Hospice at Home Autumn 2011 Newsletter

Petersfield Town Mayor, Mr George Watkinson has

chosen The Rosemary Foundation as the charity he

will support for his year in office.

Barbara and Julie attended a social gathering at The

Festival Hall in Petersfield on the 10 August. Mr

Watkinson thanked town councilors, officials and local

people from commerce and other charitable

organizations for their hard work over the previous

year and hoped that they would support him in his

efforts to raise funds for The Rosemary Foundation in

the coming year.

Julie said “We had a splendid evening and thoroughly

enjoyed the opportunity to meet representatives

from the local community, including some of the

other Petersfield based charities and local churches.

We are thrilled and honoured that

the Mayor has chosen The Rosemary Foundation as

his charity for the year. Building on the extensive

publicity generated by the Petersfield Post, we hope

that most people have now heard of our charity”.

Fund Raising at Liss Junior The year six pupils at Liss Junior School organize an annual Charity Day in the Summer

Term as part of Health and Citizenship Week. Pupils nominate charities to support and

then vote for their favourite.

This time the overwhelming majority chose The Rosemary Foundation,

largely because one pupil was able to explain how the nurses had

helped his father so much during his last days.

The children were completely responsible for the running of stalls and

games and their ideas were most creative. The teachers were

particularly impressed by the mature way in which groups responded

to this challenge and their level of motivation.

The remaining school population enjoyed an extended playtime in

order that they could spend lots of money! As a consequence over

£600 was raised in just over an hour, which represents an all time

record for this activity and shows that the charity is highly valued, not

only by adults but by children as well.

Chairman’s Letter

On behalf of the trustees, welcome to the autumn Newsletter.

You will enjoy reading the various reports, particularly those of the enterprising

fundraisers. Financially the outlook is more positive, much better than had been

foreseen at the end of last year and the nursing staff have continued to deliver an excellent standard of patient

care for which the Rosemary Foundation is renowned.

Our thanks go to all those who have ensured our continued success, our volunteer helpers, our fundraisers and all

our supporters.

The Rosemary Foundation welcomes the establishment of The Rowans Hospice at Home and looks forward to this

service enhancing patient choice for those who wish to remain at home as life draws to a close.

Since 2005, we have been pleased to provide support and shared care for patients at home who have had links

either with The Rowans Hospice or the MacMillan service in Midhurst. Historically The Rowans Hospice has

provided training programmes for our nurses, without charge, and in turn we are now assisting The Rowans to

develop their new service, which will be working in Portsmouth and S.E. Hants, concentrating their efforts where

the need is greatest.

The Rosemary Foundation will continue to provide nursing and bereavement care for all those in our community

who request it.

It is only with on going public support that each of these individual charities can survive and in the current climate

fundraising remains a challenge for both.

You will read in the finance report of our long-term investment fund, set up by the Trustees, on the advice of our

Patron Lord Bessborough. We will seek grants from charitable trusts to build up this fund and so secure income to

provide guaranteed salaries in the future. We hope that when statutory funding becomes available, the

Commissioning teams will look favourably on our competitive service.

Clinical Review

When I wrote for the spring newsletter, I mentioned we were approaching caring

for our 1000th

patient. This actually happened at the beginning of April when a

Petersfield patient was cared for by us, sadly, for only a short time. This week at

our Thursday meeting we added the details of our 1078th

patient!

During the last financial year (I" July- 30th

June) we received 168 new referrals. Sadly 12 cases required visits from us

for only a very short duration (less than 24 hrs) whilst another 36 patients required visits for 3-4 months.

As I write, this week has brought our first taste of winter weather and its difficult driving conditions and traffic chaos.

For instance, last Tuesday saw heavy rain compounded by a large tree falling down and blocking the A272! As a

result this caused a delay of 30 minutes and much manoeuvering of the car around the narrow lanes adjacent to and

around Langrish in order to get to a patient.

Adversities like this happen and become a part of the job: at the start of the day we are heading in one direction,

but events overtake us only to find we are heading elsewhere! We have to be constantly ready to respond to a call

from a patient or carer, this being our prime priority.

This highlights for me just how unpredictable life with The Rosemary Foundation is and in no way boring, but we're

never sure what we may have to do next.

The Kings Theatre Southsea

The Kings is a Grade 2 Listed building which was built in 1907. It was designed by Frank Matcham

who also has to his credit The London Palladium, Blackpool Tower Ballroom and the London

Hippodrome. The Kings always has a charity show to open their new season, and this year, The

Rosemary Foundation was chosen together with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and

the Kings Restoration Fund. A party of Rosemary supporters thoroughly enjoyed an evening of

splendid entertainment.

We are very grateful to the management of the Kings for their on-going support.

The Kings Theatre is now taking bookings for the Pantomime ‘Cinderella’. If you would like tickets

100 Mile Walk

Every year for the last 14 years Tony Maxse from

Selborne has organised a Sponsored Walk in aid of cancer

and Children’s charities, causes very dear to his heart.

