General Manager’s Report


As I sit down to write this article a few days after the 4th of July, I think of the last few months and

especially the warm welcome I have received from both the Membership and staff. I feel very lucky to be part of the Colleton River family, serving family.

With respect to the Independence Day holiday, I would like to extend my thanks to our staff who worked so hard to make your holiday week a memorable one. You

will be interested to learn that on the evening of the fourth we served nearly 700 members and their guests. We are excited and already planning for next year! No one left hungry - check out the week’s grocery list below.

Staffing: I would be remiss if I did not extend special recognition to Tim Snyder, Colleton’s CFO, who will be leaving us at the end of August and to Rose Dodson, Colleton’s Chief Accountant, as she moves to her cabin in the mountains in September. Please join me in wishing them both well in retirement and thanking them for all their years of service. We have filled Tim’s position and are currently in the process of interviewing to fill Rose’s position. Mrs. Stephanie Kerr will be joining us as our new CFO in early August and we are excited about her arrival.

Food & Beverage: Numbers are strong as the Membership continues to enjoy Chef Robert’s cuisine. We are focusing on training all of our staff and have implemented some techniques such as the “Member Name Game” to help staff recognize all of our Members. You can look forward to some great events as we move through the remainder of the year.

Golf: Operationally Matt Lucchesi is looking for another assistant and we will be re-evaluating other staffing needs. Matt has some great ideas such as night golf, inter-club play, home and homes, and travel opportunities which he will soon be rolling out to you. As for the golf courses, the Nicklaus continues to improve and we will be closing the Dye for the improvements outlined in Dick Anderson’s recent Membership communication.

Long Range Plan: At the May 1st Town Hall meeting, under the heading of “path forward,” a proposed increase in the initiation fee was discussed. We told you that it would be brought to the Membership for a vote. We are working on logistics and will be coming back to you with more information in the fall. We continue to focus on getting a better understanding of the projects identified in the Long Range Plan and through the discussion groups held this past spring. Here is an update on several items… Jim Lipe, lead Nicklaus designer, visited Colleton River on June 26th and 27th to evaluate practical options and designs at the Borland including a short game practice area and other opportunities. As we head into the ‘back nine” of 2013, there is a lot going on around

Colleton River, all good. Our new General Manager, Tim Bakels, is wrapping up his “shakedown cruise” in the low country and becoming known to an incredibly large number of our members. I have lived in Colleton for 6 years and Tim is already telling me many things of which I previously had no knowledge! It is kind of scary, but as one of my “friends” suggested, it probably has something to do with comparative social skills!

We had yet another very successful Member-Member tournament, congratulations to all the winners, the staff and the participants, who make this event something very special. We also had, what I consider, a very good Town Hall meeting where we spent most of our time reviewing and discussing the Long Range Plan. Your Board has been “processing” all that we heard at that meeting and subsequent to it. As you heard more than once, we will be focusing on changes to our governing documents that will permit us to increase our Initiation Fee which in turn will facilitate a purposeful rollout of our Plan with its associated capital projects. We all appreciate the encouragement we have received from countless members.

I would finally be remiss if I didn’t draw our collective attention to an important moment at the recent Town Hall session when our well respected friend and neighbor, Wendy Baker, read us a version of the “riot act.” The litany of large and small irritants she recited, almost all due to insensitive or otherwise inappropriate member behavior, is something we all need to work on. If we focus on giving the high level of respect to all Colleton’s constituencies, which they so richly deserve, we will be fine. As Tim Bakels pointed out to me, it is just a series of great opportunities.

Note from Your Club President

expected by Labor Day. Curbing and asphalt work along Colleton River Drive between Mulberry and Drayton Hall is almost complete, and repair of Mulberry Circle is moving forward. If you joined us on July 4th, you no doubt noticed the beautiful landscaping work on the island adjacent to the Conference & Tennis Center. With respect to tennis, a new ball machine is on the way and you should starting seeing work on bleachers, court lighting and other enhancements come August. For your convenience, courts can now be booked online through the member website. As we prepare for the fall season you will see new tables, chairs and curtains at the Halfway Café; additional front desk coverage in the Fitness Center from September through December; and the advancement of the walking and nature trail systems with maps and signage.

