Mass Intentions From the Pastor’s Pen As you enter our new St. James Church and walk up the center
aisle, you will notice an emblem in the floor, the first of six. The first
depicts a church and has the words “Compostela” on the emblem.
It is a reminder of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in
northwestern Spain. Legend holds that after he was martyred the
remains of St. James the Apostle were carried by boat to this site
and buried here. The site eventually became a place of pilgrimage.
Another legend holds that St. James miraculously appeared to fight
for the Christian army against the invading Moors, and so he is
called the “Moor-Slayer.”
During the Middle Ages, Compostela became a destination for
Christian pilgrims, the third most popular site after the Holy Land
and Rome. The road (camino) leading to Compostela to this day
continues to be a popular route for pilgrims. The route begins in
southern France, crosses the Pyranees, and continues across
northern Spain, ending at the Cathedral. The symbol of the Camino
pilgrim is the scallop shell. One legend says that as the ship carry-
ing the remains of St. James was coming to shore, a violent storm
caused a shipwreck. The remains eventually were washed on the
shore intact, covered with scallops. You will notice an image of the
scallop and the cathedral on our St. James Transfiguration mural.
St. James is the patron saint of Spain and of pilgrims. His greatest
importance is that he was a powerful witness and apostle of Jesus,
giving his life for the faith. We are honored to have him as our par-
ish patron. His feast is celebrated this Saturday, July 25.
On a personal note, several years ago my classmate, Fr. Dennis
Schaab, and I had the privilege of making a pilgrimage to Compos-
tela. One part of the trip is engrained in my memory. There is an
immense statue of St. James at the back of the sanctuary wall.
Behind the wall is a stairway leading up to the back of the statue.
The custom is for pilgrims upon reaching the top to put their arms
around his shoulders and to give him a hug!
As we celebrate the feast this Saturday, we rejoice that we have
St. James as our patron and that we belong to this loving parish.
May his prayers bring blessings to all of us.
My prayers are with you each day.
Fr. Michael

I recently read a poem by Eduardo Galeano entitled The Nobodies. Eduardo was a writer and journalist born in Motevideo, Uruguay in 1940. He was imprisoned in 1973 after a military coup in Uru-
guay, later forced to flee into exile in Argentina, and in 1976 to flee to Spain after another military coup in Ar-gentina. While in Spain he wrote Memoria del fuego (Memory of Fire), a powerful indictment of colonialism in the Americas. He once commented, “I’m a writer, ob-sessed with remembering, with remembering the past of America and above all that of Latin America, intimate land condemned to amnesia. His writings compared slavery to freedom and democracies to dictatorships. He eventually returned to his homeland and in 1991 wrote The Nobodies. This poem begins “Fleas dream of buying themselves a dog, and nobodies dream of escaping poverty. . .” In the last part of the poem Edu-ard provides a vivid contrast between the nobodies and the somebodies ending with: “[the nobodies] Who do not have faces. . .who do not appear in the history of the world. . .who are not worth the bullets that kill them.” I was struck by his brutal images and thought, Who are today’s ”nobodies?
In Jesus’ time women and children were “nobodies.” They had no rights, were without status, and consid-ered to be property of the male head of the family. Without a man in the household, women and children were forced into a life of begging or worse, selling themselves. Jesus broke with tradition, however, show-ing love and concern to women and children and ele-vating them to positions of dignity and respect.
I cannot possibly list all the “nobodies” within today’s world and cultures. I believe, however, there are some obvious choices for this title in the United States: na-tive Americans, immigrants, people of color, the poor, the homeless, the sick and elderly, and yes still women and children. Of course, we have made advances in protecting the vulnerable, but there seems to be an atti-tude that some lives are more valuable, therefore need-ing to be protected and preserved, than others. I cannot help but wonder, “What would Jesus do?” What would Jesus tell me to do? In answer I regress to my elemen-tary school years when I first learned these words:
“Love [and care for] one another, as I have love you.” I think it is clear what Jesus is saying to each of us. Treat one another with love and kindness, respect and dignity, justice and mercy, compassion and empathy. I remember when I first memorized the Golden Rule:
“Treat others as you want to be treated.” These words are so clear and concise, Jesus simply asks me to love.

Hillcrest Hope Apartment
Thank you to everyone who helped us prepare and stock the St. James-sponsored apartment at Hillcrest Hope.
Our new residents, a family with a teenage son, moved in last week to a
clean apartment (thanks to Maureen Garza and Ivan Tajchman) and were greeted with a move-in meal (thanks to the Findlay family). The family fell on difficult times following a health issue layered with the unexpected and very quick sale of the home they were renting.
We ask for prayer support as the family spends the next 90 days getting back on their feet thanks to this second chance program. Upon completion of the program, we hope to celebrate with the family at the Hillcrest graduation. Watch for more news on that front in the coming weeks.
