SHS Employee Wellness Challenge
Spring is here and with a change of seasons, the dietitians at SHS want to challenge you to enhance your overall
wellness. This is NOT about losing weight, but rather about incorporating healthy lifestyle changes into each and
every day. It’s easier than you think and many of these things you may already do – so get your colleagues
together and win a prize for being healthy!!
What’s Involved?
Each person will keep track of their own accomplishments throughout the week (I have created a spreadsheet to
make it easy , if you are not computer savvy, you can print it out and keep track by hand, but if you are, the
spreadsheet is set up to total your points for you).
These are all things that we should be doing anyway. To see how easy this can be, here are the 10 items that you
can get points for:
Sleeping
Daily physical activity
Eating vegetables
Eating whole grains
Choosing low-fat milk and yogurt
Drinking water
Eating breakfast
Having one meatless day/week
Spending less time in front of the TV
Eating fish twice/week
Time Frame: 4 weeks, April 6 - May 3 (the challenge week is Monday - Sunday)
Teams: 4 people
Cost: FREE
Registration: Register by March 30th
Prizes: Awarded to the top three teams (Each person on the team will receive a City Market Gift Card - $30 for
first place, $20 for second place and $10 for third place).
Here’s what you need to do:
Form teams of 4, create a team name and elect a team captain.
If you do not have a team, email Laura White, RDN ([email protected]) and she will find one for you .
Team captain will register the team by emailing or faxing Laura the registration form.
Team members will keep track of their own points and submit them to their team captain at the end of the
week.
Team captain will tabulate team point total and email team results to Laura by Tuesdays at 12 noon.
Laura will tabulate results from all teams and send out a weekly email with the top team leaders.
Laura will tabulate results at the end and announce winners .
Thanks for participating! It’s going to be FUN!!! All tracking documents are available on the website at http://swhealth.org/hospital/#nutrition-education

SHS In the Know: We asked team members how they like to get active as we gear up for
the wellness Challenge!
Audrey Sanders loves to kickoff her day with a workout
video at home, ride her bike to work, walk the trail at lunch
work out at the rec, then ride home to finish off her day!
She loves to work out because it gives her energy and
makes her happy in general. You can find her hiking with
her family on the weekends!
Angel Kobel loves to stay active with her
grandkids. They spend time together riding
bikes, running, playing, and playing football
at the parks in Cortez and Dolores.
Laura White, registered dietitian and nutritionist and
wellness Challenge Coordinator is excited to kick off
the program. There were over 400 participants in the
last challenge she created and the employees had a
great time! Laura enjoys running down the middle of
the highway to stay active and keeping drivers on
their toes.
Liz Sellers likes to start her day at 5am
with a great workout at the gym or a fun
video like P90X, or yoga. She gets in a
run with her Great Dane when the
weather is nice. She loves to hike in
McElmo Canyon or the mountains.
Jamie Gleason-Hightower likes to work
out at the Cortez Rec Center.
Erin Lykes stays active by chasing her
kids around at their many sporting ac-
tivities and keeping her house in great
shape!
Thank You for
your
participation

SHS In the Know: Getting to Wound Care
Wound Care at Southwest Health System is a comprehensive and cost-effective
approach to increase the rate of healing in any type of patient with the goal of returning
patients to their quality of life. Benefits of visiting the Wound Care Center include
increase in rate of healing, preparing for surgical procedures, a team approach to
patient care, and consultation for patients and physicians. They also teach
self-management of wound care to patients and family members so they’re able to
participate in the healing process.
Wound care at Southwest Memorial Hospital is founded in evidence based approaches
and provided by licensed and certified professionals. Our approach is based on each
patient’s individual needs and we provide treatment designed to achieve the best
possible long term outcome, reduce the risk of re-injury to the wound, and sustain health
skin.
Wounds can be caused from a variety of disease processes such as diabetes, poor
circulation, trauma, pressure or burns and more.
Treatment options at the Southwest Memorial Hospital Wound Care Center include:
