Mass Intentions

New to our Parish? We welcome you and ask that you please stop into our

Parish office to register. The Lord told Israel to reach out to newcomers and welcome them (Leviticus 19:36).

Tree of Righteousness. Reflection on the Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time:

In the cryptic message of the prophet Ezekiel, long centuries before the Lord’s coming, God gave His people reason to hope. Ezekiel glimpsed a day when the Lord God would place a tree on a mountain in Israel, a tree that would “put forth branches and bear fruit.” Who could have predicted that the tree would be a cross on the hill of Calvary, and that the fruit would be salvation?

Ezekiel foresees salvation coming to “birds of every kind”—thus, not just to the people of Israel, but also to the Gentiles, who will “take wing” through their new life in Christ. God indeed will “lift high the lowly tree,” as He solemnly promises.

Such salvation surpasses humanity’s most ambitious dreams. And so we express our gratitude in the psalm: “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.” It is indeed good, and better still to give thanks with praise. The psalmist speaks of those who are just upon the earth, but looks to God as the source and measure of justice, of righteousness. Like Ezekiel, he evokes the image of a flourishing tree to describe the lives of the just. The image, again, suggests the Cross as the measure of righteousness.

The Cross is a sign of contradiction to those who would rather “flourish” in worldly terms. As St. Paul emphasizes to the Corinthians, we need courage. Our faith makes us strong and it is proved in our deeds. He reminds us that we will be judged by the ways our faith manifests itself in works: “so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.”

God Himself will empower the works He expects from us, though we freely choose to correspond to His grace. In the prophetic oracles, He scattered the seed that sprang up and became the mustard tree, large enough to accommodate all the birds of the sky, just as Ezekiel had seen. He gave this doctrine to His disciples in terms they were able to understand, and He provided a full explanation. In the sacraments He provides still more: the grace of faith and the courage we need to live in the world as children of God. By Dr. Scott Hahn

TODAY’S READINGS:

First Reading — I have lifted high the lowly tree (Ezekiel 17:22-24). Psalm — Lord, it is good to give thanks to you (Psalm 92). Second Reading — Whether we are at home or away, we aspire to please the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-10). Gospel — It is the smallest of all seeds, and becomes the largest of plants (Mark 4:26-34)

As members of St. Gertrude's I invite you to take your time and pray the prayer of St.

Gertrude to the Sacred Heart of Jesus every day.

“I salute thee, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and vivifying source of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, ardent furnace of Divine love; Thou art the place of my repose and my refuge. Enkindle in my heart the fire of that ardent love with which Thine own is all inflamed; pour into my heart the great graces of which Thine is the source, and grant that my heart may be so closely united to Thine, that Thy will may be mine, and that my will may be eternally conformed to Thine, since I desire that henceforth Thy holy will may be the rule of all my desires and all my actions. Amen.”

Preschool news: It was hard to say good bye as the preschool ended for the 2017 – 2018 school year this week. Miss Carmela’s two year old class finished up their Father’s Day gifts. Miss Michelle’s three year old class made beach balls and shaving cream sea animals. Miss Meredith’s threes also finished up Father’s Day gifts and worked on the letter Z. Miss

Gabrielle’s four year old class made Father’s Day gifts and sunglasses. Miss Tina’s fours put together their Alphabet Books and made books about themselves. All the classes had end of year parties in their rooms, while the two four year old classes had their graduation ceremony on Thursday. Deputy Mayor Russo led the Pledge of Allegiance and Father Regan gave a blessing. The children did a marvelous job singing and reciting poems. After the program, a reception was held in the gym. We wish all of our preschool children and their families a happy, healthy and safe summer, until we are together again. Congratulations to our graduates, come back and visit when you can, we will miss you!

Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Today, consider a Dad like James. James saw information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal at his local parish, and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help since he had nowhere else to go. James had been gainfully employed for more than 10 years when he began to fall ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability. After paying the co-pays on his medications, his family's rent and utilities bills, James had very little left to purchase food and other necessities for his family. It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities found him a specialist who assessed the family's needs and directed them to appropriate resources in their community. He went to his Parish Outreach, where his family received food that allowed them to make it through the month. James and his family received the help they so desperately needed. Today, James is back to work and the family is doing well. "I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a situation again," shared James.

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in the lives of others.

Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest by adding the following language: “I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general program of St. Gertrude Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.”

Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable bequest or consider other Estate Planning options, such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a life insurance policy or an IRA account.

To receive a brochure about Wills and Bequests, please call Barbara Kilarjian at 516-379-5210 ext. 229

The IRA Charitable Rollover is back and is now

permanent!

What’s called a rollover is actually a “qualified charitable distribution” that can be made to our Parish.

If…

You are at least 70 1/2 years old on the date you make your gift

Your IRA is a traditional or Roth You don’t exceed your personal maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions You will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way for you to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution". In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. VERY IMPORTANT!! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution. Example: Mrs. Connors, age 76, has $125,000 in a traditional IRA and would like to contribute $5,000 to her Parish in 2016. Upon hearing of the Charitable IRA Rollover opportunity, she directs the custodian of her IRA to transfer this amount not later than December 31, 2016 directly to the Parish as a 2016 gift. She will not be subject to income tax on her $5,000 qualified charitable distribution.
