AMBULANCE NEWS

Pretty soon you will be bombarded with cycloneand flood advice from TV., radio andnewspaper. It is advisable to have at least 3days supplies on hand and an evacuation plan foryour property in times of disaster. We had a littlecyclone around Christmas and got the edge ofYasi this year - we have had our fair share in thepast 5 years but anything could happen. Onething is for sure there will be local flooding duringthe summer months. Some years Babinda ismarooned from every direction when the BruceHighway is cut meaning local supplies candwindle. Most people in this community areresilient and quite prepared but there are stillplenty that are not. Some things required includea battery operated radio and spare batteries, torch, candles, lighter, first aid kit, cooking gear, food, clean water. Don't forget your pets andmedications as well. During this time theemergency services will do their best to assistanyone in need but we do have ourlimitations. Start buying some tinned food andbatteries now. As soon as mother nature decidesto send her fury every Tom, Dick and Harry willbe going to the local shops to stock up - think likeBoy Scouts and be prepared. Some importantnumbers to remember are 000 for allemergencies. You can also contact

the ambulance on 13 12 33,

the police on 131 444 and

the SES on 132 500.

Until next time,

Keep Safe

Grab your piece of the next resources boomA series of new advertisements will urge Queenslanders to find out about the jobs available in the resources boomand to plug into the training needed to get them.Specifically targeted at the unemployed or low skilled workers looking for a career change, the initiative promotesshort and long term job opportunities and increases awareness of the benefits of the mining boom for Queensland. The ads direct people to the government’s www.opportunities.qld.gov.au website where they can:

Register for the new 'Resources 101' course to get ready to apply for jobs onsiteGet information on upcoming Work for Queensland jobs exposSearch specifically tailored jobs websites for resource sector jobsFind out about other opportunities the Queensland Government is funding

Queensland’s economy is on the verge of the next big leap forward and our resources are more sought after thanever before. As many as 38,000 construction and operation jobs will be created in the resource industry between now and 2015and I want locals to have the chance to gain from this boom.We estimate there are up to 3,500 vacancies right now in the resource industry and we intend to make sure that asmany people as possible can take them up.I hope to get along to the 'Work for Queensland Mining and Gas Jobs Expo' being held on Wednesday 2 November,10 am – 4 pm at the Cairns Convention Centre, Sheridan Street. This boom will give us more skills, better jobs and more opportunities. Queensland has a bright future and everyone

has a right to be part of it. Let's make sure Far North Queenslanders get our fair share.

CAIRNS REGIONAL COUNCIL

COUNCILLOR PAUL GREGORY

Mob: 0427 755 141

Hi from CRC.The Entertainment Precinct project has been a contentious issue over the past month. Council hascommitted $57.3 million to progress with the facility, pending the matching State Government funding anda positive response from the Queensland Treasury Corporation with regard to the financial sustainability ofCouncil. I believe the latter is only a formality, with Council being in a relatively strong financial position, with low debt per capita ratio. I was one of the councillors who voted against proceeding at this time withthe EP because I believe that the loss of flexibility for future budgets will be a burden on Councils to come.We are also waiting for the complete Business Case to be presented back to Council, which should occurlater this month. Council is now committed to borrowing for the EP if the other conditions above are met; Icannot criticise the decision, but I can state my reservations about the impact on our future financials.Council is working on getting our drainage infrastructure ready for the impending wet season. If you areaware of any lingering problems that could be helped with a little maintenance, please contact me or thestaff at the Babinda depot. I know that Brad and John and the staff are pretty much aware of the problemspots, but any local knowledge would come in handy now if it has the potential to head off a bad situationwhen the rains come.I have just returned from my last Local Government Association of Queensland annual conference, and asalways, I've come away with some more knowledge and understanding of the problems encountered byCouncils across the State. Public opinion of governments at all levels are at an all time low, and theelectorate appears angry and ready to punish governments at the polls come the next elections. This isnot just in Queensland, as the trend is showing up across the world; it is interesting to see the "popularity"of Councils exactly tracking the "popularity" of the US president, Barrack Obama. The approval/disapproval graphs of both are identical; governments of all ilk are "on the nose" at present. It is difficult toidentify why, but to me it seems like representatives seem to be losing touch with the community. It hasalways been difficult to connect with the community, but it is made easier where a distinct community ex-ists, well represented by community organisations. Such is the case in your town; I find it easy to find thecorrect person to talk to on most issues.Enough for now, and until next time, cheers Paul

Info Centre IlluminationsIsn’t it great to have had such wonderful weather for the school holidays? We have noticed an increase in thenumbers of children accompanying their parents visiting the centre. The Rotary Park camping ground is proving tobe a real hit, with such a perfect swimming hole at their doorstep. Of course, the Boulders are always popular, and Iimagine that our locals are enjoying them just as much as our visitors are.

