Governing Board of Trustees At RMC, we depend on our Governing Board of Trustees’ leadership and commitment. As a public, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) hospital and the largest employer in Delaware County, the volunteer role each of these elected officials serve is crucial. They contribute to ensuring the mission and strategy of RMC are in-line with what the communities we serve need and deserve. We hold them in the highest regard and would like to thank each of them for giving back.

Greetings from Charlie I am excited to share with you some of the initiatives we are undertaking at Regional Medical Center to remain a strong healthcare system. As we see the many challenges facing rural healthcare in Iowa and the rest of the country, we can safely say that RMC is up for the challenge. Above all else, our success is based on quality patient care and exceptional patient experiences. I have been amazed in the last few months on how many positive conversations, emails, and cards I have received from patients and families showing appreciation for their care at RMC. The credit goes to our talented and caring group of providers and staff who truly put patients first.

There are several strategic goals in fiscal year 2019 (which ends in June) that have been accomplished, all while remaining financially stable. (1) We are proud to have our new in-house MRI to provide a better patient experience and improved technology. (2) We have successfully recruited several providers to keep your healthcare needs local. (3) Regional Family Health Urgent

Care expanded to include Sunday coverage. (4) We have secured a future location in Dyersville for a primary care clinic to more conveniently serve the east side of Delaware County.

With input from our providers, staff, leadership team, and Board of Trustees, we are finalizing our strategic plan and goals for fiscal year 2020. Our top priorities are to expand behavioral health services, improve community wellness, replace our electronic medical record system, increase surgery coverage, and remodel our OB space. New to our process this year in tackling these goals, we will be asking staff and community members to participate on task forces to help shape RMC’s future.

I would like to close by introducing RMC’s new values. These values were developed by a group of 25 employees called “IGNITE” who are devoted to providing a more positive culture at RMC.

Mindi Jackson: DAISY Award Winner & Iowa’s 100 Great Nurses Nominee

When someone in our community has an emergent medical event, it is important we have the right team and equipment ready.

With this as our priority, RMC recently purchased a new ambulance and made changes to how paramedic shifts are scheduled. A simplified scheduling model where a paramedic works 24 hours, then has 48 hours off will provide several benefits. During the 24-hour shift, there are built-in rotating “downtimes” for three scheduled paramedics, allowing two paramedics to be available for the hospital and main ambulance calls while one paramedic is resting but available for back-up ambulance calls.

According to Spenser VandeVoorde, EMS Coordinator, this scheduling update has been very well-received.

Every day, nurses make a difference in the lives of their patients. This year, Mindi Jackson, OR/ASC nurse, was honored not once, but twice, for going above and beyond.

DAISY Award regmedctr.org/daisy

On January 30, 2019, Mindi was surprised by her colleagues with an award ceremony. Mindi was nominated for a DAISY Award by Teresa Conrad, a fellow nurse at RMC. “When I hear the term ‘extraordinary nurse’, one nurse comes to mind,” shared Teresa. “Her name is Mindi Jackson.”

Teresa went on to share how Mindi has impacted her life in many ways, one being during the birth of her daughter, when Mindi was her OB nurse. “Labor didn’t go smoothly and we ended up in a complicated emergency C-section. Mindi was calm and collected the whole time, and made sure to keep us informed with what all was going on. While all of this exceeded our expectations, this was only the beginning of Mindi’s strong influence in my life. Mindi is the most extraordinary nurse that I have ever met because of her compassion, attention to detail in those surrounding her, and empathy.”

100 Great Iowa Nurses Mindi was named to the 100 Great Iowa Nurses list for 2019. The 100 Great Iowa Nurses program “identifies 100 outstanding nurses every year whose courage, competence, and commitments to patients and the nursing profession stand out above all others.”

Mindi will be honored at the 100 Great Iowa Nurses Celebration in May.

He’s found morale is much higher when everyone is less tired.

“The new schedule should decrease staff fatigue, increase patient and paramedic safety, and improve staff retention,” said VandeVoorde.

With this new schedule, two new paramedics were hired. Overall, the

scheduling system implementation cost was over $150,000 and the new ambulance cost about $190,000, but VandeVoorde says this proves how committed RMC is to excellent emergency medical care.

“EMS is not a moneymaker, it is a vital community service,” VandeVoorde said.

RMC Auxiliary Donates to Three Departments The RMC Auxiliary’s mission is to promote wellness in the community, serve as a bridge between RMC and the community, and assist RMC in meeting its goals by fundraising. In 2019, the Auxiliary was able to fund three special items, totalling almost $15,000. Dollars for these donations stem from fundraisers and HILLTOP Gift Shop sales.

FY2019 Fundraising was a Success! The Sheppard MRI Suite is officially ready for patients. Thank you to Siemens, Cassling, the construction crews, and donors who made this a reality for our community.

Our fundraising goal was $60,000. With your support, this was surpassed with $94,322.26 raised to date for MRI (helping offset the $919,999 cost of this new equipment). We are very excited to offer this state-of-the-art imaging to our patients! THANK YOU!

RFH Expandingto DyersvilleWe are excited to announce that Regional Family Health will be expanding to a location in Dyersville, with an opening in mid-2020. The clinic will be located next to Highway 20, within the boundaries of Delaware County. We are looking forward to this exciting development! More information to come soon.

Urgent Care vs. Primary CareRegional Family Health is proud to offer services for your overall health as well as your family’s urgent healthcare needs.

Let’s talk about the difference between the two and the best way for your family to utilize both options.

What is the difference between Urgent Care and Primary Care? While urgent care is a great option for non-emergent injuries or illnesses after hours, it does not replace your primary care. Urgent care should only be used alongside primary care.

How should you use Urgent Care?Urgent care should only be used when medical attention is required for acute, but non-life threatening illnesses or injuries after clinic hours. One common misconception about urgent care is that it’s the same as seeing your primary care provider for a routine checkup, when in fact the care you receive at urgent care is specific to your illness at the time of the visit. For example, if you go to urgent care with a sore throat, the provider will treat only that symptom.

What are the benefits of seeing your Primary Care Provider vs. Urgent Care?Because your primary care provider sees you regularly for wellness checkups and has had time to get to know you and your medical history, they have a better overall picture of your health. They have the background to support you regarding your health long-term, including possible chronic health concerns, nutrition, stress management, and mental health.

Primary care is also important for preventative care. Our providers talk with you and help guide you so you can work together to catch things before they become larger healthcare concerns. This may include important screenings like mammograms, colonoscopies, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and more. See your primary

care provider annually so you can be proactive with your healthcare.

Overall, primary care enables patients and providers to maintain a consistent and important relationship. This relationship develops trust, allows more efficient appointments, and improves outcomes. Our goal is to care for you in the best way possible.

Are flexible appointments still available during the day?Yes. One of the things that sets Regional Family Health apart is our team approach and how closely all of our providers work together. This means that even if you cannot see your regular provider, another qualified team member is almost always available to you and your family for a same-day appointment.
