Way to Go Eddyville Elementary Students! Over Winter Break, students in K-6 were challenged to read 10-20 minutes a day! Mrs. Nelson offered to serve hot cocoa and cookies to those students who completed the reading log. We are happy to report

that 165 students out of 300 made their goal. On Friday, January 5, Mrs. Lanphier and Mrs. Nelson served hot cocoa and cookies to all 165 kiddos. Great job reading! We are proud of all our students as

we continue to work toward creating a great habit of nightly reading. Well done! Blakesburg Preschoolers

are working on the letter “Q”.

“Q” is for “Quilt”, and Mrs. Merrilee Hinshaw

of Blakesburg came in to share her love

for quilt-making. She helped the preschoolers

connect the letter to the letter sound. ~Courtesy Barb Scott

Gratitude for Teachers Several educators were recently honored at Teacher Appreciation Night. This was the first year for this event at Eddyville Blakesburg Fremont, but was something that Guid-ance Counselor Laura Goemaat had seen done elsewhere. Mrs. Goemaat shared, “It is a tradition I have seen at other schools, and I really wanted to get it started here! Seniors involved with basketball (athletes, managers, and cheerleaders) picked one teacher who made a difference in their life as a student at EBF. The students wrote up why this teacher was picked, and then between the varsity girls and varsity boys game on Friday, January 5th, the nominations were read aloud and seniors escorted their nominated teacher onto the basketball court. Teachers received a plaque.” The following individuals were recognized. Tony Kurimski nominated by Torie Al-exander, who stated, “I chose Tony Kurimski for teacher appreciation night, even though he was never my teacher, because he was always really good at motivating our junior high basketball team and he helped us win many games. He is also a very kind and caring person who deserves recognition.”; Kristen Birchard nominated by Emma Bunnell, who stated, “I have really enjoyed having Mrs. Birchard as a teacher. She always pushes me to do my best and believes in me! I will never forget the impact she has made on me!”; Rachel Hadden nominated by Gracie DeLaCruz and Kennedy Landgrebe. Gracie stated, “She is always there for me on my bad days (which is like every day). She always knows how to make me smile. We get each other and she came to our school at the perfect time to make my high school career sooo much better.” Kennedy stated, “I picked Mrs. Hadden as a teacher who has made a difference in my life. She has shown me to be positive no matter what the situation and has taught me many life lessons.”; Gladys Genskow nominated by Alexis Taylor, who stated, “I picked Mrs. Genskow as a teacher who has made a difference in my life. While I have never had her as a ‘teacher’, she has coached me in volleyball and track throughout high school. She has taught me that if you want success, you have to be willing to try new things, work hard every day, and push through the pain. Because of Coach Genskow, I have earned several accomplishments in sports that I never even dreamed of achieving.”; Maura Young nominated by Randie Richmond and Jace Glosser. Randie stated, “I picked Ms. Young as a teacher who has impacted my life. In 5th and 6th grade, she would push us to get good grades and would stress the importance of that in high school. She was extremely tough, but she showed us how to enjoy learning also. Ms. Young helped shape our Blakesburg class into the mature, young adults we are today.” Jace stated, “Ms.Young has always been a role model to me. She taught me the importance of hard work and dedication in the classroom. Thank you for all the valuable lessons you've taught me.”; Brian Koehler nominated by KJ McCrea and Larry McKee. KJ stated, “Coach Koehler has helped me, and many other students, throughout the school become stronger. It has helped increase the success in our athletic programs. This helps bring our community and students together. Thank you for all the work you have put in Coach Koehler.” Larry stated, “He pushes me to get better. He tells me to believe in my-

self.”; Lisa Strausser nominated by Noah Strausser, who stated, “She always makes sure I have my work done and will make sure I understand the material in other classes. Lisa also works hard to give me a good life at school and at home.”; Tammy Walker nominated by Jake Sutton, who stated, “I think Tammy is a very good influence to younger kids she teaches. She is a very fun person to be around and talk with. She's not only my aunt, she can also be someone I can go to if I need anything.”; John Thompson nominat-ed by Joey Voyles, who stated, “Mr. Thompson has always been very involved in sports and other school activities. He's a great supporter for all the teams, and he always keeps the classroom fun with his sense of humor.”; Mindy Sinnif nominated by Derek Walker, who stated, “I chose Mindy because she cares a lot about her students and their futures. She was my 3rd grade teacher and taught me a lot about life and manners at that young age.”; Jessica Nollen nominated by Delaney Menuis, who stated, “Mrs. Nollen encourages so many students to do their best. Ever since 6th grade, she has been awesome!”

