• Over 40,000 fatalities, 2.7 million injuries each year, economic cost exceeding $230 billion

• Congestion estimated to cost the economy nearly $200 billion annually; the average rush-hour commuter spends nearly a full work week stuck in traffic

• 28% of greenhouse gases attributed to transportation• Estimated cost of needed infrastructure investment ranges

from $225 – $340 billion per year, current gas tax-based funding system insufficient to meet needs

Significant Transportation Challenges

What ITS Can Do to Help

• ITS technologies are available today that can:– Prevent accidents before they happen– Provide more effective incident, emergency response– Reduce traffic congestion and provide real-time traffic

and traveler information– reduce energy use and emissions– enable innovative financing including VMT user fees

• Next transportation bill must make better use of available technologies and innovative solutions
