Extending the heart of Cambridge to the worldIn 2020, CISL pivoted to delivering a virtual Prince of Wales’s Business & Sustainability Programme, the first of its kind in its 26-year history. The programme has been redesigned specifically for an online audience, underpinned by a bespoke, interactive virtual classroom that provides a learning environment to explore concepts and networks with peers.

We continue to deliver seminars internationally in Cape Town, South Africa and Melbourne, Australia – subject to guidance from governments and the University of Cambridge. The Prince of Wales’s Business & Sustainability Programme also launches in Singapore in 2022.

Programme objectives Businesses can unlock significant commercial opportunities by helping to address social, economic and environmental challenges.

The Prince of Wales’s Business & Sustainability Programme focuses on the successful management of change.

It is designed to help businesses reconcile profitability and sustainability. Participants are encouraged to review their business models to set a vision for what success looks like in the future, and help create an enabling framework.

Interactive learning modelEach seminar takes place across three and a half days, or five half days for virtual learning, with approximately 35 senior executives. Participants begin their engagement in advance of the seminar through tailored conversations, a sustainable business survey and selected pre-reading.

The seminars encourage participants to test their assumptions and learn from peers whilst making the most of a unique residential or virtual learning environment and the experts in the room. Seminars use a combination of lectures, case-study presentations, group discussions, individual reflections, debates, networking and external activities. A series of lightly facilitated small-group conversations help participants reflect on their leadership journey, share challenges and co-create responses.

• The need for effective business leadership, in the context of global trends, such as food, water and energy security, social equity, consumption and the circular economy, supply chain resilience, sustainable finance and investment and climate change.

• The framework for sustainable outcomes, including the Sustainable Development Goals, the wider regulatory market and technological shifts and disruptions, and the business risks and opportunities they create.

• The case for a sustainable business approach, touching the organisational purpose, its role in working with customers, investors, and policymakers, and the commercial case for sustainability.

• The way to operationalise sustainability, setting strategies, exploring new business models, and building capacity to create shared value.

• The role of individual leadership, framing a vision for a sustainable business, the priorities for change and bringing others on board.

What our alumni say

A lifetime experience of packing your suitcase with the right content, network, inspiration and encouragement.

An incredible roller coaster ride through global warming, sustainability, inequality and what to do about it. The course provides you with many interesting perspectives and gives you tools to help you while testing your personal commitment to act.

A challenging, thought provoking and transformative programme that will help you to consider and to assess your organisation’s and your personal role in contributing to sustainable development.

7 The Prince of Wales’s Business & Sustainability Programme

CISL delivers an outstanding program to senior professionals and offers a great opportunity to network with peers.

The quality of the teaching and organisation of the event was exceptional. The content was inspirational, evidence based and practical. As a direct result of the course, I have identified a number of actions that I will take and which will strengthen my leadership and delivery.

The content, faculty, organisation and the cohort are all first rate. If there were any doubt about the urgency of issues facing leaders in both the private and the public sectors, this program quickly dispels it.

Our programmes are informed by the role that business, financial markets and government institutions can play to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are designed to shape the ambition and the capacity of these institutions to succeed commercially by driving change.

Rewiring the Economy is our ten-year plan aimed at business, government and finance leaders which lays the foundations for a sustainable economy and the delivery of the SDGs. A set of ten interconnected tasks are offered to guide the structural and cultural changes necessary to achieve a sustainable economy which rewardsbusinesses that deliver positive social and environmental outcomes.

‘The future we want, the leadership we need’: Rewiring Leadership As more businesses realise that they need to adjust their strategy to make progress in the context of a more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, they must find ways to develop leaders differently.

Today’s approaches to leadership development are simply not delivering the leadership capabilities required for long-term business success. Our work shows that some leading organisations are successfully rethinking their leadership development strategy to meet the changing environment, but many organisations are yet to recognise the scale of change required.

Organisations need a new form of leadership development which helps them to reframe their purpose, strategy, culture – even their fundamental approach to value creation.

Our experience developing leaders over 30 years shows that with the right learning culture and interventions we can enable employees and organisations to lead with purpose and high impact, delivering commercial performance through contributing positively to society and the environment.
