Welcome
Welcome to The Eastwood School Sports Project 2011
Press Pack The Eastwood School are proud to announce the construction of state of the art sports
facilities on the school site in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.
We are a specialist sports college and the hub for the school sports partnership for Southend-
on-Sea West. We have leading edge status and the latest Ofsted report recognised that our
students excel in physical education and that 100% of students achieved GCSE grade C or
above and 41% achieved the highest A* or A grades.
The school is also recognised locally, regionally and nationally for its performance and major
achievements within a wide range of sporting areas. The school regularly competes in
national competitions and the school is identified by NGB‟s as a leading practitioner.

Vision:
To provide a first-class facility that will give opportunities for the local community to increase participation in athletics and football improving healthy living.
To give elite athletes the chance to further their career having facilities on their door step and
producing stars of the future.
Providing Southend with competitive facilities that compete with national facilities, putting
Southend on the map for sport.
Benefits:
Significantly improved access to athletic activity for pupils within the school or
associated with the sports hub, including those with physical disabilities.
The creation of opportunities to improve training activity for elite athletes from local
schools, community clubs and county talent schemes.
Risk of injury to gifted and talented athletes, when performing near their limits, greatly
reduced by the use of appropriate level surfaces.
In light of the upcoming London Olympics 2012, interest and demand for these facilities
is anticipated to increase significantly. Through access to a Mondo track the community
will have the opportunity to use the same track as used at the Beijing and forthcoming
London Olympic games.
Opportunity to cater for already existing Gifted and Talented workshops in Southend
West Sports Partnership with ex-Olympic athletes at one venue thus decreasing
transport costs and increasing access pathways for the local community.
The development of a perimeter fitness trail improves the access and opportunity for
students to engage in activities linked with the schools promotion of healthy lifestyles.

State-of-the-Art Facilities
Proposed Facilities:
UKA/IAAF compliant six lane, 400m Mondo surface running track
Full-sized FIFA standard football pitch
Pole-vault
Hammer Net
High Jump
Mondo surface is a highly specialised and engineered material that was first installed
at the Valencia World Indoor Championship and more recently at the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games. At both events world records were broken with 118 world records
broken at the Beijing Paralympic Games.
The surface is engineered to return the maximum level of energy from the surface to
the athlete and also reduces rolling resistance of the surface for wheelchair athletes.
The softness of the surface protects athletes from stress injuries and significantly aids
performance.

London 2012 Olympics
Bringing the Olympics to Southend
We are currently working with the London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee to enable
international athletes to use our facilities to train for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic
Games.
International delegates from the Maldives, Sri Lanka
and the Philippines have toured the school and we are
proud to say that we will be the training ground for the
Maldivian Paralympic Athletic Team.
Our involvement within the Olympics is a significant
sign of our commitment to raising the profile of sports
within Southend and our dedication to increasing
pathways into sport and improving healthy living.
