Time to Let Go of the Back of the Bike I’ve always known that at some point

I would have to let go, but walking away from my leadership position at JobTrain is hard. Timing is important in life, and I understand the wisdom of not waiting too long. I’ve led JobTrain through dicey times. We’ve grown stronger and smarter together. At this point, JobTrain is vibrant, energetic and full of promise. It’s time to

let go of the back of the bike. And when I do, I’m confident that this organization will not only remain upright and travel in the right direction, but that they might go on to win the Tour de France. I’ll take the advice of Dr. Seuss and not cry because it’s over, but smile because it happened. How lucky I have been!

I joined OICW/JobTrain as a GED teacher in 1973. Six years later I became an inexperienced Executive Director trying desperately to save our program from closing. Luckily we had a team of dedicated staff who cared as much as I did. We made extraordinary efforts and extraordinary friends – friends with the power to save us. Paul Cook, then Chairman and CEO of Raychem Corporation, gave us $6,000 a month for a year, challenged us to put our house in order, and provided technical assistance so we could succeed. His belief in us was even more compelling than the grant. How could we let Mr. Cook down?

Over the last several decades, I’ve never had enough hours in the day, or enough days in the week -- but I’ve had the time of my life! I relish our triumphs: Breakfast of Champions, special programs for the most-in-need, cutting edge training, purchasing our building, becoming accredited. But now as I prepare to leave, I find that I’m not thinking about those accomplishments. It’s not this program or that award. It’s the PEOPLE. The trainees I have come to know and love who courageously turned their lives around. JobTrain staff, forever holding out a helping hand. And all of you.

I find peace knowing that while my connection with JobTrain will change, it will never be gone. When I leave, I will take part of JobTrain with me in my heart and I will leave part of myself behind.

Sharon Williams Passes JobTrain Leadership TorchSharon Williams, JobTrain’s long-time Executive

Director, will step away from her position in late spring or early summer. A reception and dinner will be held at the Four Seasons Silicon Valley in East Palo Alto on March 9 to celebrate Sharon’s leadership, to raise funds for her legacy to JobTrain, and to underwrite leadership transition expenses.

Sharon joined JobTrain as a GED teacher in 1973 and became Director of Development in 1978. She took the helm as Executive Director in 1979. During her thirty plus years in JobTrain’s top spot, Sharon and her team transformed a beleaguered nonprofit into a premier job training and placement institution. Major accomplishments include the purchase and renovation of a 31,000 square foot training facility; accreditation through Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); creation of cutting edge training; and a diverse funding base that includes support from prestigious Silicon Valley leaders.

Sharon’s most valuable contribution to JobTrain is perhaps the most difficult to define. Often referred to as JobTrain’s “secret sauce”, it is the upbeat and energetic spirit that permeates the organization. “We believe in the potential of every person who comes to us,” says Sharon, “and that helps them believe in themselves. Once they know they can succeed, the challenge is nearly won.” JobTrain currently helps 8,000 people each year, 600 of them through full-time vocational training. At least 85% of those who enroll complete their training; 75% are placed in jobs; and 12 months after placement, 84% are still working.

Vocational training skills constitute one important aspect of a multi-faceted approach to success. “Vocational skills prepare our graduates for employment. These skills get them hired and help them launch careers,” says Sharon. “But their life skills, their attitudes and habits, will determine long-

term life success and deeper happiness.” Life skills are modeled by JobTrain staff and are incorporated into every trainee’s daily experience at JobTrain; but life skills are also taught as a stand-alone course.

“Ironically,” says Sharon, “this vital aspect of training is often perceived as an “extra” and is at risk when funding limitations dictate cutbacks. Life skills are an essential ingredient in our formula for success. My legacy will be to assure the continuation of life skills training in perpetuity.”

Executive Director Sharon Williams rings the JobTrain Success Bell.

Life Skills training is central to achieving long-term success. This is where trainees learn the values, behaviors and habits that will propel them forward in life. Life Skills will instill the ethic of hard work, dependability, initiative and integrity. It will inspire trainees to achieve balance and perspective, and to become enthusiastic participants in life.

Former Board Chair Launches Life Skills Boot CampVenture capitalist and former

JobTrain board chairman Russell Pyne launched a powerful Life Skills Boot Camp at JobTrain last month. The twenty-session program teaches practical techniques for achieving success, including goal setting, conflict resolution, personal budgeting and anger management. The Boot Camp is fully enrolled with twenty fully engaged students.

