DONOR SPOTLIGHT: WILLIAM P. SAVIERS

Can you tell me a bit about connection to Ohio University?

My mother was a school teacher and attended Ohio University in the 1930s. We moved to Belpre, Ohio, so OU was close and affordable. I participated in the Ohio Fellows program and spent my junior year in Berlin, Germany, doing background work for my honors thesis. After graduating in 1968, I was drafted and enlisted in the Army. After two years in Vietnam, I attended law school at the University of Virginia and began a career in corporate law until I retired in 2004.

Why did you choose to support Ohio University?

As humans we derive a great deal of our meaning and value by enriching each other’s lives beyond our survival needs. I made a conscious decision to support higher education because I wanted to continue a tradition of challenging students. Ohio University has a history from its land grant days of challenging students and providing stimulus into the acquisition of knowledge.

Do you have any advice for those people who are considering making a gift to Ohio University?

Yes, I would urge them to consider that the power of one person can be exponential. Every member of an organization or group affects the other members. As I was taught in the Christian tradition, the present is the time when our interaction and concern will have impact on the future. Without willing hands to take up the task of encouraging and training future generations, the joy and vibrancy that was entrusted to us may be dimmed for those who follow.

MAkING A DIFFERENCE: HIGH FLYER GIVES bACk TO OHIO UNIVERSITY

Lt. Col. Mike Jackson, BSEd ’68 Co-Chair, The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education Campaign Committee National Chairman, Operation Welcome Home

Lt. Col. Michael Jackson, USAF (Ret) has a history of service to Ohio University that began more than three decades ago. Jackson, who met his wife Karen (BSEd ’69) on OHIO’s campus, volunteered to lead The Patton College Campaign Committee because he believes in the promise of an Ohio University education. “The educational experience at Ohio University is like no other,” said Jackson. “My wife Karen, daughter Katie, BA ’07, and I appreciate the opportunities the university opened for us. OU prepared me for many roles in my life including pilot, officer, teacher, businessman, and philanthropist.”

Jackson, who received a Medal of Merit from the Ohio University Alumni Association in 2007, served as a career Air Force pilot until 1991. During this time, he flew in 210 combat missions and received 21 military decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. Along with flying combat missions in Vietnam, Jackson was selected to develop a training program for Vietnamese pilots. His teaching skills followed him to instructor pilot and command positions stateside and, later, in a variety of private sector positions.

The Jackson family’s most recent gift to Ohio University provided for the establishment of the Mike and Karen Jackson Merit Scholarship, a gift they believe will extend far beyond the walls of McCracken Hall.

“The lasting impact that Karen and I can have on a student’s life is worth every penny,” said Jackson. “We love this university. As a Campaign volunteer, I look forward to helping other people find a way to leave a legacy at Ohio University.”