School Board Meeting When to Keep a Sick Child Home: Reference Guide for Parents

Deciding when a child is too sick to go to school can be dif-ficult. Please use the following guidelines to help you in your decision. Be sure to call your child’s school to let them know why your child is absent, and then send the appropri-ate note when your child returns to school. 1. Fever: student must be fever-free (<100.4 Fahrenheit) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin). 2. Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if the child acts or looks ill. Student must be symptom-free for 24 hours before re-turning. 3. Persistent nasal congestion, reddened eyes, sore throat, cough, or headaches that disrupt the student’s learning or pose a risk of disease transmission to others. 4. Unexplained skin eruptions or rashes. When in doubt, consult your child’s doctor before sending your child to school. 5. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) appearing as redness of the conjunctiva (lining of eye/ eyelid) with or without pus drain-age from eye and/ or swelling. Student should not return to school until they have been examined and treated. 6. Any other communicable illnesses in which you have been advised to remain out of school until cleared to return by the county health department or your child’s doctor (i.e. chicken pox, scabies, influenza, whooping cough, tuberculo-sis, measles, impetigo, etc.) 7. Any other health condition that in the school nurses judg-ment is of concern for the others health and well-being and that of the child. Here is a message from Choir Director Christopher Ellerston about an exciting new way

to support the music programs at our school. Dear Parents/Students, I want to quickly invite you to join me in supporting the EBF Music Boosters simply through purchasing gift cards through the Scrip Pro-gram. How does this work you ask? It's simple! You purchase a gift card to a place like Starbucks, Amazon, Target, Walmart. You pay the face value of the card and you get the same value. A percentage of that goes back to the EBF Music Boosters! It's awesome because simply by buying a gift card, you can support the work that the boosters do for our students. The turn around for the cards is very quick when the orders are placed. If you know you go someplace like Walmart on a regular basis, purchase a gift card monthly for the amount close to what you spend and you will also be supporting our music program. Go to https://shop.shopwithscrip.com/GetStarted and register your family and create orders. Our enrollment code is: 1D76D46758516 I will working soon to get Casey's in our list of businesses! If you have any questions, let me know! Please join me in supporting the musical education of our stu-dents through the purchase of cards we use on an almost day to day basis. Christopher Ellerston EBF Music Boosters Scrip Coordinator

REMINDER OF BASIC CYBERSAFETY TIPS FOR

PARENTS/GUARDIANS Children are exposed to the Internet at younger and younger ages. Cyberspace is at home, at school and friends’ homes. As a parent or guardian, it is important that you keep current with your children’s online activities and that you communicate with each other often. Learn all you can about the Internet and become famil-iar with social networking sites and terms. For younger children, find and mark sites for them to visit. These can include fun activity sites, library reference sites and search engines for help on school projects. Talk to your children about the Internet and the im-portance of being safe while online. Assure your children that that whatever rules you set are for their safety. Only operate computers in an open area of your home, such as the living room or kitchen. This will make it easier to monitor activity than if the computer is in your children’s rooms. Be familiar with parental control programs to filter/block inappropriate content for your children. Monitor your children’s Internet use, maintain access to their e-mail accounts and social networks they are on. If a child gets uneasy while on the computer as you enter the room, this might indicate that he or she is visiting an off-limits site. Have your children show you what they know how to do online, as well as their favorite sites. Get to know your children’s online friends. If your child informs you of an inappropriate site, report it to your ISP or the company that created the material. Set up and/or learn all of your children’s passwords and screen names/usernames (online identities). Make sure screen names don’t reveal information about your children’s real names, addresses, school or age. Spend time online to-gether until you are assured that your children understand the potential dangers and how to handle difficult situations. “Google” your children’s names on the Internet. Look at profiles and any postings about them. If your children go to other homes, find out what rules they have in place for Internet usage.

If you have children, the Internet creates jobs for you to do. The In-ternet requires your involvement as a parent - From preschool through high school.

On January 4th the Rocket Wrestling Team hosted their last home dual of the season. We also honored our parents, seniors and youth wrestlers. As a surprise and in support of wrestler Nolan Stetter, the whole team wore "Wendy's Warriors" t-shirts to honor his mother Wendy who couldn't attend Parent Night with him, because she is hospitalized and recovering from a stroke she suffered on Dec. 12th.

4-Hers Serving the District In December, members of the Boots and

Blue Jeans 4-H group generously shopped

for and donated enough household supplies

and food items to fill eight totes for EBF

families. Two totes were given to each building, for fami-

lies who might appreciate some extra supplies. Members

of the club were very happy they could help members of

their community throughout the EBF district.

STEM Students Work with NWS 6th grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer-ing, and Mathematics) students are pictured with a radiosonde and balloon that was found in a farm field of STEM student, Blake, on December 3rd. It was released from Omaha, Nebraska, on November 1. The students examined and researched it, and then brainstormed a list of questions. There were direc-tions on the radiosonde to re-turn it to the National Weather Service, so they included a letter with their questions. They are excited to hear back from NWS!
