TRANSCRIPT
I would like to thank you for your support
this year during my time as Governor. The
year has certainly flown by, it’s hard to
believe October will be soon be here. To
the District Executive Board, Governor’s
Cabinet and all who participated in the
Fall and Spring meetings as well as the
International Convention and to those
who will continue their support by
attending the District Convention you are
a wonderful group of Civitan’s. You truly
have “Made a Difference in the World” this year. It has
been a great honor for me to serve as your Valley District
Governor 2018-2019.
Shela Hopkins was installed as your new Governor for the
2019-2020 year during the International Convention in
Greenville, South Carolina. Please continue your support
for her. Patsy Perkel was installed as International
President for 2019 and 2020. Congratulations to both
ladies.
Congratulations to Valley District’s Chuck Weir and Rose
Merriwether for winning the 2017-18 North American In-
ternational Awards for (1st place for best website and 2nd
place for best newsletter).
The theme for the next several years Champions of
Service was introduced. The new branding theme will
continue as Achievers, Believers, Leaders and Dreamers.
One item of business at the convention was Renew by
2022. It’s a conscious, internal effort of Civitan
International to “renew” the organization to center on
increasing its viability over the next three years and
ensuring its sustainability for years to come.
Don’t forget if your incoming officers for the 2020 year
have not signed up for officer training they need to do so
as soon as possible. Do Not Wait Until it is too late. All
officers must be trained in order for your club to be
certified. Repeating officers as well as new and those who
served in the position before must have this training.
Information can be found at https://civitan.org/training/.
If you have not returned your Club Officer form’s, please
do so asap. A copy needs to be sent to
[email protected] as well as a copy to Governor-Elect
Shela Hopkins.

The cost of printing and mailing out the newsletters has gone up
each year and we can no longer afford to continue to send out
the paper newsletters. This is the last newsletter that will be
mailed out.
The options available for our Civitan members are to continue to
look at the newsletter online at https://
www.valleydistrictcivitan.com/voice-of-the-valley and I will
continue to mail out the link each quarter.
Some members may not be getting my emails with the link.
Please send me your email address and I will add you to the

If you have any older members in your club that may not have
emails. Please be a good Civitan club and print out a copy for
those members wanting a copy.

Mission Statement
The worldwide mission of
Civitan International is to build
good citizenship by providing a
volunteer organization of clubs
dedicated to serving individual
and community needs, with an
emphasis on helping people
with developmental disabilities.
Congratulations to our World
Citizenship Award winner and founder
of Bitty and Beau’s Coffee, Amy Wright!
Civitans,
I attended the International Convention in
Greenville, SC a few weeks ago. At the
convention a new initiative was
introduced and it is called Renew by
2022.
International is working on achieving
financial stability for the organization in the
next three years. It was announced that our
International headquarter building will be sold. For more
information visit https://civitan.org/renewby22/ where you’ll
find a letter from your fellow Civitan leaders, FAQs, and
several short testimonial videos
The new branding campaign, was revealed Champions of
Service. Over the next several years we will continue with this
campaign as Achievers, Believers, Leaders, and Dreamers.
Action kits and items are available in the Supply House.
With just a few months to go for the 2018-19 of Governor
Jimmy Jordan’s term looking at the Membership report we
started the year with 42 Active clubs but as of June we are
down to 41. In October of 2018 we had 1070 members and
that’s down to 1053. (-17) We still have a few months to
recruit more members.
This is my last article as Immediate Past Governor and I
would like to thank all Valley District Civitan clubs for their
support during my term of leadership these past three years.
All officers are now required to be trained each year,
regardless of how long they have served in a position.
Training for Presidents and President elects will be in
Nashville on August 17th and in Chattanooga on August 24.
There are also 2 remaining webinars you can go to

additional information.
Hello from White Bluff Civitan Club
We are a fairly new club having begun
March, 2017. We are sponsored by the
Dickson, Tennessee club. We are greatly
appreciative of them and their efforts to
get our club started. Our own member Dwight Ragsdale
was instrumental in getting our club off the ground.
We have accomplished many things. We have built four
wheel chair ramps, rebuilt a sign at Veterans Park in
White Bluff, landscaped a recently refurbished building
bought by the city, donated $800.00 to the Dickson
County Sheriffs Office Toy and Coat drive, held a
fireman appreciation dinner for the White Bluff and
Claylick Fire Departments, donated $1,100 to William
James Middle School for a new sign, donated $600 to
the Dickson YMCA to purchase 10 cots for use in cold
weather to house homeless families.
We were proud to honor another Creek Wood High
School Junior Civitan member with a $500 scholarship
this year. Her name is Koria Taliaferro and she will be
attending Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, TN.
Our April meeting was a Seek Meeting. We have added
4 new members since that meeting. Our current
membership is 37 people. We are on our way to being
an Honor Club.
We are proud to announce that we are joining in fund
raising for the non profit Mayson’s Place an inclusion
center to be located in White Bluff. Two of our members
Carl and Lonae Garton started this foundation is in
honor of their son Mayson, who passed away. We are
sponsoring at golf scramble for Mayson’s Place to be
held in August.