Our hard working managers, Patsy and Lorraine, need to be congratulated! After lots of time and effort, they havemanaged to secure a grant of $8000 from the Queensland Government, under the banner of “Building RuralCommunities”. The money will be used to employ consultant to help conserve and display Babinda Millmemorabilia. We have obtained many interesting pieces from the new owners of the mill, and are desperatelyseeking a secure storage area. (Can you help?) Once again, if anybody has photos or stories that may be of interest, please contact us at the Information Centre. You may think that what you have is too old, too shabby or too boring. Please let our expert decide. What you have had in the back of your cupboard could be an absolute treasure! Talk toyour neighbours. What have they got secreted away? Please bear in mind that we are a very ordinary group ofvolunteers who have recognized the need to preserve records of our heritage. We need all the help we can get!!

I have noticed “ cassowary sighting “ signs on the highway north of Babinda. It’s heartening to know that our localsare taking the time to report sightings, and perhaps save the life of one of these fabulous creatures. Not so fabulousare the March flies that are annoying us all at the moment. Aah well, we do live in the tropics, and need to expect alittle discomfort in return for all of the benefits of “living in paradise”.

Just keep swatting those pesky flies!

Just Joking...

The kids were lined up in the Cafeteria of a Catholic School for lunch. At the head of the tablewas a large pile of apples. A Nun had made a note and pasted it on the apple tray. “Take onlyone. God is watching.”

At the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip biscuits. One of the kids hadwritten a note, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”

Back into it for the last term of the year. All the kidswill be on their best behaviour this term knowing thatthey’re in the lead up to Christmas with Santa taking akeen interest in how good their listening skills havecome along (when they’re at home too). If the kids arereally good they may even get a visit from Santa atkindy before the end of term. Parents are asked to letMiss Janelle know if their child is Clause-trophobic.(that’s gold!)

The end of last term was topped off with a visit fromPirate Pete. The big prep’s from St.Rita’s came overfor the show. The children had a fantastic time andlaughed almost nonstop for the whole 40 minutes.Since the show the kids have enjoyed making theirown pirate swords and mini treasure boxes. The kidshave also found some fun pirate apps on the AppleiPatch.

This month we would like to share with you some student writing about events we have been involved in.

Yr 2/3/4 Tjapukai Excursion: The ride took us 1 hour & 20 minutes. We walked through the awesome displayroom and across the bridge. The Corroboree (a special type of dance) began. The men were painted in red, yellowand white ochre. The designs were exceptional. After the Corroboree we walked to the hut where a man told usabout the spears and Boomerangs. His knowledge was impressive. By Kane Yr 4

Yr 5/6/7 Mungalli ExcursionHolstein—Friesian Farm: We went to Mr Daley’s Dairy farm He showed us how they milk cows and his milkingsystem is fully computerised. Only 200 cows get milked twice each day. After milking the cows, he sprays iodineon the cows’ udders to stop infection. By Jenna and DemiMungalli Dairy: Our class went to Mungalli Creek farm and listened to a talk about dairy products. The cows pro-duce up to 600 litres of milk a day. Their farm does not keep bulls but sells them or gives them away. There is onlyone computerised machine in Mungalli. The milk is pasteurised for 15 seconds at 27C. The Mungalli Creek farmhas been organic for 24 years. By Claire and Sage

OPTI-MINDSWell done to our Opti-Minds Team who competed at JCU. Our team received Honours—a fantastic effort for theirfirst ever attempt. Highlights: ‘Being praised by the judges for how good our skit was as we had never done thisbefore. I learnt that when working as a team, the ideas flow more and they get better”. (Acacia) “When I got startedin our play, after about two minutes we all started to warm up and it all came together smoothly. Working as a teamhas great benefits”. (Sophie) “Feeling proud after doing the play because I didn’t freeze, talked loud and looked atthe judges. I learnt to work as a team and it’s not too scary to talk in front of people.” (Crystal)

The last month has once again seen many diverse learning opportunities for the students at St. Rita’s, and has high-lighted the enormous fun that we can have through learning!!

