The Principle of Outdoor LearningHere at Ackworth School, our aim is to educate our children as much as possible in the outdoors. Our aim is to build young people’s independence and self-esteem through experiencing the natural world.

Our Training ProgrammeTrainees will not only experience a very hands on, practical training day here in our very own Ackworth School grounds; they will also learn about the theory behind Outdoor Learning and the impact the Outdoor Learning has on a child’s Social, Physical, Intellectual, Communication, Emotional, and Spiritual Development (SPICES).

How do we develop this at Ackworth School?Pupils in our Junior School take part in activities such as:

Problem solvingTeam workFire lighting, cooking over a live fireUse of real life tools (such as a bow saw, sheath knife, loppers or bill hook)Den buldingPutting up tentsLearning different types of knotsArts and craftsActivities to develop imaginationLiteracy and Numeracy outdoors

Training days at Ackworth willl offer you a selection of the above activities and the pedagogy behind them.