“The dearest thing in life to me is the inspiration which
urges me on to give the best that is in me to the “builders
of good citizenship,” and makes of it a labor of love.”
Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire, Founder of Civitan International
In 1974, Civitan became the first major
service club organization in America to
admit women to full membership. Another
milestone for service organizations
recorded in 1989 when Polly Mooney
became the first female leader of a major
service organization when she was elected
to serve as International President of
Civitan for the 1990-91 term.
Hello Fellow Civitans!
Well it’s that time of year – when one of our Junior Civitan years end and another begins. I would like to
express my deepest appreciation for your support of our program this year and to congratulate Junior Governor
Taylor Albertia on a very successful year! She was recognized as one of only two Distinguished Governors of
Excellence this year (the highest honor possible) and as a result, led our district to be recognized as an Honor
District of Distinction.
As we say good-bye to Taylor, we welcome our newest Junior Governor Isabella Sullivan. She and I have already
met and discussed plans for the upcoming year, but as always need your help making it successful. We have
many projects planned, but could use the following donations:
Acrylic paint Small paint brushes Fleece (for scarves or blanket) Large, smooth river rocks
Please bring donations to the next adult district meeting!
Always Civitan Happy,
Gena Albertia
Being Governor of the 2018-2019 Valley District Board has been such a blessing. Getting to share the year
with Marissa Lott and Bella Sullivan was a blast and we came up with lots of great ideas like the blessing
bags. However, we couldn’t be such an amazing district without our Chair, Gena Albertia. This year we all
grew as a board and as a family.
We had 18 Juniors attend International Convention (more than any other district) and the Valley District
won BIG! We took home the following awards:
I cannot wait to lead on the board once again this year! Thank you to everyone who made this year the best possible.
Always HAPPY!

Hello! I’m Isabella Sullivan and I am an upcoming senior at Clarksville High School in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Since I was elected as Governor of the Valley District for the 2019-2020 school year, I was given the incredible
opportunity to go to the Junior Civitan International Convention. At the convention, I met so many incredible
people and learned what it really means to be a Junior Civitan. My favorite parts of the convention were
Dance-A-Thon and learning about the CIRC.
As Governor, I hope to lead our district through a fun and service-filled year! I also hope to make the Valley
District an Honor District of Excellence, increase club membership, and inspire others to truly live by the
Junior Civitan creed. I couldn’t be any more excited for what this year has to offer!

It’s a Sizzling Summer! We are heading into the last quarter of the 2018/2019 year and Summer is a
great season for fundraising. It’s also a good time to seek out new businesses to place your candy and
coin boxes for the coming year. The Candy/ Coin Box Project is an important and successful program for our
clubs. Collections help to ensure that more services can be provided to the local communities and the
CIRC. Fundraising is a crucial part of Civitan International, and the Valley District is doing its part to help
support. However, we can always do a little bit more.
From October 2018 through June 2019, Valley District has contributed $9,981.73 to the Candy Box
Program (16 clubs participating), which is a decrease of $1,702.98 for the same time period last year.
Let us work to do better with our Candy Boxes!! Valley District has contributed a total of $397.67 to the
Coin Box Program (3 clubs participating), which is a decrease of $277.28 over the same time period last
year. Let’s work to do better with our Coin Boxes!
Valley District needs to make every effort to fulfill their contract promise and work to keep submitting collections to Civitan
International. Please keep in mind that 75% of candy box contributions and 50% of coin box contributions support the CIRC
in Birmingham, Alabama
Another way to support the CIRC is Civitans at the Helm. Civitans at the Helm is a recognition program to acknowledge club
and district support of Civitan International and its’ commitment to research. Clubs receive banner patches as recognition for
this support. Levels are as follows:
Helmsman - $10 per member Navigator - $25 per member
Captain - $50 per member Commodore - $75 per member
Admiral - $100 per member Admiral of the Fleet - $200 per member
Keep up the good work Valley District and thanks for all you do!!! And let’s end the 2018/2019 year with a huge increase in
contributions!!!
I hope you have been reading my articles for the 2018-2019 club year. Each quarter I have told you what
you need to know to enter the Awards & Honors Competition.
The presentation will be made at the September District Convention to be held at the Doubletree Inn in
Jackson, TN. The deadline has been extended until Thursday, August 15th all entries must be postmarked

Club members work tirelessly each year let’s honor them with the recognition they deserve for one of the below Individual

I know your club has had a project worthy of the Club Awards Recognition, it not that hard to enter especially if you have
followed the guidelines and kept the information needed as year progressed. With the extended deadline you have even
longer this year to get the letter to me.
Hope you will attend the District Convention Friday, September the 6th and Saturday, September 7th.

