The Resurrection

(Heb 11:17-19 NKJV) By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, {18} of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," {19} concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

The Resurrection

(Job 19:25-27 NKJV) For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; {26} And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, {27} Whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!

The Resurrection(Dan 12:1-4 NKJV) "At that time Michael shall stand

up, The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; And there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, Even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. {2} And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt. {3} Those who are wise shall shine Like the brightness of the firmament, And those who turn many to righteousness Like the stars forever and ever. {4} "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase."

The Resurrection

But it doesn’t come to full revealing until the New Testament

The Lord had much to say about it.Our understanding of it is completed

by the apostles, particularly Paul, in his epistles, and John in the Revelation.

Page 11: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

There are four types of resurrection discussed in the NT:

• Raising a dead person to life, but to die again

• The resurrection of Jesus Christ• The resurrection in this life of those baptized

into Christ – Rom. 6.4; Rev. 20.5-6• And the bodily resurrection of all at the end

of the age

Page 12: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

It is this last, “General” resurrection that we want to focus on today.

Page 13: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

It is clear that many of the Jews believed there will be a general resurrection of the dead…

Page 14: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

• (John 11:24-25 NKJV) Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." {25} Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”

Page 15: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Acts 23:8 NKJV) For Sadducees say that there is no resurrection; and no angel or spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

Page 16: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Acts 24:15 NKJV) "I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.”

Paul’s defense before the Roman governor, Felix

Page 17: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

What can we know about it?

1.That many will not believe in it…

Page 18: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Mat 22:23 NKJV) The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him…”

See also Mark 12.18 and Luke 20.27

Page 19: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Acts 17:32 NKJV) And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, "We will hear you again on this matter.“

The worldly wise…

Page 20: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Acts 26:23-24 NKJV) "that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles." {24} Now as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad!”

Page 21: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

What can we know about it?

1.That many will not believe in it…

And so we should not be surprised that people don’t believe it today.

Page 22: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

What can we know about it?

1.That many will not believe in it…2.But it will happen…

Page 23: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

We have the Lord’s word on it…

Page 24: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Mark 12:26-27 NKJV) "But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? {27} "He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly mistaken."

Page 25: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(John 5:25-29 NKJV) "Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. {26} "For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, {27} "and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. {28} "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice {29} "and come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.”

Page 26: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(John 6:39-40 NKJV) "This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. {40} "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Page 27: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

We have the words of the Apostles on it…

(Acts 10:42 NKJV) "And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.

(Peter to Cornelius)

Page 28: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

We have the words of the Apostles on it…

(1 Cor 6:14 NKJV) And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.

The entire chapter of 1 Cor. 15

(1 Cor 15:12-13 NKJV) Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? {13} But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.

Page 29: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

What can we know about it?

1.That many will not believe in it…2.But it will happen…because we have

the word of God on it3.We know “when” it will come…

Page 30: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(John 11:24-25 NKJV) Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." {25} Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”

It will be “at the last day.”

Page 31: The Resurrection.

Page 32: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(1 Th 4:16 NKJV) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

When the Lord is revealed from heaven.

Page 33: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Mat 12:41-42 NKJV) "The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. {42} "The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

Page 34: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Heb 6:1-2 NKJV) Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, {2} of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Page 35: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Rev 20:11-13 NKJV) Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. {12} And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. [continued next slide]

Page 36: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

{13} The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

At the judgment

The Resurrection

What can we know about it?

1.That many will not believe in it…2.But it will happen…because we have

the word of God on it3.We know “when” it will come…4.We know what it will be like…

Page 38: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

It will be a “resurrection” (anastasis – a standing up again) – referring to the body

Page 39: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(1 Cor 15:42-44 NKJV) So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. {43} It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. {44} It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Page 40: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

Those raised will be gathered into two groups:

(Mat 25:31-33 NKJV) "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. {32} "All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. {33} "And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.”

Page 41: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Mat 25:46 NKJV) "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

One group to everlasting punishment, the other to eternal life.

We are not given much information on the resurrection body of those going into punishment. Only a hint at Gal. 6.7-8 [next slide]

Page 42: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(Gal 6:7-8 NKJV) Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. {8} For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

The Resurrection

Those counted worthy of the resurrection to eternal life can look forward to…

(Luke 20:35-36 NKJV) "But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; {36} "nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.”

Page 45: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

Those counted worthy of the resurrection to eternal life can look forward to…

(Rom 6:5 NKJV) For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection…”

Page 46: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(1 John 3:1-3 NKJV) Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. {2} Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. {3} And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Page 47: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

(2 Pet 1:4 NKJV) by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

This is the promise to those who escape the corruption that is in the world through

lust.

Page 48: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

We overcome the world through Christ –

(John 16:33 NKJV) "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

Page 49: The Resurrection. Abraham believed in it – Heb. 11.19

The Resurrection

We overcome the world through Christ –

(1 John 5:4-5 NKJV) For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world; our faith. {5} Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