A major focus of Term 3 was ‘Jump Rope for Heart’. The children had a ball learning different skipping skills andputting together a performance to music. They learnt many physical, social and emotional lessons throughout theprocess including persistence, resilience and confidence. All of their hard work culminated in ‘Jump Off Day’during which they performed their new skills to parents and grandparents. The children raised an AMAZING $1,030which goes to the Heart Foundation to assist with research.

The first day back this term I was greeted with the smiling faces of kids who were genuinely excited to be back andschool and could clearly express what it was that they were looking forward to learning this term. And what a termit’s going to be! We have so many wonderful learning experiences organised this term including;

SwimmingRugbyAdopt- a- copYear 7 GraduationChristmas CelebrationsSubject specific learning such as Dinosaurs, Space/Planets/Solar system and Ancient Greece.

Our doors are always open to parents who may wish to find out more about the school and the great educationalprograms we have to offer in a supportive Christian environment. NEWS FROM BABINDA S E S from Don Lawie

We’ve had official confirmation that Babinda SES will be allotted a brand new flood boat next February. As part of therefurbishment of SES State wide, the new boat has a value of $88,000. At 5.95 metres in length it is significantly bigger than theold boat which has served our group well for many years – longer then the eleven years I have been a member.

A feature of the new boat will be a front-opening ramp, similar to a landing barge, which can be utilised for loadingfreight, passengers, stretcher cases and even – if we ever obtain one – a four-wheeler bike. Such a vehicle would make searches -along beaches for example – quick and easy. I remember trudging along Russell Heads North Shore for hours a while back and afour wheeler would make it a breeze.

Our member Jason Nielsen has recently completed the gruelling course of instruction and is now a qualified Flood boatShipmaster, bringing the number of operators in Babinda SES to four. The course used to run on the Russell-Mulgrave Riversbut increasing numbers of crocodiles has caused the venue to be changed to the safer waters of Lake Tinaroo.

We’ll be doing shakedown trips along the rivers when the new boat arrives if you see us on the water – give us a waveand a Hullo.

WOMEN OF BABINDA

JANICE LAURIDSEN

Two words to describe this Babinda woman “BUSY LADY.”

Janice as a youngster lived in Cairns and attended ParramattaState School and Cairns State High then worked in the Bank ofWales.

Janice met her future husband Carl (Curly) Lauridsen at YouthGroup activities in Cairns and married in 1964. They joined hersister Pam and Curly’s brother Paul at Cod Fish Creek andbegan to establish a cane farm.

They cleared land and Janice and Pam helped plant cane (nomachinery). Females were very tough and versatile in thosedays!

The Lauridsens began a Fertilizer spreading business in theBabinda area in 1968 and Janice ran the office part for 30 years.

Janice and Curly had all their life been involved with Babinda’sonly Kids Sunday School and later Kids Club. Their support ofBabinda kids was nothing short of greatness and they willalways be remembered by many kids with great fondness.

With every great woman there is a wonderful man and it is fortheir contribution to our youth- Janice and Curly and “Curly’sCamp” at Tinaroo that they will be loved and remembered.Janice was camp cook and general treasurer for many years.

Janice along with other keen Babinda residents worked hard toestablish our valuable Abbeyfield House and has been itsTreasurer for the last 10 years.

Outside her Babinda existence, Janice for 9 years has beenTreasurer and Financial Advisor of Christian WomenCommunication International and continues as a member of theTropical Regional Board.

Hey, Janice Lauridsen it is your contribution as a woman ofBabinda that makes this small town so strong and durable andwe extend our best wishes and Thanks for your wonderful ef-fort.

Your family appreciates and loves you more because yousomehow manage to also fit in “The Grandma Thing” ofbabysitting, running grandkids all over the place and supportingfamily!

ANYWAY…

People are unreasonable, illogical and self centred.

Love them anyway!