AWARDS & HONORS
Over a lifetime you meet people who come and go in your life, some never to hear from again. But
a few are constant, dependable and ready to assist you with any task.
Such a person was Mary Gill who could be counted on always.
Mary joined South Nashville Civitan in 1984 after seeing how active our club was in which her
husband, Fred had become active. Mary joined in wholeheartedly in every activity. She became the
secretary responsible for so much of our communication and stayed with it for over 30 years.
The only time she gave it up was to become president at one point. I remember returning as
president of the club just a few years ago and at the end of the year I met with Mary to go over our
year. She had all the records and helped us become an honor club once again. During the 90s at one point our club had
gotten down to just a few active members and it looked like the club would fold. Mary sent a colorful letter to each
member and put us all to shame for the careless attitude we had fallen into and fired us up once again.
South Nashville has never been a large club, but always active in all the ventures of the district. She was the key
participant in our involvement in Special Olympics each year. She provided a newsletter for each meeting of the club. She
was still our secretary until the end of her life a few weeks ago. I have before me a picture of 7 of us Civitans in front of
the finished wheelchair ramp in front of her home a couple of years ago. She was always so proud of that ramp and it
made it possible for her to continue living a full life.
She was the secretary of her church for 45 years - how dependable is that? Mary kept a positive attitude and cute smile
for all of us. We shall miss her dearly, but we are thankful that she brought her daughter, Debbie, into our club not long
ago to keep her heritage alive. We thank God for this dedicated servant of our club.

The Club held our Clergy Appreciation Dinner in May with a number
of local churches represented. Our Civitan member, retired
Marine Sergeant Major Len Koontz prepared the Fallen Comrades
Table. This table setting serves as a reminder that all of our
comrades could not be here today. It honors those who are
unaccounted for and for those who paid the supreme sacrifice
defending our country.
At our April and June bingo nights, the Joelton Civitan Club collected paper goods for
the Ronald McDonald House and school supplies for the teachers at our local middle
school.
In May, the Club held their semi-annual Community Clean-Up – always a great turnout
to help keep our community clean!!
Joelton Civitan Club members presented monetary
awards to (2) 8th grade students who displayed
leadership and good citizenship throughout their
school year
Club members participated in the Tennessee Special Olympics in
May
Another great year of onion sales for Humphreys Civitan Club culminated in the sale and delivery of 550
bags in record time. Club members presold 487 bags which were picked up on May 21 with the last
bag distributed on Monday, May 27.
President, James Schmidt (left) and President-Elect Jeff Keele (right) are shown manning our booth in
front of Waverly Tire on Main Street. Part of the proceeds from this sale are used to fund the
Humphreys County Civitan Scholarship which was presented to Leah Herndon of the Waverly Central
High School Jr. Civitan Club for 2018-2019. Leah and her parents, Todd and Rhonda, were our guests
at our monthly June meeting. Leah, WCHS Jr. Civitan Secretary for 2018-2019, shared her winning essay and talked
about plans for the future.

Tragedy struck one of our own. LaDonna Hamm, past District Governor and St. Bethlehem club
president, lost her son due to a motorcycle accident. Our sympathy goes out to her and Mike.
Our club officers for 2019-2020 are as follows: President, Forest Suddeath, President-Elect, Bill
Suddeath, Treasurer, Glenn Way, Secretary, Rose Merriwether, and Board Member, Mike Collins.
For programs in April and May we enjoyed two excellent speakers. Kristen Baker, with Goodwill, spoke
at our April meeting. Robert Webb, president of the Hopkinsville club, spoke at our Seek Meeting in
May.
About 9 of our members attended the Valley District meeting in Owensboro and 5 attended the International
Convention in Greensville, South Carolina. They are pictured in the first photo.
Several of our members packed boxes for the Montgomery County Community Action Agency, and our club prepared
greeting cards with a cheerful message to be given out to recipients of them.
A club social was held at Olive Gardens in June. Pictured are several in attendance. Our Rose Merriwether, and past
District Governor, received two honors for the Valley District at the International Convention. Her Voice of the Valley
won second place and she accepted the Valley District Website first place award for Chuck Weir. She is pictured with
Jimmy Jordan, the present Valley District Governor..

South Jackson Civitan members have been very busy for the past few months. In April, members sacked
lunches for participants in Area Special Olympics track and field event.. Over 200 students, teachers,
coaches, and volunteers were fed lunch at the University School of Jackson. Perfect weather, great food and
a good time was had by all!
Our ramp construction crew has built three ramps for community families recovering from surgeries. These
guys enjoy sharing their construction talents to help others. Ladies from the club provide lunch and snacks.
Two members of the 2019 graduating class from Southside High School were presented scholarships of $2000 from the
club to further their education.
Our annual Vidalia onion fundraiser was a great success! Our club sold and delivered 750 10lbs. bags of Vidalia onions. Our
club coordinates this project with the Henderson, Middleton, and Jackson clubs.
Enjoy your summer!