Storage: The storage area at the Nicklaus Golf Maintenance Facility is available for boat, RV, trailer and motorcycle storage. The facility is fenced, lighted and secure, with an automatic access gate system, controlled and managed by security 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Fire Department: As you know, Colleton River is providing temporary housing for firefighters to be stationed continuously on property, reinstating Colleton River’s Class 3 ISO rating. Preliminarily, we have identified property adjacent to the storage area for the permanent facility.

Safety: Please drive carefully regardless of whether you travel by automobile or golf cart. As part of our safety initiative, additional signage and striping have been added at key intersections, with line-of-sight trimming to follow close behind. The cart path effort along Foot Point remains on track with the removal of trees and asphalt work. Additional plantings will wrap up the project in early September. I am also happy to report that the use of stationary radar and the heads-up of upcoming radar “hot spots” in e-blasts have resulted in a marked decrease in speeding violations. Thank you for adhering to posted speed limits.

Finance: June was another successful month. Three weddings helped to improve the bottom line. Through the first six months, results from operations were better than anticipated. Currently we are still expected to remain on budget through year end.

In closing, it has been an exciting few months and promises to only get better! I look forward to many years of service to the Membership and want you to know that my door is always open. Have a wonderful summer and to our Members heading out for the season, we wish you safe travels and look forward to your return home.

Director of Golf Matt Lucchesi wins PGA Professionals Championship

Colleton River’s Matt Lucchesi followed his first-round 71 with a second-round 76 to hold off Cherokee Plantation’s Mark Tomedolskey to win the Professionals Championship on May 21 at Moss Creek Golf Club’s South Course.

2015 U.S. Junior AmateurAlthough two years away from the 2015 U.S. Junior Ama-

teur Championship, preparations are ongoing to get ready for what is sure to be a great event for Colleton River and the Hilton Head area. The Colleton River Host Committee which is made up of our own membership is seeking your support in joining “Team Colleton” as we prepare to host the next generation of top golfers. An abundant number of volunteers are needed for this Championship, so if you are interested in volunteering, please visit the U.S. Junior Amateur page on the club website for more information about volunteer opportunities.

Our summer Reciprocal Program is in effect so don’t miss out on this great oppor-tunity to play some of the Lowcountry’s other fine facilities. This program is offered July 1st through September 15th and gives Colleton River Members the ability to play golf at the reciprocal properties for a very modest fee. Members can also host Guests at the reciprocal properties for the accompanied guest rate of said property. Reciprocal arrangements must be made by contacting any member of our Golf Professional Staff. During the same period, our accompanied guest rate will be $75. This is a great oppor-tunity for you to invite a local friend for a round of golf or make a trip with friends, stay in the cottages and take advantage of this great summer rate.

Although the summer is usually the quietest of the four seasons here on the Planta-tion, we will be hosting two major events on our Nicklaus Course. On August 9-10, we will host the Hilton Head Open, and September 9-12, we will host the WSCGA Women’s South Carolina Stroke Play Championship. We anticipate full fields for both events as the top local and state players compete on our demanding Nicklaus Course.

This past spring didn’t bring us the best golfing weather, but participation for several events was well attended and the golf staff would like to congratulate our winners and thank each of you for your support of the events. In addition to our member events, we hosted the RBC Executive Outing during the week of the RBC Heritage in which several RBC executives and their top clients enjoyed a great day on our Dye Course. Along with these executives and clients were PGA Tour Players Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Graham DeLeat, and Luke Donald. All of the participants raved about the beauty and great golfing conditions they experienced. There was no doubt they were treated to a great Colleton River experience!

Where Are We Having Dinner?Two of the biggest golf events in the southeast United States are the RBC Heritage at Harbor Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island and

the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. I was invited by the PGA Tour and Callaway Golf to help with

some Wounded Warrior club fittings at these events and afterwards, was fortunate enough to spend the rest of the day on the range and

putting greens.

