Situation Ethics

Situation ethics is a system of ethics developed by man. It is nothing really new but it is something that has and can destroy the souls of men. It is sometimes referred to as the “new morality” and it was greatly pro-moted by Joseph Fletcher through his lectures and his book “Situation Ethics.” While their system of ethics has been very attractive to many, even among those in the church, it is not a system of ethics that is in har-mony with the Bible. What then is situation ethics? Very briefly, as Fletcher looks at ethics, he sees three approaches to making ethical decisions: (1) the legalistic, (2) the anti-nomian and (3) the situational. The legalistic approach is to believe that there are a set of “prefabricated rules and regulations” that will provide the answer for every ethical quandary. The antinomian (meaning “against law”) is the denial of any principles, maxims or rules for making ethical decisions. Thus, Fletcher would argue, any decisions made by this approach wile b “random, unpredictable and erratic.” Situationism is the approach that is somewhere between legalism and antinomian-ism. By this approach nothing can be classified as al-ways right or always wrong. The rightness or wrong-ness of any action is to be determined by the specific situation. In each situation love is the only basis for making that decision. Fletcher would not wholly discard all of the ethical maxims of any community but he would insist that one must be willing to either compro-mise or completely disregard that maxim if love seemed to be better served by doing so. Thus Fletcher would in reality change God’s commandments to read more like the following: “Thou shalt not commit adultery ordinarily; thou shalt not steal ordinarily; thou shalt not lie ordinarily. Fletcher insists that “we would be better off to drop the legalist’s love of law and adopt only the law of love.” He believed that any ethical system must be relative (it changes from situation to situation). Thus you could not accept the Bible as being the absolute standard for our ethical values. Appeal is often made to Romans 13:8 where Paul said, “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law” (NKJV). More will be said about this later. While all of this may sound good and have its appeal to many people, we need to realize that situa-tion ethics destroys all real respect for the Bible. The Bible is the inerrant word of God. Yet Fletcher and oth-ers like him would set aside God’s law as authority just as the Jews of Jesus’ day who “made the command-ment of God of no effect by your tradition” (Mt. 15:6b). In such actions one shows a lack of respect for the au-thority of the Bible and in so doing also show a lack of respect for the Author of the Bible.
