The broker, Harvey Maxwell usually
expressionless countenance, gave a mild
interest and surprising look to the pitcher,
Confidential Clerk in the Office when his
employer briskly entered at half past nine in
the company with his young stenographer.
Story by O. HENRY
The young lady had been Maxwell’s stenographer for a
year.
She was beautiful in a way that was decidedly
unstenographic. She looked different from all days, she
wore no chains, bracelets or lockets. Her dress was plain
grey but fitted her figure perfectly. In her neat black
turban hat was the golden-green wing of Macaw.
On this morning she was softly and shyly radiant. Her
eyes were bright and the expression was a happy one.
The office of the broker was full of files, with the phone in
ring, full of work.
Harvey asked pitcher about the new stenographer, who just
came. He asked that why did you call new stenographer.
Pitcher replied, that you only told me yesterday to call the
agency and ask for new stenographer.
So it shows that Harvey forgets the things very quickly and
he works very hard through out the day.
So he sent the new stenographer back and let the
stenographer work here only, as she looked special also.
The workers were partying outside in the lunch break and the
broker was buzy working.
He kept on looking at the stenographer as he looked
something special in her than other days. He saw the pitcher
talking to her.
He thought if he didn’t asked her out day today then, he only
would be sorry for that.