As a Teaching Professional it doesn’t get much better than helping veterans hit better shots then watching the world’s best players working

with their swing coaches. I was both fascinated and disappointed at the same time and here is why: It was encouraging to see the best

players in the world working on basics like aim, posture, and swing, (yes, there was TrackMan launch monitors everywhere) but saw no

revolutionary teaching, new insights or “secrets.” As a matter of fact, I heard more discussion about where they (player, coach, and caddy)

were going to eat dinner that night than how to hit a golf ball! Was it possible that they were simply managing the basics that they already

gleaned from years of practice? Are the coach and caddy just two more sets of eyes to keep the player on track? Can it be that simple

and, more importantly, should you be doing the same thing? The answer is yes to all of the above. While driving back home from these

events, I was reaffirmed that the Colleton River Golf Academy’s teaching philosophy was right in line with what the best players in the

world are doing, and that is learning to “Manage Your Golf Game.” It all starts with the basics and what works best for you. If you’d like to

improve your golf game, find out your basics by using one of your Academy instructors and get started on more consistent golf with tour

player like practice. Now, where should we have dinner?

Summertime in the Lowcountry is a great time to travel, relax, play at a reciprocal course, or work on your golf game. Even after a successful spring, the Golf Academy is still busy working on many things this summer to help with our vision of operating the finest teaching program for a club community

in the U.S.A. Our “to do” list is designed to help the Golf Professional staff become better teachers and players, and in turn help the membership “Manage Your Game.” Some of the things on our list are instructor training days, playing with the membership and in tournaments, hosting the 4th Annual CRGA Teaching Summit, Junior Sports Camps, Patriot Golf Day (September), updating our social media content and taping new video golf tips. On behalf of the Golf Academy Instructors, thank you for supporting the Academy programs and we hope you have a great summer wherever you play.

An exhibit of paintings inspired by the tranquil beauty and charm of the Lowcountry were displayed at the Dye Clubhouse at Colleton River in June featuring works from local painters Cynthia Knott and West Fraser.

Members honed their painting skills during a 3-day workshop with artist Peggy Ellis. Peggy paints in both oil and watercolor, and finds her inspiration in the Lowcountry, as do our resident artists!


B ottlenose dolphin live and play in the Port Royal Sound tidal rivers. Every dolphin displays a unique identifying dorsal fin. They live

17 to 50 years in groups of 6-8 called “pods” to gather food and raise their calves. They can swim at speeds up to 20 mph and dive 1,000 feet. Please be careful with your boat propellers this summer and remember it is against the law to feed dolphin!

Bottlenose dolphin use technical echo-location and possibly passive hearing to locate their favorite fish – red drum, black drum, sea trout and flounder. In their bulbous forehead is a “sound lens” of fatty tissue focusing a beam of sound energy forward. It sends ultrasounds through the water which bounce back to the dolphin and then are detected in their “melon” organ, which decodes the message much like sonar. The lower jaw receives the energy from the outgoing sound waves bouncing off objects in front of the dolphin. The elongated upper and lower jaws form a rostrum or snout giving them their common name. The blow-hole is the real functioning nose in the top of their head. Sounds come from 6 air sacs near the blow-hole. Signature whistles may help the individuals recognize

each other. These vocalizations and clicks might sound like a heavy metal band to us.

Dr. Eric Monte, University of South Carolina professor, is studying the fish and dolphin communication in our local embayments. Submerging acoustic recorders in the water, he records the salinity and temperature as well as the sounds. His research includes effects of pollutants on brain development and hearing loss in fish and dolphin. Dr. Monte is partnering with the Port Royal Sound Foundation and NOAA and will be conducting research at the Maritime Center on Lemon Island in the near future.

