With the second year students
who took the National Achieve-
ment Test (NAT) last school
year, TNHS garnered high
mean score that ranks the
school number two among the
schools belonging in the sec-
ond legislative district.
In the citywide ranking, TNHS
ranked top three.
“The review classes that we
conducted with the students
really paid off,” said Mrs. Psy-
che Cambo, a second year
level class adviser.
Miss Magdalena Cachero,
principal of TNHS added, “I am
very thankful that the entire
Tablon community is suppor-
tive to the school‟s undertak-
ing for the NAT.”
Miss Cachero received a cer-
tificate of recognition for the
said accomplishment from the
DepED Division Office last July
26 at Marco Hotel, this city.

Mr. Ray Butch Mahinay, a Phys-
ics teacher in TNHS, was
awarded first place (Diamond
Award) for oral research pres-
entation during the Asian Con-
ference for Academic Journals
and Higher Education Re-
search held at Pryce Plaza, this
city last August 17-20, 2011.
His study is about the nontradi-
tional science beliefs of 92
Cagayan de Oro City public
high school teachers as corre-
lates to their teaching prac-
tices. Also in the study are the
teaching constraints of the said
teachers.
The research confab was initi-
ated by the International Asso-
ciation for Multi-Disciplinary
Research (IAMURE) and Liceo
de Cagayan University.
“It was surprising experience
for me as a budding re-
searcher to get first place than
my co-presenters who are
university professors seasoned
already in this kind of activ-
ity ,” said Mr. Mahinay. ®

ties and the checking of papers all in daily
basis are challenging. It might not be no-
ticeable but inadvertently, these efforts
sharpen our craft as teachers.
For these two changes the oddity is this: it
seems hard to combine UBD and DLP. Al-
though I am not saying it is impossible, but
imagine the bi-layer instructional structure
that teachers must keep in mind all the
time.
I am not sure of what I am trying to drive at.
Maybe possible options for simplification
of things? Or the teachers‟ academic free-
dom? Or plain reminder to regain focus
and drop extraneous things?
Nah, I remember the question: with the
circus of changes we are experiencing
now, are we moving forward? ®
With all the changes introduced to DepEd,
did we feel moving forward?
Let me cite two changes:
The first change is the shift of Basic Educa-
tion Curriculum (BEC) to Secondary Edu-
cation Curriculum (SEC). This is „standard‟
for they said the curriculum must be
changed every three school years.
The Understanding by Design learning
method by Wiggins and McTighe is the
main framework of SEC. In its two years of
gradual shift, I personally cannot see sig-
nificant changes in students‟ achievement
in NAT.
The UBD which is done in four stages is
good for it can enhance students‟ mastery
to the competencies. But given the 48 non-
negotiable days and the long set of compe-
tencies, we know we cannot be efficient.
The second change is the Dynamic Learn-
ing Program (DLP) which is a brave move
because it is only in DepEd Cagayan de
Oro City. It is a make or break attempt with
all the other divisions expectant of the re-
sults by the end of the school year.
DLP is a strategic learning design concep-
tualized by the Bernido couple, both physi-
cists and UP professors.
When I attended the three-day training
with the Bernidos, I said this is it. Every-
thing in DLP makes sense. The 80-20 para-
digm favoring student work to plain
teacher-centeredness is strategically ideal.
What is surprising for me, DLP entails
many works for teachers in the back-
ground. The preparation of student activi-

movement. Sensible that bulldoz-
ers can never be fast.
Even in psychology, one has to
clear up the heaviness of emo-
tions so he or she can have the
healed “self” and move on with
life.
So the idea is clear: ditch the ex-
cess baggage. To win, to reach
the top, to be fast, and to have
renewed image, one has to de-
cide. ®
It is the rule-of-thumb in travel-
ling that one must keep things
light so there is lesser hassle in
mobility and of course, in paying
excess fees.
An analogy can be applied to or-
ganizations or any physical entity
when aiming a destination.
For instance, a battle team must
be composed of best soldiers for
a sure win. Weaklings are placed
in queue because team captains
cannot compromise victory for a
lack of strength.
In simple situations like in an ele-
vator, when the people inside
reaches the maximum capacity,
one or two has to step out.
Science can firm up the point:
acceleration is always inversely
proportional to mass. So the
lighter the object, the faster the