Russell developed the curriculum with JobTrain student Alfred Banks. “The whole mission of the boot camp is to level the playing field. Some people have the benefit of growing up being mentored by parents, teachers

and bosses. Others have no positive role models. Alfred and I tried to focus on the basic life skills you need to be prepared for the working world,” said Russell.

Graduates of the boot camp will be well-equipped to handle

real-world challenges that erupt when work and personal lives collide. Every student will create a Life Plan using PowerPoint and will be on an upward trajectory toward achieving a meaningful and purposeful life.

The best teachers are generally those who lead by personal example and experience. Before coming to JobTrain and

helping others transform their lives, John Asenso knew what it was like to have dreams, and the pangs of not having the resources to pursue them.

Approximately thirty years ago, when John was a student at Carlmont High School, he received an opportunity that changed his life. He was selected by Raychem Corporation to receive a full college scholarship. Raychem Chairman and CEO Paul Cook presented John with the award.

The scholarship made it possible for John to attend UC Davis where he majored in Sociology Law & Society. He applied his studies in an effort to address problems in his community of East Palo Alto. After a twenty-year career with

the Department of Corrections, John joined the JobTrain staff to help people returning from incarceration transform their lives.

Paul Cook is a long-time supporter of JobTrain and serves as Chairman of JobTrain’s Strategic Advisory Committee. John and Paul reconnected for the first time at JobTrain’s Winter Wonderland event in December. John thanked Paul for granting him the opportunity to pursue his dreams and for helping thousands of others at JobTrain do the same because of his support.

“It was Raychem’s intent to train and educate people so that our high technology businesses could be supported by the local community,” said Paul. “John is a wonderful example.”

Paul Cook and John Asenso reunited after 30 years.

JobTrain Employee’s Life Changed by Raychem Scholarship

Thanks to JobTrain’s generous donors, our Holiday Campaign is close to reaching its goal of $850,000. We are especially grateful to the community leaders who provided matching funds that inspired others to give: John and Tashia Morgridge, Morgan Family Foundation, Bill Edwards, John and Cynthia Lovewell, Dick and Faith Duhring, and the JobTrain Board of Directors. Another big boost to the campaign was a special message from 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh encouraging JobTrain support.

Stanford University Design Thinking Class Launches Special Project

JobTrain is participating in a special project with Stanford University’s d.school. The d.school uses a design approach to thinking and problem solving. Design-thinking students will try a new approach to finding solutions to old problems, such as poverty, family stability and homelessness. Tipping Point was instrumental in bringing members of their grantee community to the table to participate in this innovative course. Tipping Point Community is based on the Robin Hood Foundation model in New York and is dedicated to eliminating poverty.

Stanford launched this experimental project on Tuesday, January 8, when d.school students from Stanford joined JobTrain students and staff for a design challenge. More than 70 Stanford and JobTrain students paired up for the design assignment.

The first step consisted of Stanford and JobTrain participants conducting personal interviews with one another that could shed light on how to design a perfect wallet, customized to meet their partner’s specific needs.

Next, participants drew the wallet – and after a brief discussion with his or her partner, everyone built a prototype from paper, tape, post-it notes, cards, markers and pipe cleaners. Each team had the opportunity to share their prototype with the group.

This first experience was a simple exposure to design-focused thinking. It was stimulating and fun.

Special thanks to our partners at Stanford: Erica Estrada-Liou, Steve Hilton, Sarah Stein Greenberg and Sally Madsen for organizing and facilitating the class. And many thanks to Tipping Point Community for including JobTrain in the experiment.

JobTrain employee C2 Vea and his Stanford d.school partner, Stephen Lee, show off their “Designer” wallets.

Facebook + JobTrain + Mouse Squad = Empowering Youth through Technology

Facebook’s new foundation gave a total of $200,000 to 42 non-profits in Menlo Park and East Palo Alto in early January of this year. JobTrain received $4,500 to implement Mouse Squad at our facility. Mouse Squad of California Student Tech Leadership is an innovative youth development organization that empowers students to provide technology leadership and support in their schools and communities.