Over that period Tony, his support team, and his walkers

have raised over £380,000 for a variety of charities.

This year the Rosemary Foundation was one of three

charities to benefit. Over a week in Spring Tony’s route

took the walkers from Litton in Somerset, through the

Limpley Stoke Valley, past the Wilton Windmill, through

the Candovers to a finish at Selborne – 100 miles in six

days.

Mike Cartmel was one of the walkers raising funds for

the Rosemary Foundation. He wrote ”a really well

organised walk – my first – but definitely not my last. I

was amazed how well Tony Maxse could mobilise so

many people across the South of England. What was

great was the fact we hardly touched major routes –

and often were crossing land closed to the general

public!” Our grateful thanks are due to Tony and his

support team and to Mike and all the walkers.

Life in Petersfield Awards

A packed audience for the annual Life in Petersfield

Awards ceremony applauded The Rosemary

Foundation as the nurses received the Professional

Community Support in Petersfield Award. We also

reached the final three in the category Not for Profit

Organisation/Charity of the Year.

BUPA London Run

We proudly wore our Rosemary Foundation T-shirts (please see picture attached of us looking

knackered) and were really pleased with how much money we raised (which is still coming in) so

hopefully we will get to the magic £700!

Liz and I had lots of supporters there as well to push us home, one of which was our best friend

Claire who lost her Dad last year. Claire always said that the care and support that the Rosemary

Foundation nurses gave her Dad was excellent, which is why we so wanted to run for you, and it

was all very emotional when we crossed the finishing line.

We crossed it in 1 hour 21 minutes - very pleased as I wanted to do it in under an hour and a half.

Didn't quite manage to run the whole distance but ran most of it, and most importantly we

sprinted over the finishing line together! Louise Hider

Tea, Coffee,

Lunch and Walkies!

Our friends in the Horndean WI continue to

raise funds for us as their charity for 2011.

An afternoon tea and sale was very well

attended by many ladies with scarcely a

man in sight, which seemed puzzling until

we realised it was Cup Final afternoon! The

residents of Herne Farm were amongst

other groups to support us with a coffee

morning, our thanks to Ann Lemon, Jeanne

Wiseman and John Phemister, and

Petersfield Ladies Luncheon Club have also

chosen us as their charity of the year.

Organiser Gill Elmer decided to nominate

The Rosemary Foundation as the

beneficiary of the Annual Sponsored Walk

from Liss Forest to Griggs Green and back.

Nearly 50 walkers, many with their dogs,

completed the six mile walk after a

welcome drinks break at the Deer’s Hut.

Our thanks go to everyone who has

organised fundraising events. To list them

would take up most of this Newsletter! We

are so very grateful to you all.

Fundraising set to reach new

heights …....and heat John Dickson is very bravely undertaking a free-fall parachute jump,

hopefully in October on Salisbury Plain; he intends to donate his

sponsorship money to our funds

Ade Oduyemi has begun training to cycle through Death Valley in

California next March and is hoping to raise £10,000 for The

On a warm Saturday in March the

Cubs from Blackmoor and

Whitehill Group did a street

collection in the Forest Centre in

Bordon. Part of their badge work is to help with

community or charity work and as their Leader

Norman Pearce had reason to be grateful to The

Rosemary Foundation in the past, he decided we

were a worthy cause to support.

Quilted with Kindness THE GRAND DRAW for the beautiful quilt, lovingly made by the

Petersfield Craft Club took place on Saturday 2 July at East

Meon Village Hall.

It was a lovely afternoon with a very happy air about it and with

a request to have one again! We shall certainly think about

making a ‘cream teas’ afternoon an annual event so look out for

information in our Spring Newsletter.

Thank you so much for all who attended and bought the raffle

tickets, especially the ones included in our Newsletter which

reaches far and wide.

Football for Cancer ... Ray Ogilvie is the driving force behind Football For Cancer and thanks to his

astonishing fundraising work, £20,000 has been presented to The Rosemary

Foundation. The early stages of the tournament concluded with the finals at Petersfield Town’s Football

Club, followed two weeks later by a match at Fratton Park where the teams consisted of players who had bid

for their places, but also included the highest fundraiser. A memorable afternoon in Portsmouth led to a

visit to Tiger Tiger in Gunwharf Quays for the presentation to be made. Our very grateful thanks go to Ray

and all his team of fundraisers for their tireless work and support.

Cricket On Sunday 26 June, the

hottest day of the year so far, Kingsley

Cricket Club entertained The Rosemary

Foundation to a return match. Family

and friends were treated to a close,

competitive match with the RF

winning, revenge for last year.

Refreshments, bar and BBQ, and the

arrival of a very welcome ice cream

van, plus raffle and stalls raised funds

for us and kept everybody happy.

Fun and Games!

Stoolball Steep Stoolball Club have had a

good year again and have been successful in winning

the Milland Charity Cup. The Ladies have again

decided that they would like The Rosemary

Foundation to receive the money and Elspeth Dixon

and Penny Powell joined them at one of their matches

to receive the cheque.

