Greetings Marines, Corpsmen and Associates:

I hope this month’s edition finds you all well and warm. To begin, the Bel Air

Gun Show earlier this month was a successful event for the detachment; and I

want to thank all the members who worked the gun show.

At the last meeting I presented Marine Kris

Scarborough with the MCL Distinguished Service

Medal upon completion of his combat tour in

support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I wish

to thank him again for a job well done!

We are coming to that time of year when we will

choose our officers for the next year. As such, we

formed a nomination committee at the January

meeting. If you are interested in running for an officer position, or if there is

someone you’d like to see as an officer, come to the meeting and submit their

name. The only requirement for nomination is that he or she be a member in

good standing and current on dues. The positions up for election are the

Commandant, Sr. Vice Commandant, Jr. Vice Commandant and Judge

Advocate.

Your support is what makes this detachment work so well. I look forward to

seeing you all this month at our next meeting.

THE LASHUP

From the Sr. Vice Commandant

The Bel Air Gun Show we participated in was a big success for us in two ways.

We were awarded a trophy for best overall display at the show. The trophy is

now in our display cabinet at the VFW. The second success was we sold $1300

worth of Mauser rifle raffle tickets. Thanks to Marines Benson, Wlock, Beavers,

Kaufman, Dietrich, Franz, Romain, Reeling and Ken Phillips for working the

show.

It is time to mark your calendar. The detachment has set Saturday, 12 May as

our next Bull Roast/Shrimp Feast. Start now and get a group together and plan

to attend this fund raiser.

If you are interested in helping to plan for our detachment’s 10th anniversary

celebration contact Marine Warns at 410-804-6955.

Semper Fi Fellow Marines, Corpsmen, and Associates,

First, I would like to take this opportunity to

welcome Marine Owen A. McNiff, Associate Brian

Ticha, and Associate Bob Schaffer our newest

members. Owen entered the Marine Corps in

1977 and was released from active duty in 1981.

Owen’s MOS was 6124, Helicopter Power Plants

Mechanic, T-63. Brian and Bob were recruited by

Marine Jeff Beavers. Welcome aboard Owen,

Brian and Bob.

Our Toys for Tots program had an audit done this year by the foundation

and we did very well. The audit team counted every toy in the warehouse

and came up with a total of 6,452 toys left over from this years collection.

This is not a bad thing as the toys we have left over gives us a jump on the

school and church request for next year. As you know, the schools need to

be completed before they close for the Christmas holidays.

This year I am planning to catch up on some detachment activities I sort of

put on the back burner such as getting our sales tax exemption approved

and working on some trips to the National Museum of the Marine Corps and

Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Lejeune. We will also be working on

our annual picnic and the trailer for the parades. All in all it looks like a

very busy year shaping.

We will also be helping out at the Bel Air First Fridays and the Barbecue

Bash. Hopefully we will be able to set up one of our tents this year to

showcase the detachment’s community involvement. All we need is help

manning them. Thanks to all that helped with making last year such a

great success.

Gene Wlock

PAGE 7 NEWSLETTER OF THE HARFORD COUNTY DETACHMENT, MARINE CORPS

2 February 1944: The 4th Marine Division, as part of

the first assault on islands controlled by the Japanese

before the start of World War II, captured Namur and

eight other islands in the Kwajalein Atoll.

6 February 1968: Two reduced Marine battalions, the

1st Battalion, 1st Marines with two companies, and 2d

Battalion, 5th Marines with three, recaptured Hue's

hospital, jail, and provincial headquarters. It would

take three more weeks of intense house to house

fighting, and nearly a thousand Marines killed and

wounded, before the imperial city was secured.

11 February 1922: BGen John H. Russell was

appointed U.S. High Commissioner and personal

representative of the President to the government of

Haiti. This nine-year assignment placed this future

Commandant in supreme command of both the

occupying American force and the Haitian

Gendarmerie.

15 February 1998: One hundred years ago this date,

28 Marines and 232 seamen lost their lives when the

battleship Maine was mysteriously sunk by an

explosion in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Though no

definitive evidence linked the Spanish with the sinking,

the cry went up, "Remember the Maine!", and by late

April the U.S. and Spain were at war.

23 February 1945: Four days after the initial

landings on Iwo Jima, 1stLt Harold G. Schrier led 40

men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, up

Mt. Suribachi to secure the crest and raise the small

American flag that battalion commander LtCol

Chandler Johnson had given Schrier. Within an hour,

the patrol reached the rim of the crater. After a short

fire-fight with Japanese defenders emerging from

several caves, the small American flag was attached to

an iron pipe and raised over the island.

24 February 1991: The I Marine Expeditionary Force

and coalition forces began a ground assault on Iraqi

defenses in the final chapter of Operation Desert Storm.

The 1st and 2d Marine Divisions stormed into the teeth

of Iraqi defenses while heavily armored allied forces

attacked the Iraqi defenses in Iraq from behind. In 100

hours, U.S. and allied forces defeated the Iraqi Army.

28 February 1991: Operation Desert Storm ended

when the cease- fire declared by President George Bush

went into effect. I Marine Expeditionary Force has a

strength of more than 92,000 making Operation Desert

Storm the largest Marine Corps operation in history .A

total of 24 Marines were killed in action during the Gulf

War.

This Month in Marine Corps

History

“To the shores of Tripoli” - a lyric from “The

Marines’ Hymn” - and the use of the Mameluke

sword by Marines both stem from the incredible

exploits of Lieutenant Presley Neville O’Bannon

in the War of the Barbary Pirates in North

Africa. In late 1804 William Eaton, U.S. Navy

Agent for the Barbary Regencies under President

Thomas Jefferson, selected O’Bannon to lead a

special Navy-Marine expedition from Egypt to

capture Derna, Tripoli; return exiled ruler

Hamet Karamanli to the throne; and liberate the

captured crew of the USS Philadelphia, which

had run aground in the harbor. In March 1805

O’Bannon and his handful of Marines—plus a

motley group of 300 tribesmen and 100 camels—

traveled from Alexandria to Derna across 600

miles of coastal desert. Upon reaching the

target, they took the city in a coordinated land

and sea attack, ended the war, and freed the

imprisoned U.S. Navy crew. In gratitude, Pasha

Hamet presented O’Bannon with a Mameluke

scimitar, upon which the present-day Marine

officer’s sword is modeled.

The “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program is a viable

way for us to show our support to the deployed

troops. We collected 245 phones this past month.

To date and since June 2005, the detachment has

collected over 11,935 cell phones. These phones

are sent to a collection point and exchanged for

“Telephone Calling Cards” which are then sent

overseas to our deployed troops. This enables

them to call family and friends at no cost to them.

If you have collected any phone donations please

be sure to bring them to our next meeting.