Response to last month’s article ‘Farming for the Future’ by Les NielsonIf our cane growers cannot now see the folly in concentrating their efforts on the production of crystalsugar alone, I am forced to conclude that they live on a different planet. The lead given by Les Nielson,Robert Muzic, Lance Rodman and Steve Destro (principally) over the past several years with little industrysupport, has shown and opened the door to a truly rejuvenated industry .I look at the age of our continuinggrowers and ask “Where are the young, the inheritors of a once prosperous industry?” In effect, the youngare saying “Don’t be silly. Who wants to grow cane?” Who indeed, with the weather risks and the mercy ofworld markets to deal with.

The time has come for all thinking growers to get solidly behind FFF and help to create a real future for thewhole sugar cane plant. Millers of course, are uninterested in anything except crystal sugar because that hasbeen the source of their wealth.

This tree grower is sickened by the thought of burning $1000/tonne bagasse just to fire a boiler whenQuilton can use it profitably (unless they are mad) to make hygiene products. We are stupid!

I congratulate Les and his companions on their achievements and urge 100% Babinda industry support.

MULGRAVE SETTLERS’ MUSEUM ITEM OF THEMONTH from Don Lawie

Our occasional display has been changed to focus on children’stoys, with prominence given to homemade items that gave youngpeople pleasure in times gone by. Many toys imparted motor skillsin their use, or emphasised the value of family life in times thatwere not always easy.

A feature of the display is a number of wooden toys – not reallyold, but old enough! Gordonvale Rural School in 1946 had wood-work classes and the students were tasked with crafting wooden“action” toys to be sold at the annual school fete. Commercial toyswere in short supply just after World War Two and many thingshad to be hand made. Long-term president of the Mulgrave ShireHistorical Society Jim Hill was a member of that class and he hasloaned us a fascinating series of toys about which we can remi-nisce. The horse and rider are geared so that the rider actuallymoves in a realistic motion and the undisclosed animal winds up awinch as he moves along. Fascinating stuff, and a source of endlessentertainment for boys and girls of any age.

Also included in the picture is a little pull-along duckie, one of apair that I made for my two little daughters in the 1970’s. One has abroken bill – mended at the time with a Band-aid, and they are stillused by the girls’ children when they come to visit.

Museum visitors are encouraged to tell us of the homemade toysthey had when they were younger...

Recently we were lucky enough to meet somewonderful locals at Babinda and were even able topurchase a contemporary Ecclesiastical paintingby Gordonton Artist June Lancaster. Thank yougood people of Babinda, and especially thank youMike Adams. From Phillipa Nichol—Tourist

BABINDA TOWNA SONG TO SING ABOUT by Judi Van Dycke

Since joining a wonderful progressive singing group in Cairns 6 months ago called Soulsong, the 'songbird' in me hasblossomed and I have now written 2 songs - 'Skybird' and just completed is The Babinda Town Song.

I headed up north 23 years ago from Adelaide and Babinda has been my main home base over that time. It has always calledme back on my many ventures. 6 months ago I realised that with all Babinda's character and beauty, we don't have a song tosing.

It has taken 4 months or so to capture the essence of Babinda and the region and I've introduced the song to you in thisarticle.

I hope to record The Babinda Town Song in November at Pegasus Recording Studios, Cairns. I then want to present thesong on ABC radio and 4KZ and ask for Sponsorship funding to commence The Babinda Town movie clip which will beproduced by local film and photography professional, Glen O'Malley with the song running throughout the duration of the clip. Iam hoping then that this quirky catchy song and movie clip attracts a renewed appreciation of the town and region and a positivenew energy of tourism to North Queensland.

A simple song can inject greater pride and unity within a community and give our school choir a great song to sing at ouryearly Harvest Festival. I am hoping that with North Queensland support The Babinda Town movie clip helps Babinda 'shineout' to Australia and the world, encouraging an exciting and prosperous future for this beautiful region of North Queensland. I'mhoping the song of Babinda Town CD will be available before Christmas. If you or your organisation or company are able tosupport the making of the Babinda Town movie clip, please phone Judi Van Dycke on 40672 604 or 0400 726 245.

Your sponsorship funding will be greatly appreciated to help get the movie clip up and running to help promote BabindaTown.

Copies of the lyrics are available at the Taskforce Office