Financial Review I wrote in the spring newsletter to tell you that we had high hopes for an improvement in our income during the

remainder of our financial year which ends on 30 June.

Well I am pleased to tell you that our hopes were not in vain. The Rosemary Foundation 2011 Campaign launched

by the Petersfield Post in the spring succeeded in raising our profile and this together with legacies and some

significant fundraising activities contributed to a much better end of year result than we feared. From a position of

deficit towards the end of calendar 2010 we ended the financial year in June 2011 with a surplus of approximately

£40,000 on expenditure for the year of about £210,000.

This of course is excellent news and enables us to go forward with our plans to secure the future of the Foundation.

Since we started in 1997, we have been supported wonderfully by many generous friends in our community

through donations great and small and fundraising activities.

However, it’s not a case of saying “Phew, that’s it”. We have to look to the future and the Trustees have decided,

for the sustainability of the Foundation in the years ahead, to grow an investment fund which will eventually yield a

reliable income to contribute significantly to the salaries of our nurses – our most important commitment and also

our largest, just as it should be. The fund has been started with some safe investments (no Icelandic banks!) and

will shortly be added to by some further amounts raised specifically for the purpose and not included in the

£40,000 surplus above. So it is still a case of securing income to grow this fund which we are sure is the responsible

thing to do so we can be certain of continuing to serve the community.

In the last newsletter I mentioned the importance of Gift Aid. Luckily, many more people are aware now of the

benefit to us if they Gift Aid their donations, but I would just like to draw your attention to a couple of points about

Gift Aid.

• The donor must receive no benefit at all from his donation for it to be Gift Aided. Even money

paid for a raffle ticket cannot be Gift Aided for example as the buyer gets the benefit of the

chance of winning a prize.

• Only the person actually giving the donation can Gift Aid it. So, for example, if someone kindly

runs a fundraising event for us, or does a sponsored activity, they cannot themselves Gift Aid

what is raised because it is not their money. The original donors/sponsors have to do the Gift

Aiding.

There are other points to think about if, for example, you were to hold an auction. We will always be very happy to

advise you – just get in touch before the event. Gift Aided donations are worth 25% more!

cash back donation to the Foundation, instantly raising money for us. Just register “The Rosemary Foundation” as

For example, spend £25 with WHSmith on books and 2.5% will be donated. You will have raised £0.63, at no extra

cost to your purchase. Make any purchase from Amazon and 2.5% will be donated. Insure your car with Aviva and

raise £30.00, or purchase a mobile phone from O2 and earn £17.50 and so on.

You can shop with 2000+ brand name retailers and to raise funds you just use the links from the easyfundraising

site first - it's that simple!

If you ALREADY shop online, why not help good causes at no extra cost from purchases you would make anyway.

You don't need to come up with any complex sponsorship ideas to raise funds; you just need to shop online via

easyfundraising.

...and Music!

Local musicians have been singing and playing to raise

funds during recent months. It has been a privilege to

attend concerts by Petersfield Chamber Choir firstly

with a memorable performance of Bach’s St John

Passion in April, followed by an uplifting midsummer

concert in June. The Choir’s Musical Director, Ann

Pinhey, is a wonderful supporter of our charity and has

raised a considerable sum during recent years.

Support has also come from the young musicians of

Churcher’s College. Barbara, Elspeth, Julie, Lindy and

Penny attended a school orchestra rehearsal to collect a

cheque and were treated to a special performance of

Pirates of the Caribbean. Money had been collected at a

lunchtime concert at St Peter’s Church and through a 24

hour Music Marathon. Helen Purchase, Head of

Instrumental Studies said “we wanted to support a

charity, and I could think of none better than our local

Hospice at Home”. Allison Price

Our new Website

We have moved to a new website which we hope you

will find more appealing and which is easier for us to

maintain. While we are in the process of switching

over, our website address of www.rosemary-

foundation.org.uk will still take you to the old website,

but there you will find a link to the new one. The old

website is no longer being maintained. The address of

the new website is:

Because of the way Google and other search engines

work, if you search for “Rosemary Foundation” you

may for a while arrive at the old website but again you

can use the link to access the new one.

Our webmaster, Richard Burton would like to know if

you have any comments about the new website and

hopes to get some emails on the subject sent to

webmaster@rosemary-foundation.org.uk with your

thoughts. If you have any problems, do let us know and

we will do our best to sort them out.

Fundraising Support Network

Lyn Blackman writes:

“I have a vision! I would like to encourage new

volunteers with a flare for fundraising to form some

local groups. To start with, these could be very small,

even just asking friends round for coffee and inviting

donations. This could lead to events such as ‘Tea at

Three or even ‘Wine at Nine’! This will be a new

venture for us and plenty of support is available for

anyone wishing to start up such a group.

National Hospice Care Week takes place from 8th

-14th

October so this could be a great time to launch your

group.

Our current team of volunteers does a tremendous job

but inevitably it is the same people who are always

involved.

If you think that you could take a local group forward

or would like to help out at one of our events do
