto Home for the aged, Christmas parties in Mathare and Huruma slums in partnership with Rotary Club Nairobi, and

RCCs in the areas.

The Club in conjunction with the Mount Kenya Initiative planted 1,000 trees to pro-tect the countries water catchment area.

In addition the Club’s project the committee has in its plans support for Mother Club projects. The committee strives to see the projects to conclusion and is upbeat about the progress made so far.

We look forward to support other clubs and organizations in their projects.

Professional Service:

The Professional service committee is charged with Rotaracts No. 1 objective; To develop professional and leadership skill s of members.

The committee has been working tirelessly to make sure the Club speakers for professional talks at fellowships. Members have enjoyed varied topics

being discussed, from Leadership to healthy eating to politics. At the suggestion of members the committee have made sure every meeting there is a speaker.

The speakers range from made business and corpo-rate leaders to professional members who are a afforded a chance to share about their professions.

The committee also en-sured that there is direct mentorship for members by having members in-vited for Mother Club’s committee meetings. This has seen increased skill development as members

have been able to interact with Rotarians directly and receive advice on various topics and concerns.

The height of activity for the committee was the Ethics and Integrity seminar held at USIU where the speakers spoke on the value of Ethics and Integrity in every profession. The talk was attended by over 180 participants. The com-mittee hard work saw the launch of Youth Bank with $ 1,176 donation to go to two groups to develop their busi-ness ideas.

The committee extended membership to members of interact Club in Nairobi School and Kenya high school.

We aim to grow the Youth Bank fund and continue to invite inspiring speakers for development of our members.

Rewarding service and fellowship

Dear Friends,

It has been half a year of activity; fun, fellowship and mostly service. Every single one of the people we interacted with wanted to contribute towards our causes. We might have had disagreements with some but that is the measure of passion in a commitment and the fruits born thereof are evident in the work that has since been accomplished. I wish to congratulate you for taking time to visit with us or tell someone about us or make a financial contribution towards our causes. My proudest moments off course have been when that smile has sprung from a kid or any other beneficiaries and when we have wel-comed strangers with joyful hearts.

With much done, rest still must be kept abreast from us as there continues to be loads more to be done. We are reminded by the DG to bring one to Rotary/ROTARACT, by the RI to focus on sanitation and housing for the vulnerable in our communities, by the nation to promote peace within historically discor-dant groups and more so to develop a strong base of ethics and integrity within us and others around us. The work therefore is well cut out for us and as we look forward to the next six months, my hope is that all our efforts will concentrate on doing good and promoting these values we hold dear.

Have a prosperous New Year!!! Thank you President. Huma Kaoga Kaseu The ROTARACT Club of Nairobi Central 2011/2012