Effective SY 2011-2012, TNHS offers agri-
culture classes to all year levels in line with
DepEd Memo 293, s.2007 that implements
the Gulayan sa Paaralan to public high
schools.
Starting last June, more than 60 students
sowed different plant varieties such as
pechay, okra, squash, eggplant, string
beans, kangkong, onion, among others.
The land area in-between first year and
fourth year buildings were utilized for
plantation.
Agriculture class coordinators are Mrs.
Concepcion Eduria, Mr. Richard Licayan
and Mrs. Nancy Cairel.
Feeding program of the school was re-
vived using the harvests as main food in-
gredients. ®
TNHS studes attend local, nat’l leadership seminars
“The entire Baguio experience is enriching
for me because the seminar taught me
many things,” said Manili. ®
Student Supreme Government (SSG) offi-
cers attended many local and national
leadership seminars for this school year.
TNHS leaders joined the Division Leader-
ship Training for Student Government Offi-
cers by DepEd‟s Center for Students Exra-
Curricular Activities (CSCA) through Di-
rector Joey Pelaez last September 9-11.
In another event last Sept 26, TNHS leaders
were invited to a leadership seminar at
Pilgrim Christian College auditorium spon-
sored by the host institution.
Most recent is the national leadership
training at Teachers‟ Camp, Baguio City
last Nov 4-8 where SSG President Aileen
Mae Manili and Evann BJ Mendonza at-
tended, together with Mr. Richard Licayan,
SSG adviser and Ms. Magdalena Cachero,
school principal.

Teachers of TNHS with the other national
high schools of Cagayan de Oro City con-
vened for the orientation of Dynamic
Learning Program (DLP) at XU Gym, April
this year.
DepEd-Cagayan de Oro through the lead-
ership of Dr. Myrna Motoomull, the schools
division superintendent, will implement
the DLP across all subjects this school year.
It is the aim of the city division to raise the
national achievement test results as an
indicator of active learning inside the
classroom.
In the orientation, Dr. Christopher
Bernido and Dr. Marivic Bernido, couple
and proponents of DLP, shared about the
significant results of their learning
method at Central Visayas Institure
Foundation in Jagna, Bohol.
On the other hand, Mr. Ray Butch Mahi-
nay, underwent a three-day training-
seminar on Learning Physics as One
Nation (LPON) with the Bernidos also at
XU.

Luigi Orinay and Pinky Sabellita, sopho-
more students of TNHS, grabbed champ
titles in the dance sports event during the
East II District Meet Eliminations at Agusan
National High School, Cagayan de Oro City
last July 2011.
Three pairs joined the competition for the
said category dancing rhumba, tango,
swing and salsa but only Orinay and Sabel-
lita got the judges‟ decision.
It was almost a default win for TNHS be-
cause the other entries came in late. In the
aim to select the best pair to represent the
East district, they were allowed to per-
formed. Even the chance, Orinay and Sa-
bellita still emerged the winning pair.
TNHS represented the East schools in the
Second Legislative District Dance Sports
Contest held at Limketkai Atrium last Au-
gust 2011.
Orinay and Sabellita made it to Top 5
among nine pairs. ®

TNHS whips dance sports title in East district elims
By Vanessa Abellanosa
When a contender from TNHS performed a
gymnastics routine during the East II Dis-
trict Meet Eliminations at Agusan National
High School, everybody was awed.
Even the TNHS teachers and students
themselves were surprised for they do not
have the idea that Cynthia Lopoy is a win-
ner in the making already.
Cynthia is a first year student of TNHS, a
bright one. Nobody had an inkling of her
talent until her showdown that eventually
made her go to places.
Last October 2011, she represented the
East district at City Central School for the
DepEd gymnastics eliminations and won.
At Cagayan de Oro Athletics Association
(COSAA) Meet, she represented the public
schools at Liceo de Cagayan University
High School.
Cynthia idolized a Russian gymnast Elena
Zamolodchikova and hoped to be at par
with her when she grows up.
She started at Grade 3 when she is a silver
medalist in the Famous Milo Olympics. ®

The seniors came up with most wins among
the different sports so they were declared
as champions for the Sports Fest 2011 held
last October 21-22, 2011 at the school
grounds.
Four teams representing each year level
fought for ball games, track events, dance
sports, cheerdance and Miss Sports Fest.