Mouse Squad provides youth with access to technology-based opportunities intended to motivate students to succeed in today’s information driven society. It is a perfect contemporary component to JobTrain’s SASSY (School After School for Successful Youth) program. Participants will be eligible to earn up to 12 elective high school credits for the course.

Mouse Squad will launch at JobTrain in February. To learn more about how to enroll in JobTrain’s exciting joint venture with MOUSE Squad of California, please contact JobTrain’s Youth Services Coordinator Sasha Gourevitch at [email protected] or 650.330.6452.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of serving others is helping individuals reach their potential. JobTrain helps thousands of men and women each year discover their strengths and teaches them how to pursue their dreams.

DaViD iBaRRa graduated from JobTrain’s Solar Photovoltaic class in summer 2012. He is now in his second quarter at Foothill College, studying computer science. David hopes to transfer to Stanford or UC Berkeley and ultimately work as an engineer at Facebook. “I never attended city council meetings, spoke publically

or knew my real worth until I came to JobTrain,” said David. “Their staff opened my eyes and now I see a bright future ahead for my son and myself. Thank you, JobTrain.”

zaHia OSSEiraN is a single mother of three and a 2012 JobTrain graduate. The skills she learned at JobTrain and her multilingual abilities helped her land a position as a contracted employee at Apple in their SIRI division.

JobTrain Success Story!

Santa and his helpers paid an early visit to JobTrain on December 19 when he distributed gifts to children whose unemployed parents are pursuing vocational training and employment assistance.

Parents who could not afford the added expense of the holidays were relieved and appreciative. The children were thrilled that their Holiday Wish Lists were fulfilled. Children’s wish lists were granted by donations from community partners and

JobTrain’s Board of Directors. Hundreds of gifts and toys were distributed to struggling families.

JobTrain’s corporate supporters were key to Winter Wonderland’s success. TE connectivity, through a generous giving campaign led by TE’s Network Computer Support Manager Roz Thomas, satisfied most of JobTrain children’s wishes. She also donated $5,000 at the Winter Wonderland event to support JobTrain programs.

Hewlett-Packard and JobTrain’s board of directors ensured that all JobTrain children had their Holiday wishes granted. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to day-of festivities and gifts: San Mateo Credit Union, The Four Seasons Hotel, Slingshot connections, Bay network, and Crescent alliance Group. And many thanks to Old Saint Nick for putting in a full day at JobTrain!

JobTrain is seeking a volunteer instructor to teach Spanish to non-Spanish speakers. We could also benefit from volunteers in nearly every department, but we especially need tutors to assist students with gED preparation and Office Skills. GED tutors will primarily teach math, reading and writing skills. Office Skills volunteers will help students with Microsoft software programs, proofreading and editing. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Eric Forgaard at 650.330.6416 or [email protected]

Volunteer Opportunities!

Sharon Williams will be honored at a reception and dinner at the Four Seasons Silicon Valley in East Palo alto on Saturday, March 9. The hosted reception will begin at 6:00 with dinner at 7:00. Sponsorship opportunities are available at the $25,000, $10,000, $5,000 and $1,000 levels. Individual tickets may be purchased for $250. Culinary Students Lead Workshop for SeniorsOn January 14, Culinary Art students from

JobTrain volunteered their time and talents to prepare tasty and nutritious meals for seniors residing at The Sheridan in Palo alto. Sheridan resident Loie Johnson expressed delight with JobTrain students for teaching her and fellow residents how to prepare traditional dishes with a creative and healthier twist. “If I could afford it, I’d hire JobTrain students to cook for me every single day. The experience was just wonderful,” said Loie.

Led by JobTrain Culinary Arts student Sean Swihart, residents enjoyed an entrée of baked salmon and side dishes of creamy squash risotto, coleslaw and candied carrots. The meal concluded with a delicious dessert of vanilla ice cream drizzled

with olive oil and sea salt.

The Sheridan residents loved the culinary workshop, enjoyed the food, and emphatically invited the JobTrain chefs to return next month.

Teaching the elderly how to creatively prepare tasty meals while living on a fixed income has been a dream of student chef Sean Swihart.

“It was really important to me, personally, to teach seniors how to cook healthily, quickly and conveniently - with ingredients they have ready access to,” said Chef Sean.

“I grew up in Italy where we were taught that the table is family - it is community. Thank you for being here for us, for being our family and building our community,” said Sheridan resident Candy.