A unique cooperative feeding effort of the bottlenose dolphin is “strand feeding”. A group of 2-3 dolphin charge a gently sloping bank creating a wave laden with small fish, which pushes them above the water line. The dolphin temporarily “stranded,” eat and then flop backwards back into the water. Dolphin are half asleep in increments of minutes to hours during an 8 hour cycle: one brain hemisphere remains active controlling the necessary surfacing and breathing, while the other shuts down. They stay near the surface

swimming slowly (“logging”) often with one eye closed. These marine animals are an important barometer (like the coal mine canary) of the health of our waters.

Dolphin are susceptible to environmental pollutants just like humans. Colleton River Plantation Club is situated inside the Port Royal Sound and residents can help preserve this embayment by controlling harmful chemical and excessive fresh water runoff from yards into marshes and rivers. Learn more during our “Nature Series” this fall when Dr. Eric Monte will talk about his dolphin research and Dr. Chris Marsh will discuss the future health of the PRS waters and how Colleton River can be good stewards and neighbors. Imagine the southern charm of a ceremony under Spanish moss-covered oak trees, set against a stunning backdrop of breathtaking water views and spectacular sunsets. At Colleton River Plantation Club, a wedding is a time to

celebrate with our Members, their family and friends. In the history of the Club, countless ceremonies have been held on the lawns of both the Nicklaus Clubhouse, overlooking the Colleton River, and the Dye Clubhouse, overlooking the Port Royal Sound; as well as under the historic oaks beyond the Dye lawn.

From rehearsal dinners on the river and sunset cruises from the community dock, to golf tournaments with the best men, every event is a special occasion. It is truly an honor that so many of our Members and their children have chosen to spend the most important day of their lives here at Colleton River Plantation Club.

Habitat for Humanity Says Thank You to Colleton River Several months ago, members of the Colleton River Plantation Friends of Habitat committed to raising $125,000 to help fund “The Glen,” a new Habitat development on Hilton Head Island. Because of the generosity of the Colleton River Membership that goal was not only achieved, it was exceeded. Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity would like to extend a heartfelt thanks.

SCORE at Trask Landing Colleton River Members Jim Cubbin, Sam Boyd, Billy Adams and Bill McDaniel worked with the South Carolina DNR on their SouthCarolina Oyster Recovery and Enhancement project (SCORE) at the Trask Boat Landing at the end of Sawmill Creek Road. Thirty students from McCracken Middle School were also there helping the cause! The 30-year environmental project, which is the most advanced of its kind in the country, is aimed at restoring and enhancing the oyster habitat along the SC coast. They obtain discarded oyster shells from restaurants, oyster roasts and other sources, bag them into 25 pound packages, and pile them along the edge of the marsh. This is essential to maintaining a healthy oyster industry.

Garden ClubThe ladies of the Garden Club had a lovely tea and garden tour at Susan Key’s home on April 24th. 41 gardeners were treated to a tour conducted by Bonnie from Carolyn’s Nursery. The Garden Club has GROWN! They now have 77 members!

Colleton’s group of Lifelong Learners are making plans for their Fifth Season. Headed up by Lynda Rankin and Maxine Melcher the following committee is hard at work planning lectures, field trips, speakers to further advance our knowledge and appreciation of this wonderful area: Paula Williams, Sue Glancey, Doris Beedie, Mary McKane, Janice Norton, Leslie Kreuzer, Betty Schuster, Jo Gambill, Pat Miller, Susie Drobny, Linda Irgens, Tom and Sandy Wooster and Judy and Dave Russett.

There will be visits to the Penn Center, Parris Island Marine Base, backstage of the Arts Center, a bus tour to the Savannah River Site (bomb plant), a boat tour of the Port of Savannah and a walking tour of historic Bluffton. There will be speakers on the history of the Lowcountry rice culture, the Mitchelville Preservation Project and hopefully, the Drobny’s daughter to tell us about her experience in the Iditarod dog sled race! In January the History Committee that was responsible for the collection of historical artifacts and informational plaques at the Dye Clubhouse will present a program that will refresh

our memories and introduce our new members to the rich history of this particular piece of ground that we now call our home.
