English consist of four skills, there are listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Reading is one of important skills that must be learned by the students. Because most
of the students’ test in written form and reading test. That’s why; the students should
master reading skills, such as scanning, skimming, and referring words, etc. So, they
can increase their reading comprehension. Even though reading is dominant in
teaching English, but the result of students’s reading test is still unsatisfactory and
many students get low scores. In this case the teacher should use appropriate method
to make the students more interested and active in the classroom. Course Review
Horay is one of method that can be used by the English teacher to teach reading.
Hopefully, it can increase the students’ reading comprehension.
The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant different of
the reading comprehension of descriptive text of the eighth grade students of SMP N
2 Welahan in academic year 2013/2014 before and after being taught by using Course
Review horay.
This research is an experimental research used one group with pre-test and post-
test. The population of this research was all of the eighth grade students of SMP N 2
Welahan in academic year 2013/2014.The number of sample is 41 students which are
taken by cluster randomly from the eighth grade students. The writer took class VIIID
as the sample. The writer taught descriptive texts and used reading test (multiple
choices) that consist of 25 items. Test used as the instrument of this research. The
data of the research are pre-test and post-test to get the score and to know the data
before and after being taught by using Course Review Horay. These score showed
that there is significant different between the reading comprehension of the eighth
grade students of SMP N 2 Welahan in academic year 2013/2014 before and after
being taught by using Course Review Horay.
The result of this research can be seen from the mean of the pre-test at55 and SD
at 12.03. While the mean of post-test is 74, SD is 11.08. Hypothesis testing in the
level of significance 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) 40, the t-observation (t0) at
14.31 and t-table (tt) at 2.021, the t-observation is higher than t-table (t0 = 14.31>tt=
2.021). Therefore, the writer concludes that there is a significant difference between

Review Horay.
Thus the writer indicates that the teachers can use Course Review Horay in
teaching reading because it can give good contribution as a method in improving the
reading comprehension of the students. And for further researcher, the writer suggests
to be more creative to modify Course Review Horay as a method of teaching reading.

Bahasa inggris terdiri dari empat ketrampilan, ada mendengarkan, berbicara,
membaca, dan menulis. Membaca adalah salah satu ketrampilan penting yang harus
dipelajari oleh siswa. Karena kebanyakan dari ulangan siswa dalam bentuk tertulis
dan test membaca. Maka dari itu, siswa harus menguasai ketrampilan membaca.
Seperti mengamati, menyaring, dan merujuk kata, dan lain sebagainya. Jadi, mereka
dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membacanya. Meskipun membaca adalah utama di
dalam pengajaran bahasa inggris, tetapi hasil dari siswa dalam test membaca masih
belum memuaskan dan banyak siswa mendapat nilai rendah. Dalam kasus ini
seoreang guru harus menggunakan metode yang tepat untuk membuat siswa lebih
tertarik dan aktif di dalam sebuah ruang kelas. Course review Horay adalah salah satu
metode yang dapat digunakan oleh seorang guru bahasa inggris untuk mengajar
membaca. Diharapkan, itu dapat meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman membaca
siswa.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang
signifikan terhadap kemampuan membaca siswa kelas Kelas VIII SMP N 2 Welahan
tahun ajaran 2013/2014 sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan menggunakan Course
Review Horay.
Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen menggunakan satu kelompok dengan
pre-test dan post-test. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas VIII SMP
N 2 Welahan tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Jumlah sampel adalah 41 siswa yang diambil
secara acak berkelompok dari siswa kelas VIII. Peneliti mengambil kelas VIII D
sebagai sampel. Peneliti mengajar deskriptif teks dan menggunaka tes membaca
(pilihan ganda) yang terdiri dari 25 soal. Tes digunakan sebagai alat dalam penelitian
ini. Data yang digunakan untuk penelitian adalah pre-test dan post-test untuk
memperoleh nilai siswa dan untuk mengetahui data sebelum dan sesudah diajar
dengan menggunakan Course Review Horay. Dari nilai tersebut menunjukkan bahwa
adanya perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan membaca siswa kelas Kelas
VIII SMP N 2 Welahan tahun ajaran 2013/2014 sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan
menggunakan Course Review Horay.

Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat dilihat dari rata-rata pre-test adalah 55, standard
deviasinya adalah 12.03. Sedangkan rata-rata dari post-test adalah 74, standard
deviasi adalah 11.03. Pengujian hipotesis di level signifikasi 0.05 dan tingkat
kebebasan (df) 40, t-observasi (t0) adalah 14.31 dan t-tabel (tt) adalah 2.021, t-
observasi lebih tinggi daripada t-tabel (t0 = 14.31 > tt = 2.021). Maka, peneliti
menarik kesimpulan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan
membaca deskriptif teks siswa kelas VIII SMP N 2 Welahan tahun ajaran 2013/2014
sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan menggunaka Course Review Horay.
Dengan demikian Peneliti menunjukkan bahwa guru dapat menggunakan Course
Review Horay dalam mengajar membaca, karena dengan Course Review Horay dapat
memberikan pemahaman membaca bagi siswa. Dan untuk peneliti berikutnya,
peneliti menyarankan untuk lebih kreatif untuk memodifikasi Course Review Horay
sebagai metode dalam pengajaran membaca.
